Welcome to BajaMar (A Belize Tourism Board Gold Standard accredited property) . Located in desirable Mata Grande/Mata Chica neighborhood, this house was completed in 2010 and boasts pristine white sand beach, private infinity fresh water pool which overlooks to barrier reef, 3rd story viewing deck, palapa with bar, with beverage cooler & grill, 4 kayaks for guests to enjoy, and a further outdoor kitchen with gas grill, wine fridge and seating for 10 or more.

House is ideal for any reunion, small wedding or family & friends get together. House consists of 5 bedrooms, 5 baths and 4,500+ sq ft of living space. 3 of the 5 bedrooms have private kitchenettes, bathrooms, personal safes, and plasma TV's which all have private entrances.

The neighborhood offers services such as grocery store, golf cart rentals, bike rentals as well as some of the best restaurants on the island. If you are looking to get away and enjoy peace and quiet but still want to have access to services-this is the ideal location and house for you!

Our group of friends and family stayed at BajaMar for a week. It was a great location with local dock pick up for excursions. Golf cart rides to San Pedro and Secret Beach was fun and exciting. Alfred is the best and can help you with anything you want to experience on the island, Diane's cooking was great and a must do. Several restaurants were a quick walk on the beach and wish we had tried them earlier in the trip. Overall a great experience and look forward to going back in the future and will certainly stay at BajaMar again!!

Wonderful vacation

Alfred was fabulous and booked several tours and was just a wonderful . Diane’s meals are a MUST. Just a lovely experience. The snorkeling was great and everyone is super friendly!

Best house in Ambergris Caye

Before we even arrived we felt cared for. The owner Tony provided incredible details about the many ways to travel to their home, what to do when you are there. Alfred the caretaker and host of the property was amazing and made our stay so special. His wife Dianie made fabulous meals for us which we highly recommend! The home and whole property were absolutely perfect for us! I couldn’t think of one thing I wish was different. The beds are comfortable, the kitchen had everything we needed, and Alfred went grocery shopping for us so when we arrived we were all set! We used the kayaks and snorkel gear daily which was so great to have right there. The pool is wonderful and we were in it all day and into the night. Alfred connected us with Captain Darwin to do snorkeling excursions which we loved and enjoyed being on a private charter. They catered it to what we wanted to do and see! We would definitely stay here again!

A Great Family Experience!

As with a the other reviews for Baja Mar, this is a truly unique and wonderful place. The house is perfect for multiple families (we had 4), the food was AMAZING, and Alfred and Dianie make this an exceptional experience! Alfred was also very helpful with getting all the groceries we needed for the kids and parents, as well as arranging a surprise party with a local band (amazing!) for a 50th birthday party celebration. The house is spotless, the yard and beach are safe and comfortable and everything we needed was quickly delivered. The kids, parents and grandparents all loved the pool, as well as the snorkeling, and trying to open coconuts! Thank you for making our trip so special!

Needs an update

The property is currently for sale by the owner and many things need to be updated. We did not have hot water in our bathroom/shower for the entire week despite multiple attempts at fixing it. Just about everything needs a refresh. The property managers (Alfred and Diane) are delightful as were the meals prepared by them.

Hidden Gem

What a wonderful VRBO property! We booked our family of 4 with our friends, who are a family of 5. We all fit very comfortably, with room to spare. There was excellent communication prior to arrival. Alfred and his wife are wonderful to welcome our group, offer grocery and dinner options, help arrange excursions, you name it! Tony is a wonderful host and keeps up with details. There was no "welcome book" like most properties have, but you don't need one! Alfred is full of helpful suggestions and knowledge and there is little to be done upon leaving. We enjoyed the beach front (some seaweed doesn't stop us), dock, kayaks, pool, and outdoor eating areas. The mosquitos are insane, so bring your repellant, but they stay away most of the day. We rented a golf cart for the duration of our stay, which is a necessity if you plan to leave the property. An easy 15-20 minute drive gets you into San Pedro. Secret Beach is closer. Plenty of dive sites are north of town, so not everything took us into town. We were picked up at the dock for several excursions we did, including SCUBA diving, Shark Ray Alley, Hol Chan, snorkeling with sharks, and a day trip to Caye Caulker. This is a great property for friends and families if you like adventure and really experiencing the area.

Fantastic Family Getaway

From the location of this home to it’s layout & hospitality you can’t go wrong with this choice for a vacation. What an amazing place to stay & experience an Island life style. We had a group of 8, all family. With the layout of this home no one was in each others way or intruding in anyones wish for a quiet place. We all had a wonderful time playing, laughing & adventures. We all had our own spaces inside this well layed out home. The pool was clean, cool & clear, perfect to slip into to wash away the salty ocean air. Near the pool you also have the cabana shade area, one of our many favorite hangout spots. The top level had 2 rooms with the main kitchen, living room & two landings to dine out. 3 full suites below. The view on the landing facing the reef was breath taking. The owner truly encompassed the vision of the the ocean and all the various colors and the wild life that swims or flies by. All our needs were met with this home. Each room had it’s own AC to make the nights comfortable. The BBQ landing made it easy to cook and prepare meals, it was well equipped. All the doors had amazing wood shutters to leave open to let in the daily ocean breeze. The beds, even the twins, were so comfortable. How do you encompass hospitality into a few words.. well, when it comes to Alfredo and family you simply can’t accomplish this task in a few words. From the time of our greeting to our unwilling departure, Alfredo, Dianie, John, Chris and Yomara graced us with their hospitality. It was more than going through the motion of the “meet and greet’ and the stating of whats expected. He welcomed us to the rhythm of the island ways, the culture and also the understanding of our needs to making this stay memorable as well as comfortable. From Alfredo showing us the relaxed style of adventure, the amazing flavor of the local foods, and keeping us mindful of safety for our stay. Alfredo would weave in and out of our stay to see to our needs, he had the ability to show up just when you need his advise or help. As two of our family members are VRBO owner and hosts also, they walked away with inspiration and new things to add to their hosting. Your stay at Baja Mar will be amazing with Alfredo’s family assistance, cooking, keeping the place perfect for any needs. The Menu Dianie will prepare is worth every morsel. Amazing food don’t pass up the opportunity of having this wonderful lady serve up her specialties. Alfredo's hosting made this trip for all of us,

What a spectacular place, a little bit out of town, but that’s what we like

His property is a little bit out of town and be very happy with that. One of our favorite parts of the place was its proximity to secret beach, which was a favorite by all partiesThe property itself was spectacular with great views offering beautiful sunrises and spectacular sunsetIt was appointed very well with everything we needed. He is important to note that there is two bedrooms upstairs in the main room three bedrooms downstairs that all have connecting doors great for families, but they did lock if you wanted them tooAnother highlight where the caretakers they were attentive, responsive, cooked us numerous meals, and those meals might’ve been the best. We ate the whole trip.They helped us with anything we needed, and we can’t say enough about how much we appreciated them and their kind spirit and helpful attitudeThe pool is wonderful, and our kids exhausted themselves in it every single dayHaving the dock right there was super convenient. We had some sort of boat activity set up every single day and it picked us up right there on the dock and returned us there as wellWe had a great time and look forward to returning!

Just what we were looking for

Our group of eight enjoyed our stay at Baja Mar very much. The property was just what we wanted - nice pool, quiet area, and plenty of space to hang out and relax.There are 5 bedrooms on the property. Two upstairs, and three suites on the bottom floor. The upstairs deck was where we spent most of our time. It was perfect for quiet mornings drinking coffee and watching the sunrise, or evenings spent visiting and rehashing our adventures of the day. The house shows some signs of wear and tear, but it was clean and comfortable. It's also a little far from town via golf cart. We didn't mind that though as we were able to be picked up right at the dock for our tours, so didn't really need to go into town for anything unless we wanted to.Alfred provided top notch service during our stay, and helped arrange several fantastic tours for us. We arranged a welcome meal with Dianie and highly recommend it. It was delicious, and it was nice to be able to relax when we arrived and not have to worry about cooking or finding a nearby restaurant. I would not hesitate to stay at Baja Mar again.

Group Vacation

We had all the room that we needed. Alfred took care of everything we needed and was a valuable source for giving us info that we needed. Our welcome meal was great I only wish the group had wanted a second meal cooked for us. Lots of seaweed so we couldn't go into the ocean but Alfred explained thats what happens when the wind was coming from the direction it was the whole time we were there so obviously mother nature to blame

My wife and I and 3 other couples spent a week at Baja Mar. What a dream! The house was more than enough for all of us, although we spent very little time inside. The palapa provided comfort from the hot sun and a great space to enjoy the ocean views and breezes. We dined outside utilizing all terraces/balconies. The location puts guests in close proximity to guided excursions for snorkeling, which made it easy to take the kayaks out and join a few snorkelers in viewing rays and sharks, awesome! The property overall has a lot more trees than we imagined and we felt immersed in nature seeing plenty of birds and lizards. Alfred and Dianie made our trip seamless, setting up excursions, getting us groceries, and even setting up a Dr. visit for our 2 of our sick travelers. Dianie cooked us some of our most amazing meals! Overall experience was 5/5 stars and beat out several other stays we've had in the Carribean and C.A. (Costa Rica, Jamaica, St. Thomas/St. John). Suggestions for improvement. Sharpen or upgrade your non-serrated knifes, very dull. Only 3 kayaks, need a 4th. More plastic ice trays.

Nice stay in San Pedro

Had limited communication with the host, but the host referred us to the local property manager to text with. We had the option to have the property manager provide dinner for us (charge for cooking as well as separate charge for groceries), and the food was very good. Property manager was able to coordinate everything we needed and all local logistics.The property itself is nice and has a well equipped kitchen and lots of seating areas. Some of the outdoor spaces were slightly run down due to salt exposure, but not really an issue. The property is a bit far from the city (20 min drive via golf cart), but felt homely. There are some hotel restaurants and other restaurants nearby if needed.Everything was great and would certainly consider staying here again.

Family Vacay

Alfred and Dianie were amazing to work with. They were very responsive and extremely helpful with organizing a snorkel tour that picked us up right at the dock. The property is big and spacious, multiple outdoor seating and eating areas. Dianie made 4 meals for us each one was delicious….it was almost unanimous that the fish bbq was the fave even with the kids. The pool was warm and clean. Not many spices in the kitchen but lots of pots and pans. The AC was lovely for sleeping but then we could open the doors during the day. There’s kayaks and some snorkel gear to use and you can get to the reef for great snorkeling with sharks and rays from the dock. Highly recommend this property for families or groups of people.

Great vacation

BajaMar is a great house in a beautiful location. We stayed with our adult children and friends. Plenty of space for everyone and comfortable rooms.Alfred and Dianie were wonderful and attentive and helped with any arrangements or questions we had. Alfred had our golf carts waiting for us when we arrived, connected us with a dive shop, and gave us lots of guidance on local things to do. Dianie cooked us 3 amazing meals. We will definitely go back!

Spacious isolated home

The location is quiet, but plan to be flexible while figuring out what to do based on weather changes and time to travel. Most if our activities left straight from the dock which is very convenient. The golf cart roads everywhere are pretty rough and messy so leave your finery at home. The island is dirty and trashy, including the property itself, although the house is certainly nice and clean inside.

Family and friends getaway

Baja mar is a beautiful property located about 40 minutes (by golf cart) north of San Pedro. It was a perfect destination for a friends/family getaway. Private, on the beach, with a spacious pool, and dock access. Alfred took great care of us and Dianie cooked some amazing dinners. We can’t wait to go back.

Some things great, some things not so great

The house managers, Alfred and Dianie could not be more helpful. They are friendly, always there to answer questions and provide useful information. Dianie is also a great cook and her evening meals are very fulfilling and there are always leftovers. Recommend the pineapple chicken and raisins and the fried chicken entrees. Dianie is also a marvelous baker and if celebrating a special occasion, check with her about a cake. Owners are lucky to have these two on the premises. Unfortunately, the house is falling into disrepair. Perhaps because it is for sale and owner does not want to invest in upkeep. Never the less, the grill does not work, the dishwasher needs replacement, the stove needs replacement, and in general the house needs a very thorough cleaning, pool needs serious attention and the yard needs cleaning and replacement of dead shrubs and plants. The photos are of what BajaMar once was.

Beautiful location with helpful house managers

Our group of 8 loved our stay. Alfred arranged everything we could need - provisions, golf carts, boat trip, etc. The golf carts we rented were waiting at the airport with someone to guide us and transport our luggage. Everything was easy and beautiful. Highly recommend!

Beautiful location and spacious but dated home

We spent 2 weeks at Bajamar, with 6 adults and 4 very small kids the first week, and 5 adults with 2 kids the second. The great: Great amount of space for multiple families, and the outdoor areas were amazing. The kids lived in the wonderful pool! The view is beyond photos, with a rare sandy beach for Ambergris. Brand new flat top grill! Diane made us 10 meals and each of them was wonderful. Alfred and Diane needed to be away unexpectedly for a few days and kindly ordered a cake from a local bakery for my daughter's birthday. Getting picked up at the dock in front of the house for excursions was great. The fine: We needed help basically every other day - with the large sliding doors, oven, an air conditioner, butane, the internet, etc. Alfred was quick to work to fix things if he could, but couldn't always. The bad: We had several power outages while there. The vast majority were island wide, so not under the control of the house. However, Alfred was working to install a generator and turned off power for 2 hours our last evening at the house. He'd warned me there would be an outage before it went out but I assumed it would brief. It interrupted packing, and more importantly bedtime with two little kids, which without air conditioning or lights (again) was extremely frustrating when we were leaving 12 hours later. The house is showing age in the sea air and could use a really deep clean/replacement of rusting fixtures. Interior areas are definitely showing heavy wear.

Why they chose this property

While all beautiful places have their individual charms, nowhere on earth has given me the same sense of a yearning to return than here at BajaMar on Ambergris, the “Isla Bonita”.
As a brief background to the house, at the end of 2007 I bought the land, five miles north of San Pedro Town, to build BajaMar as a tropical home. The intention was to enable my wife and I to escape the cold winters of Europe; that I might fly-fish the surrounding salt water flats during my retirement and the decision was made with some vague and eccentric middle aged whim of investment. While the conceptual layout of the house was mine, the fine architectural design is entirely to the credit of local architect, Sue Courtenay. The house was completed in 2010 after a prolonged and challenging construction period of some two and a half years. Every single material for the construction was brought to the site by barge.
