About this property
Islesboro Island Maine Oceanfront Home on 12 Private Acres
Dates for May and June 2026 now open. Please note, I am not yet accept bookings for 2027.
Beautiful, private oceanfront house on 12 wooded acres on Islesboro Island, Maine. Islesboro is a 20 minute ferry ride from Lincolnville, a few miles north of Camden. It is an unspoiled, quiet place. The nearby towns on the mainland are some of the prettiest on the coast.
The house has four bedrooms: two queen beds, one full bed, and a twin bed up in a tower; as well as a sun porch with a twin daybed. There is a full kitchen, satellite Smart TV, very good wifi (the island has its own municipal broadband), fireplace, washer and dryer, charcoal grill. The property has 840 feet of private shoreline, with mussels to find at low-tide, if you are diligent. There is a vegetable and flower garden that may produce well into the fall.
New and old renters take note! As of May 2024, the house has air conditioning in the three main bedrooms, large bathroom and living room, kitchen and dining area in the form of split system heat pumps.
The island and the house are low-key. Although there are many activities on the island in the summer -- public beaches, trails, little nature walks for children, community center activities, opportunities for sailing lessons, etc. -- time spent there is largely about relaxing, ambling around, thinking about what to make for dinner, wandering to the shore and back, looking at the sky and water. The island is not "developed"; there are a handful of wonderful little stores, a farmers' market and a cafe open in summertime and there are two grocery stores and a library, but that is about it. It is an ideal place to unwind and be away.
This is a whole-house, private rental. Dogs are welcome and the property and island in general is a paradise for them.

About the host
Hosted by Mary Zimmerman
I am a professor and a theatre director and writer. I also direct opera. I designed and built the house with my long-time set designer.
Why they chose this property
Like most people, I came to the island first on the invitation of a friend. Within a few years I purchased the property and built the house a few years after that. I chose the spot for its privacy. No other house is visible from my house unless you really know where to look. The primary views are across Turtlehead Bay, where the sun rises, and it is a two minute walk to see the sunset. It is beautiful, peaceful, calm; far from the main road, surrounded only by trees and water. The island is a sort of heaven.
What makes this property unique
The feeling of being on an island is unique: there is a deeper sense of relaxation, a deeper safety. I sleep better there than anywhere in the world. My dog is free and full of himself.
