If you are looking for a beautiful, historic home,a view of creation at its most magical and unspoilt....then, this is the house for you! Exquisite in its decoration: Hawaiian quilts and vases of orchids,Chinese pots and water colors of the ocean. You will be lulled to sleep by the sound of waves. We hope to come back!

Thank you for your nice review. Great to hear you enjoyed and especially appreciate the comment about the orchids, as the owner puts a lot of effort into those!
This vacation home is awesome. It is a historic beach house built in 1929. It is so charming. The view is amazing and the ocean experience is so peaceful. The property management is very attentive. We will definitely be back.

We spent a week here and it had everything we needed. Plenty of space so we weren't feeling on top of each other, tons of towels so I wasn't doing laundry every day, and the kitchen had everything we needed to cook a few meals in. The home is older, but they've done a wonderful job keeping things updated so it doesn't really feel old. The only thing that felt "old" were the windows, but being a historic home I understand why its necessary to keep things as is. When its windy (and its always windy in Waimanalo) the doors/windows can be noisy in certain rooms. My kids wouldn't sleep in a certain bedroom due to the windy noises. The property management was fantastic, and they even sent me back my jacket that I left on accident after scrambling to catch out flight home! We would 1000% stay here again!
Jennifer D.
Response from VrboOwner on 3 Apr, 2026
Thank you for the review and the feedback on the windows. We will take care of the noise immediately by replacing weather stripping but in the long run, the owner may consider changing out windows as well. They do put a lot of effort into updating the home - roof, electrical, kitchen counters, appliances, flooring, etc., all done in the last few years. And they will continue to modernize without losing that 'historic' look and feel -its a tricky balance, but we do appreciate the point. Look forward to having you back.

I stayed 10 nights in Hale Pohaku with family for an early Christmas. The best feature of this house is the view and super easy beach access! We enjoyed staying on the quiet side of the island and enjoyed all the charm of Kailua for a very relaxing time. This historic home has lots of character and I think is an exception value. It does have some quirks and if you are looking for pristine and new it may not be for you. Personally, I can't wait to go back and would re-book without hesitation.

Thank you for your review and glad you enjoyed the 'country', which Waimanalo used to affectionately be called. This home was originally called "The First Lady of Waimanalo" as it was the first home in this area dating back to 1928! It is on the historic register and you are right in your assessment - despite all the renovations, it is not a new, contemporary home. Glad you appreciated and called that out for others to read about. Let us know if we can assist you again soon; would love to have you back.
This house is amazing and so close to the beach. I will certainly come again and rent this property in the future.

We've stayed here twice. We love the location and the beach access.
Great place, old historic home! The pictures do not show the age so if you are looking for ‘new’ you may be dissatisfied. Awesome location on the beach!!
We loved the house and location. The house was spotless and had everything we needed and more. I love that the house came with extras like boogie boards, coolers, and beach chairs. They all came in very handy at the amazing beach just steps away from the back door. The beach was never crowded and we loved hearing the waves at night. We loved the location and ate at Ono's and Kalapawai Cafe multiple times. Both were only a block away. Communication with the manager was easy and I'm not sure what could have made this house any better.
We made the trek to Hawaii from North Carolina and our stay in Waimanalo did not disappoint. The house was incredible, situated on a beautiful private beach just steps from the house. The views from the living room window and then on the beach were stunning. Quite frankly we thought that the pictures shown in the VRBO ad were possibly stock photos, but oh no- they are real. Those views are taken from the house and associated beach! We were a short drive to some amazing hikes (Lighthouse, Diamondhead) and other activities such as snorkeling a Hanauma Bay, watching surfing at the North Shore, Luau at Waimea Valley, etc. The house was stocked with everything we needed, such as beach chairs and toys, and daily necessities like dishwasher and laundry detergent, trash bags, etc. Taken together, we would definitely rent this house again, and miss being in Oahu already!

This was my second stay at Hale Pohaku - I simply love this historic home!! And this was my third rental experience with Private Homes Hawaii - I love working with this agency. They are the best!! Access to the property is seamless. The on site caretakers are friendly and at the same time unintrusive. The beachfront location is perfect without being overcrowded. In fact, at times it feels almost like a private beach. The home is well stocked with essentials and the exit is one of the easiest. I will be back - I hope sooner rather than later. Again, I simply love this home!

We cannot say enough about our stay, we absolutely loved this home, the location and every detail of our trip. This house provided everything we were hoping for on our family vacation. It’s location on the beach is perfect and stunning...literally steps to the sand. Plenty of room for our big family and amenities for our infant and toddler grandchildren. The living room window provides the most magnificent view of the beach, ocean and spectacular sunrise. The owner and property manager was very responsive. We will definitely be back at this home.

My family of 8 (3 generations) really enjoyed our stay in beautiful Hale Pohaku. Beach is wonderful, not crowded and like on the post cards. House was amazing, on the beach, very well equipped with everything you could posssibly need. Jeremy was great, organizing early and easy check in and responding to all our questions immediately. Amazing stay with our family. Only (minor) suggestion would be to get better blinds in master bedroom as the rising sun hits the windows directly at 6am in the morning. Other than that I would recommend this house to everyone and will be back soon.

Historic home with a BEAUTIFUL Beach as part of it's front yard. Large grounds and very private. The home is old,so it took us a bit to get over some cosmetic issues like hairline sink cracks, doors with ocean moisture related issues, some rust etc-BUT after that first impression, the home was like being in a movie set.( Wonderful charm, awesome views and a great sandy beach steps away.) We were ages 2 to 72 and the home was spacious, well equipped for our week stay. This yard and home would be perfect for a wedding.

We stayed in Hale Pohaku for 10 days and had a wonderful experience. The home is almost 100 years old, but meticulously maintained. It was spotless when we arrived and well-stocked with linens, towels, beach chairs/umbrellas, and general household products (tp, paper towels, trash bags, etc). There is a caretaker in a cottage on the property who was welcoming, kind, and very helpful. The view from this house, and the beach just steps from the door, are spectacular. The neighborhood is an easy drive to attractions such as Diamond Head, Pearl Harbor, and Koko Crater Botanical Garden and is close to restaurants and shopping. We didn’t have a single complaint about this property – it was perfect. Highly recommend!

Our family recently stayed at Hale Pohaku and it was a dream vacation! Waimanalo is a very quiet town with white sand beach (No Rocks, No Coral, No Currents, Small Waves, some Jelly Fish) and it was perfect to relax from sunrise to dusk. Hale Pohaku property was just as described, it was very clean and sizeable. The layout was great with spacious living room with big windows, all bedrooms have AC. the bathrooms, kitchen, laundry area were good, and for kids the WiFi worked just fine. The ocean view and having the beach just a few steps away was the highlight of every morning. The Property Manager and staff were very helpful (even brought us delicious bread pudding) and the caretakers that live on property were very nice.

Reviewer Comments:
Two couples spent a week here in late January, and we enjoyed our stay very much. The reason to stay at this house is the amazing beach. We spent hours each day walking and enjoying the beach itself, and inside the house the picture window in the living room kept drawing us back (and together) for the view. The beach was never crowded, even on weekends and sometimes we were the only people out walking. We swam nearly every day, the surf is low and it is easy to get in for swimming. Plenty of beach towels, toys, chairs, etc. provided. The location is actually very convenient--15-30 min from pretty much everywhere we were interested in. The house itself is very old and has not been updated. We loved the layout, with two bedrooms and a bath on one wing completely separate from the master bedroom and bath on the other side. It was perfect for two couples or two families. However, it was a little awkward getting down to the patio or beach as there is no access from the beach side of the house except through the master bedroom. The beds are very comfortable, the linens and towels of high quality, and the kitchen is very well stocked and has relatively new appliances. The house was very clean. It would have been much more pleasant if it were updated, since the furniture is old, the air conditioners in the bedrooms are noisy (although they kept the rooms cool for sleeping), and the curtains in every room let in too much light, but for a week it was fine.

Thank you for your comments. We discussed with the owner and he is actually scheduling a significant renovation/upgrades this summer. That said, it is a Historic home (on the Register) and a casual beach house so it may not be for everyone. Most guest do enjoy the character and as you say the highlight is the location. Anyhow, your points are well taken and appreciated and we thank you for your continued business.

Reviewer Comments:
On our eighth trip to Hawaii, this was our favorite house so far! The home itself is clean and well-appointed, featuring modern amenities but also a nod to its history with pieces of local art throughout. Our party of seven all loved the house, it's location, the terrific beach just steps away, and especially THAT VIEW from the huge living room picture window. Sunrises are amazing and our daily early-morning routine of "watching the ocean wake up" is something we miss already. From the beginning, when Jeremy sent us a pdf of all the details we'd need or want, then met us at the home and showed us around on arrival, we were impressed with the preparation and professionalism of our hosts. Everything was as advertised or better, and our stay, despite three days of overcast, rainy weather, exceeded our expectations. It was so nice just to bask in the quiet of Waimanalo. The nearly-deserted beach, which is the best one we've been to on Oahu, is just beautiful, and the waves are just right for boogie boarding or swimming/playing out past the surfline. We felt safe in the water throughout, although on the windy, rainy days when the surf was higher and pretty rough, we obeyed the posted warnings and stayed out of the water. We loved the location as well. For food, there are two excellent places to eat an easy block walk away. We walked down and got takeout several times during the trip and were seriously spoiled by the fish tacos, garlic shrimp (some of the best we've had on the island), garlic fries, fresh kahlua pig sandwiches, and even shaved ice that was a quick and easy walk away. Also, location-wise, we were 5 minutes from Kaihlua, about 15 minutes from Hunauma Bay and about 20 from Honolulu. One morning we went ziplining at Keanu Farms on the North Shore (highly recommended - the most fun we had on the trip!) - which is about 75 minutes away, so everything's pretty close. All in all, we had a terrific week at Hale Pohaku in Waiman
