Snow plow was pulling out as we pulled up. Perfect timing! The house was warm and welcoming, lots of information, beautiful decorations. Every thing you could need was provided, coffee and creamers, hot chocolate, snacks. All pots, pans, utensils, ski rack, high chair. It was like walking into your favorite aunts house. We all loved it and will be back it is perfectly located to Olympic rink and downtown.

Stayed with a friend to do some cross country skiing and hiking. The home was clean and comfortable. Location was very conveniently located to the town center. The host was extremely accommodating and went above and beyond. We asked about the grill (Which was put away for the winter) and the host not only came over to make it available for us, but then took another trip to replace the propane tank when it was missing a gasket.

First visit to Lake Placid. The McKinley House was the perfect home base! Great location to town, beach, Olympic center, hiking, fishing, restaurants……the list goes on! Lovely comfortable house with a large yard and a relaxing deck with beautiful flowering pots. The attention to all the little details was so nice.

We enjoying staying at this property very much. With just a short walk, you can get to Main Street, the Olympic Center, many bars and restaurants, and the Mirror Lake public beach area. We spent many moments sitting under the beautiful gazebo on the deck and on the screened-in porch. The house had everything we needed and we found the soft blankets very enjoyable and appreciated the beach chairs and beach towels. Sonja was extremely helpful and responsive!!

Well maintained in the center of everything. Very nice amenities and small touches that really made the difference. LOVED the outdoor spaces. If not for some rainy weather one of the days, would have probably spent all out time outdoors.

We were in town for a family wedding and were lucky enough to find this charming rental (and at a fraction of the cost of the hotels that had been recommended).
The home had every amenity you could possibly want. It was clean and stylish with comfortable beds. We absolutely loved the outdoor fire pit and pergola/pavilion on the deck. Sonja was a very attentive host and kept the lines of communication open. We highly recommend this lovely property!

Thank you for the incredible 5 star review. We're delighted to hear that the pavilion on the deck and fire pit were such a big hit with your family. We’re absolutely thrilled that you would recommend the house to others!"
This is a wonderful place to stay and is as advertised. We have rented many places, but none have two King size beds and smart TV in every room. Convenient to the center of town but if you are relaxing at home there is a very calming view of the mountains with the outside space and deck area. The kitchen is fully stocked, and the neighborhood is extremely quiet. Walkable to Mirror Lake or to take a ride on the shuttle. This is a place we will return to and were pleasantly surprised.

Our stay here was fantastic! When we arrived the check-in instructions were incredibly easy to follow and accurate. Even though there was a small issue with one of the bathrooms, Sonja was very understanding and responsive and had the issue sorted out in no time! The house was clean, functional and exactly as shown in the pictures. The highlight was being so close to downtown Lake Placid. We could walk everywhere in less than 15 minutes which made it easy to explore the surrounding town.
If you're thinking of spending a weekend in Lake Placid, look no further than here!

My family (2 adults, 2 early 20's) stayed at Sonja's mid August 2024 and thoroughly enjoyed our time. The house is charming, extremely comfortable and very well equipped (especially the kitchen) with everything you need in a quiet neighborhood. We made use of the firepit, grill, deck and enclosed porch which made a great place for morning coffee. Communication with Sonja was very timely. The location make walking to the Olympic center and downtown Lake Placid very convenient. Overall we loved our stay and would definitely recommend the house for anyone. Thanks Sonja.

My family and I had a wonderful experience staying at Sonja's house. The house was clean, comfortable and well maintained. The mattress that we stayed on felt new and comfortable (not too firm, not too soft) and the kitchen had all the amenities we needed for a comfortable/functional stay. We appreciated Sonja's little welcome package, and instructions on the house. Check-in / check-out were seamless. The bath towels were plush, water pressure was perfect. Honestly felt like I was staying in a home away from home and that was what we needed during our Ironman weekend. Thank you Sonja for the hospitable stay. We hope to visit again! - Maria

About the host
Hosted by Sonja
Lake Placid isn’t just where I host — it’s home. I’ve spent over 20 years managing long-term rentals here and the last 2 years hosting short-term stays, creating spaces that feel comfortable, welcoming, and genuinely cared for.
When I’m not hosting, you’ll find me outside — swimming, gardening, exploring the Adirondacks, or enjoying time with family. I’m always nearby and happy to help make your stay smooth, relaxing, and memorable.
Why they chose this property
I chose this neighborhood because it’s everything people come to Lake Placid for: quiet charm, mountain views, and walk-everywhere convenience. McKinley House is tucked into a peaceful, friendly area just minutes from Mirror Lake, the Olympic Center, great restaurants, local shops, and the Ironman finish line.
The vibe here is relaxed and welcoming. Mornings start with coffee on the screened porch overlooking the Olympic ski jumps. Days are spent exploring the village. Evenings wind down by the fire pit. McKinley House mirrors the neighborhood itself — cozy, comfortable, and full of character.
What makes this property unique
McKinley House is a one-of-a-kind blend of historic charm and modern comfort, with a location that’s hard to beat. Built in the 1850s, the home has beautiful character — from its creaky wood floors to its wraparound screened-in porch with views of the Olympic ski jumps.
What makes it truly special is the combination of space, privacy, and walkability. Guests have the entire two-story home to themselves, along with a deck, fire pit, and plenty of room to relax — all just minutes from downtown Lake Placid, Mirror Lake beach, and the Olympic venues. Whether you’re here to explore or just kick back, McKinley House offers a cozy, inviting stay in the heart of it all.
