Don’t rent to this guest. They broke into a cabinet and stole. These guests broke into a padlocked cabinet of my cleaning supplies. They stole all the spare kitchen hand towels, and, even though it’s just towels, this behavior is intrusive, gross, rude, and cheap. Which is a pretty perfect summation of my experience hosting these folks. Upon arrival they asked for additional towels and wash clothes. There were enough for everyone, but I would have left more if they asked before they arrived. I said I could send them $20 for towels, and they declined. I don’t leave tons of towels because guest take them to the river, and they come back damaged or not at all. This is my house, it isn’t a hotel. They did also have kitchen towels, hand towels, and plenty of paper towels. They expected me to mow the grass during their stay, even though they never asked, despite record rainfall before their stay. The grass was a little unkept because of the weather, but nothing extreme. I don’t allow dogs on the beds because I’ve had multiple dogs pee on multiple beds, and, even after a deep clean, it can be harm future guests with allergies. They didn’t agree with this rule, so they just didn’t follow it. The guest also left their number and said to call if I had questions. About what, my own house? This gave me the ick and felt intrusive. Don’t let these people in your house, they aren’t worth the trouble, and they might steal something more important than silly little hand towels.

I waited months to respond to this review and asked Vrbo take it down repeatedly as the guest never stayed at my house and wasn’t even supposed to enter the property. Vrbo told me this guest wouldn’t be able to review as she never stayed on the property, but that wasn’t true. I always assume when someone is cruel they’re struggling and need a little grace, so I never leave negative reviews even for difficult guests. This is seriously first negative review across platforms. But I’ve given Vrbo enough chances to remove this review, and they advised me to just respond. Denise called me disgruntled before entering the home, and said she couldn’t stay at the property as the fence was too short and her dog could climb over. She said her dog was aggressive, and couldn’t be around other dogs. I explained that if she had made her dog’s needs known before arrival, I wouldn’t have advised her to stay and canceled the booking. Every one of my neighbors have dogs. I said I would call Vrbo and cancel the reservation, so she could be refunded. I called an agent who repeatedly tried to call Denise, but she refused to answer. They asked me to call her, and say I’d cancel the booking. She said she wouldn’t leave because she couldn’t find another place. Every time she was inappropriate and rude, telling agents one thing, and telling me another. She hung up on me, and I called another agent explaining that I wanted her off the property as an aggressive dog was a danger to my neighbors dogs and their children. We’ve hosted a mastiff, a husky, a Great Dane, and many other dogs, whose owners had no issue. Finally an agent who was on the phone with Denise called me and asked about the situation. I explained she had to leave immediately, but she was refusing. The agent said he also said she needed to vacate. He asked if we could have a three way call where he would tell her she would be fully refunded, but she couldn’t stay. She was raising her voice and rude to the agent for no reason. She demanded I pay for her new rental. The agent said no, and I said nothing except to say her reservation was cancelled. The reason agents stopped working with her was to book another home was because she was so rude to them and demanding to stay at my home overnight without paying and after threatening to “ruin me.” The call was recorded. Finally, she agreed to leave. She was never even supposed to enter the home as she said she was too afraid, so I’m not sure how she knows what the house smells like. Denise did say my neighbors dog had entered my yard. My neighbors are sweet, and their kids sometimes walk up and down the street with their dog, so this may have been true. I can’t say. I drove by an hour later to make sure Denise was gone, and the gate was open but the yard was empty. I spoke to my neighbor, and they agreed to keep their dog inside or in a kennel when I have guests. I totally understand if the fence wasn’t appropriate for this lady’s dog, but if she would have asked for the fence height I would have happily offered this and any addition info. Hosts can’t help say if a property is appropriate for a stay without any input from guests. I knew nothing about this dog until checkin. I would have honestly let her spend the night at a massively reduced rate just to be nice if she wouldn’t have immediately screamed at me, threatened me, and talked down to agents. I would avoid this guest if for no other reason than she told me she had an aggressive dog who needs a “dog proof fence.” She kept saying her dog was “special,” and that it couldn’t be around other dogs. If she would have made these needs known, I would not have kept the reservation for everyone’s safety. If you book this guest, make sure you check in with the needs of her and her dog to avoid issues. Again, I really didn’t want to write this negative review, but it’s unbelievably unfair that someone who never stayed on the property can rate and review the place. I wish Denise and her dog all the best, I really do. I can also offer more pictures on request if somebody wants them, and again would have happily offered them to Denise if asked.
