Excellent Place, Property Manager, Location, Experience!

My beloved and I greatly enjoyed having this space as our home base for one week while we explored significant local architectural sites, Chicago, and offered a program at the nearby zen center. The booking went smoothly as Rob is a great communicator, and he was prompt in answering any questions both prior to booking and during the stay. He even attended our program, and it was a real pleasure to meet him in-person. In driving through many neighborhoods around Chicago, it is clear that Oak Park is a gem with particularly beautiful and varied houses and yards. Rob’s house is within walking distance to multiple Frank Lloyd Wright sites, parks, excellent restaurants, and the terrific Saturday Farmer’s Market. The unit is spacious and inviting, nicely decorated, and has a fully equipped kitchen. The cookware was high quality, which my beloved and I appreciated and were sure to handle carefully. I read all the reviews before reserving the unit, and none of the issues were present from the couple negative reviews (the spaces were all very clean and there were no signs of rodent activity, etc.). I wasn’t able to park inside the garage, as the description mentioned (due to a technical issue with the garage lock), but was able to park right next to it. The neighborhood feels very safe, so this was not an issue. Overall, this is one of the top stays in all my experience with short t-erm rentals/ VRBO’s. Thank you Rob!

Great location in Chicago

House was comfortable. There are two lovely porches to sit out in the morning or evening. You can walk to shops and stores. Television had lots of variety. Kitchen was well-equipped for making meals.

Great home, great neighborhood

We enjoyed our stay. The home was clean and ready, and the process was smooth all around. It's in a great spot, minutes from the green line and shopping. The porch was our favorite place to read and enjoy a pleasant meal together.

Needs Improvement

The good: Initial contact with the owner was pleasant. I was advised that a family was moving out from a long stay a few days before we arrived and that the owner's son lived a few blocks away if we needed anything. The bad: When we arrived, it appeared that the previous family had just moved out that day. In fact, they left some of their laundry behind. The TV wasn't hooked up properly and the power strip was buried under a mountain of loose wires. While it may have been Netflix compatible as listed, someone had really undone those properties and the TV didn't even go on the first time I hit the power button. Most noticeably, there was an odor that reminded me of a gas leak. Within an hour, I realized that the "gas leak" odor was "dead mouse somewhere". Possibly in the wall. I noticed several traps all over the floor and figured they must be doing their job somewhat. When we went to make the bed, we went through 6 sets of sheets before we found one that didn't have some kind of stain on it. The pillows had stains and holes in them. My wife slept on the couch because the smell in the master bedroom was so bad that she couldn't sleep. I emailed the owner about the smell and the sheets and our concern about the dead mouse (mice?) and received a response of "sorry to hear about the smell & stains. In the kids bdrm closet I believe the plastic bins have additional pillows and sheets". That was it. The next morning, when I woke up, my suspicions were confirmed when I turned on the kitchen light and a mouse scurried across the floor into a hole behind the sink. Then when we did some laundry in the basement that night, I saw a second mouse scurry out of a window and a 3rd mouse lying dead on the windowsill. We had nowhere else to go as our payment was already taken and we were using the rental as a one week transition while we moved into a new place. I bought new pillows to use while we stayed. There were used toiletries, used food in the filthy fridge, clothes, shoes, etc. My guess is that the owner lives there most of the year and rents it out while he is away. If I'm incorrect on that, then I don't know why there are so many personal items all over the place. Honestly, it was hard to move around a lot without fear of knocking something over. This was a very uncomfortable experience, and I'm writing this review in hopes of updates to the rental before someone else has the same experience that we did.

Too cluttered

The house has a great location and could be a great place to stay. We are people who like our rooms organized and uncluttered. The rooms and kitchen are filled with personal knickknacks and photos, children's drawings and toys. You felt like the owner just walked out and left everything as is which made us feel like intruders. The refrigerator was filled with food and there was barely room for our things without rearranging everything.

A seamless transformation from your home to this home

To live in this home you don't feel for a moment that you're in a stranger's house but in your own or a family member's house. The neighborhood is the best you can find in Oak Park. For Frank Lloyd Wright lovers, don't be surprised to see his legacy spread there as you drive around. Mr. Rob is a great host and he's on top of everything and there for you when you have questions or need anything. The piano I enjoyed playing when back from day-trips. The windows do not have screens but the front and back door do, so if you want a breeze in summer those are your choices, however the window AC unit in the dining room is set to automatic and turns on when the house heats up. (You can also manually turn it on or off). There were no curtains or privacy shades in the small bedroom so I used sheets to cover up the light to sleep as I'm sensitive to light as I sleep. There are many perks in this house including a nice Foosball in the basement and a nice large backyard. I'll recommend this house to anyone who likes historic homes in a historic neighborhood with modern amenities in the kitchen etc.

Like visiting an old friend

Visiting this home was like staying with a close friend. At first I was concerned that we were inhabiting someone else's space, given all the photos and life experiences surrounding us. But then it soon became a huge compliment that the owner trusted us enough to live among his whole life. It's a perfect location and a really easy place to eat, watch TV, play board games, go for walks, play in the garden - in other words to have a true home while away. And that's the name of the game, isn't it? Onto practicalities - this place suited us very well as we are a couple who wanted to stay with our son and grandson (aged 7). They shared in the bunk bedroom, overjoyed to do so still. But in a few years that could never have worked! Our bedroom was perfect, with room cleared in the cupboard for us to hang our clothes. We would stay there again on our own whenever possible. Our grandson is very calm and well behaved but, given the wobbly glass cabinet and a beautiful original bathroom, we would not have dared take most of the other 7 year old boys in our family there. Oak Park is magnificent and we were lucky to be there as the trees began their blossoming and tulips were all around. We are avid FLW fans and enjoyed the multitude of buildings to visit. The high street areas are full of magnificent places to eat, drink and shop. Trader Joe's makes cooking at 'home' so easy too. The TV's a little difficult to operate, but once you crack it it's fine. Go, relax, and enjoy!

Perfect Location!

This house is close to everything! The el into Chicago is only 5 blocks away. The beds are comfy and the shower has a lot of pressure. The kitchen is well stocked and the owner is VERY accommodating. Don't miss an Italian Beef sandwich with hot peppers from Bueno Beef on Roosevelt Road and a boneless rib sandwich from Robinson's on Madison! Poor Phil's is always fun for popcorn and a beer!

Clean, comfortable home on lovely, quiet street.

The owner was very responsive, helpful, offering tons of tips for travel, dining and names of neighbors. The first floor flat, where we stayed has two bedrooms, one bathroom, a dining room, living room, front and back porches. The back porch is a lovely place for morning coffee. My only criticism is that we couldn't open the windows to let fresh air in (no screens) so we had to use A/C - there's one window unit to cool the whole floor. It does a decent job, but doesn't really cool off the bedrooms.

Comfortable, quiet and close

The house is very cozy and well-maintained. It's close to the train and grocery store, and has a backyard and nice front porch. It definitely has a lived-in feel.

Lovely, comfortable home in historic Oak Park neighborhood, a short train ride from Chicago

This is a very comfortable, vintage home with lots of character, situated in a beautiful, historic neighborhood which is a short-and-safe walk from the train station and a full-service grocery store. The home is often occupied by the owner, making it different from your typical sparsely-furnished-and-decorated American vacation home. It’s not sterile like a hotel room; it’s lived-in and comfortable. Staying here was more like staying with a friend who happened to be absent, though we’ve never met the owner. We felt immediately at home. The kitchen is fully stocked for cooking. The living room has plenty of seating for lounging around in the evening. The wi-fi was strong. The beds were cozy. The furniture is comfortable and meant to be used (as opposed to being for décor – something I’ve come across in vacation homes before). The owner has a fabulous assortment of art on the walls. There’s a nice yard to use when the weather is nice. Having never been to Chicago before, I initially considered downtown hotels, but since I prefer renting homes to being stuck in a crowded hotel room all evening, I checked into this and other home rentals. And am I glad I did! Staying here made a huge difference to our vacation. We fixed our own breakfasts and dinners here at the house after spending hours walking around and seeing the sights of Chicago. Having rented this wonderful home in Oak Park, I can’t imagine why anyone would want to stay in a sterile, tiny hotel room in Chicago for a similar price or more. Oak Park is easy to get to and from via car and train, too. As the homeowner points out on VRBO, the upstairs is occupied by a lovely family. We didn’t really notice their presence much. The house is in a quiet area of single-family homes.
