Great location. Right on the ocean with easy access to anything you want to do. No central air, but the constant breeze means that's not a problem. I'd stay here again in a second.

Wonderful stay and amazing view

We loved our stay! the view from the porch is amazing and we enjoyed spending most of our time at the house on the porch and the waterfront. Being right on the water was so peaceful and we loved the sunsets every night. The property manager was lovely and she called us before our trip to make sure we had all of the information we needed to find the house and get in, which was great because we actually hadn't received the automatic email. The house had everything we needed including beach chairs, umbrella etc. If we ever go back to Kona we will stay there again - recommend it completely!

Blue Makai

This is a classic Hawaii oceanfront home. If you're looking for modern, then this isn't for you. Reminds me of how the Big Island was when I was a child.... which is exactly what we were looking for. Was everything the listing shows it to be. Peaceful location. We would come back to this home again.

Reviewer Comments: I think it was our fourth time in this lovely home and it was just as great as it has been in the past. Great whale watching. The only thing that was hard to adjust to was no cable connection and we could not even get decent news or sports on the television. The property managers are terrific.

Slice of heaven from the first day to the last

We stayed over Christmas break 2024. We arrived and immediately checked out the beach. Saw the tide pools and turtles right away. We were sold. The water was not too rough because of the coral reef break. We usually stay on North shore of Oahu and water is not conducive to all ages and skill levels. This beach accommodated our youngest (9 yr old) to our oldest (70 yr old) and us in between, too!Turtles everyday, fish everyday, an eel on occasion… and whales almost everyday. The beds were comfortable, the bathrooms functional. Plenty of towels and linens and toiletries. Fully stocked kitchen. We cooked our Christmas dinner after grocery shopping and didn’t ‘need’ anything that wasn’t there. Large washer and dryer, so next time, we won’t overpack! ;-)Saw the lava spewing from the active volcano, had malasadas from the truck up the road, ‘adopted’ a dog for the day from the humane society near Hilo, shopped farmers markets and resorts- did almost all we wanted to do… but anytime away from the house was time away from ‘our’ beach… and we loved the beach!!!We even went to the goodwill and lucked out and found a Christmas tree!!! A palm tree Christmas tree!!! And a wreath and some stockings! It was as close to a Christmas at home as we could make it! All for about 50 dollars! We dropped off our purchases back at the goodwill before heading home!We’re already trying to plan our next trip back, but the booking calendar is jam packed!We recommend this home 100%

It looks a little over used in that paint needs touch up, air conditioners could be updated, but basically it feels like a family home that can welcome children. You can’t beat the lanai and outdoor shower. Sadly, the empty lot next door now has a big boat and storage containers along with some activity with machinery.

(if you are looking for bright lights, bustling crowds, new/shiny rooms/fixtures, or the 'feel' of a resort, look elsewhere).Quiet dead-end street (Puako Beach rd), neighborly feel, Puako General Store 1/2 mile away, nice walks on street, along beach to S to Mauni Lani, near Hapuna and 69 beaches, 15 minute drive to Waikola village grocery, fantastic outdoor shower!, deck/lanai - amazing, what else can be said, we spent as much time on lanai as possible, good snorkeling spot near end of road. Hawaiian Villa rental staff was quite friendly and helpful. We'd love to come back!

It was ready for enjoyment from the moment we entered, with welcoming lights lit, a basket of treats on the counter and cooling fans spinning in each room. The VIEW is unsurpassed...sunrises or sunsets, equally stunning. Quiet, private, comfortable and attractive. We loved the porch, the tide pools, turtles, breezes, location, ahhhh! The house is fully stocked, kitchen and baths have all the amenities needed. We found ourselves lost in the laidback Hawaiian lifestyle while taking in God's creation. This is an island retreat that we would like to visit again.All descriptions are accurate,shopping is convenient,and the customer service from Trinity Properties was above and beyond our expectations.

SO RELAXING!

Usually, we stay at one of the houses right on Beach 69 (Wailea Bay), but none were available for our timeframe. We rented Blue Makai maybe feeling a little disappointed about not being at the beach. Once we got to Blue Makai we were so NOT disappointed! The oceanfront location and the tranquil lanai made up for being able to walk to the beach. The lanai has a beautiful antique teak daybed wonderful for just lounging and watching the waves. (Or napping!) We saw turtles and dolphins swimming in front of the house. Unlike the beach, it was very quiet and private. The trade winds and the lanai fans kept the mosquitos to a minimum. The house is old, charming, and well decorated. The kitchenware was super well stocked. All the pots/pans were stainless steel and there was a large cast iron enamel dutch oven (Costco's version of Le Cruset). I like a very firm mattress and my daughter likes a squishy mattress. Somehow the mattresses were comfortable for both of us. Some members of our family are severely intolerant of synthetic fragrances. Mary uses unscented laundry detergent in all her properties and low/no scent on all other cleaning products. The mattresses and washer/dryer don't reek of fragrance like most places. We usually struggle with fake scents when traveling but never at 2Papayas properties. Mary and team are always responsive to any issues.

Our favorite was the private expansive ocean views of every hue of blue imaginable! We never went out to eat or really to do anything but snorkeling twice a day right in front of the house! So peaceful, so magical...we will definitely be back! The outdoor shower is a huge bonus for avid snorkelers like us! A Blue Makai vacation is pure bliss! 🐬🐙🐠

Restorative retreat

Blue Makai was everything we were looking for -- private, beautiful, low key residential street. If you want to be near night life, music, or able to easily walk to dinner or shop at unique local businesses, etc, this is NOT the place for you. The closest places to really purchase food (the General Store is very bare bones) are malls with chain stores in big resorts that are almost 10 minute drive at minimum. That said, its isolation was part of what made it heaven for us. We loaded up on groceries and cooked IN every night, watching the sunset over the gorgeous ocean and lava rock. Terrific host, helpful check in, every desired amenity and incredible location on the water with tide pools, snorkeling and turtles right out the back door!

The best home!

I almost hate to leave this review, since I want to return again and again and don't want other people to book it up before me! This is the house I have been looking for in Hawaii. On the water, quiet, a real home. The kids played in the tide pools all day long, we ate every meal outside on the porch, and the management company was easy to work with and responsive. We have stayed in a lot of places in Hawaii (condos, homes, resorts) and this is by far my favorite. Hoping to return next year

We love the Puako area and were so lucky to stay oceanside to watch the whales swim by the front of the property and look out at Maui in the distance. You can easily driver to many resort beaches or walk to 2 in the Puako area.The location is really nice for easily driving to resort beaches in the area and well as walking to 2 local beaches. And driving uphill a little for a fun farmer's market.The property management is first rate.We can't wait to return!

Absolute Perfection

Location is perfect for exploring the west side of the island. Snorkeling and diving right off the back of the house. Back Lanai is full of comfortable furniture - outdoor couch, 4 comfortable chairs, table for 6. All kinds of kitchen equipment and enough dishes and cutlery tor a family of 4. Friendly neighbors, safe, shaded street to walk and bike on. Plenty of fluffy beach towels. And even a few house geckos to greet us. Convenient grocery shopping. 2 Papayas provided an excellent guide book with extremely current and helpful tips. We appreciated the filled fruit bowl on arrival!! We rent a lot of houses - this is one of those few rentals that is actually better than the photos. Absolute perfection.
