Mt Hope Heritage Home - Step back in time in this unique three bedroom home.
Your Mount Hope adventure begins at this terrific 3-bedroom house. Nestled in the Southern Appalachian Mountains, this charming property offers a cozy retreat for guests. This home is less than 30 minutes away from the New River Gorge National Park, Winterplace Ski Resort and the Scouting High Adventure Center. This historic home has plenty of rooms including a comfortable living room, study, formal dining room, a dine-in kitchen, and a screened-in back porch, so there's plenty of space for everyone to unwind. The house features all the convenient amenities you would expect.
This home is one of the oldest in Mount Hope. The house was built in 1910 as the home and office for the doctor that served the people living in "The Little Town with a Big Welcome". James and Lucy Wilkins, my grandparents, purchased this home in 1940 from the doctor. James was the accountant for the New River Coal Company having moved to the area in 1920s. This home has been restored to its original appearance reflecting the styles of the Victorian / Art Nouveau eras. Come and step back in time in this unique home and enjoy all that Mount Hope and the surrounding areas have to offer when you stay at our place.

We absolutely loved our stay. Everything was thought of by the hosts. There was plenty to read and the screened patio made for an amazing place for morning coffee. It was spotless and they provided awesome meal recommendations.
My daughter and I stayed here for our New River whitewater trip and enjoyed our stay very much. Very clean, plenty of room and fun decor. It is a great location close to the New River Gorge and Gauley River. Next year we plan on staying here again when we raft the Gauley River. I would and have recommended this place to friends and family.
We truly enjoyed our two-night stay here. The house was spotless, beautifully maintained, and so comfortable—it felt like home the moment we walked in. We especially appreciated the peaceful atmosphere and all the thoughtful touches that made our visit easy and relaxing. Everything was just as described, and even better in person. Thank you for sharing such a lovely place with us. We hope to return again!
Very cute house!!! Loved the framed letters of the notification of best garden! It felt like going to Grandmas house! I wish I could have stayed longer!
We loved staying here while visiting family and attending the Bridge Day. This a beautiful home that is truly a step back in time, but with modern amenities. The hosts were excellent and highly responsive.
Great location to visit either Beckley or New River Gorge Bridge! This 1910 house has been well maintained and has charming furnishings. Beds were comfortable and happy we had WiFi!
I loved everything about this home! It was spacious enough for the 5 of us. The hosts provided everything and more: towels and linen, soap and shampoo, coffee, small cooking essentials such as nonstick spray, oil, salt & pepper, family games, travel and tourist information. It was all there! And I particularly loved the history of the home that was evident everywhere. What a gem.
Step back in time as you enter grandma‘s house and feel the nostalgia with modern day updates and conveniences. Some of the furniture is a bit delicate, but that goes with the antiques feel of the entire house. Beds were comfy- not too soft. Back of the house has a secluded feel from the screened in porch. The house is right along the road, but insulated from most of the road noise. Jeff and Mary Ann were prompt with communication and clear with check in/out instructions.
Property was very clean and match the descriptions online. Plenty of room and a very nice home! Many amenities available inside the home. The hosts were very responsive and generous with the early check-in. I would definitely go back and highly recommend anybody looking for a place to stay in West Virginia to explore the Appalachian area and New River gorge, hiking or water activities to check this place out.
Comfortable, clean, and convenient way to spend a week in New River Gorge NP
What a find this place was! Loved the retro decor but with modern appliances and amenities. Very comfy beds and furniture, and lovely screened porch facing the woods. Mt. Hope is not much of a town but it’s located about halfway between the northern and southern ends of the NP which made for shorter drives in either direction to access trails. Both Beckley and Fayetteville are 15 minutes away where there are stores and restaurants for stocking up or eating meals out. This rental was such a great way to unwind and relax after exploring the NP each day. Jeff and Mary Ann are wonderful, responsive hosts!
We loved our stay at this well maintained home close to New River Gorge NP. It was like stepping back in time to Grandma's house, but with modern comfort. Looks even better in person than the pictures! You can tell the owners put a lot of time and effort into this place - the details are amazing; right down to the fancy toilet! :) Comfy beds, plenty of towels/linens and an adequately equipped kitchen. Jeff and Mary Ann were prompt in communicating when I had questions. Be sure to check out "The Table" for lunch or an early dinner - it closed at 6pm while we were there! Would stay here again if ever in the area again.

Lisa and Family,
Thank you very much for review and all the suggestions you provided to us. We will definitely take your advice, so we can improve our house for all future guests. Please come back and stay with us anytime.
No complaints at all. The house is comfortable and has all the amenities anyone would want. The decor is a terrific blend of modern and vintage, very tastefully done. It is too bad that Mt Hope itself has seen better days, but if you are looking for proximity to the national park and other local restaurants and amenities, this location is perfect - you'll be within about 20-30 minutes to most everything. The house is on a fairly busy road, but it was quiet inside, so that was not an issue for us. One suggestion I would have for the owners would be to provide a power strip or two in the bedrooms - between my wife and me, we had four devices to charge (phones, tablets, watches) and there were not enough easily accessible outlets in close proximity to the bed. Overall though, this was a wonderful place to spend a few days!! We would absolutely visit again, with no hesitation!
We stayed for two nights on our trip back from Savannah to break up the drive and check out new river gorge park. House worked well for our group of six. Owners did a beautiful job of updating the amenities while maintaining the old house charm. This property is not for everyone but we really enjoyed checking out some of the old books, framed letters, and other items. The house is stocked with a mix of vintage items, reproductions, and modern functional pieces with vintage styling. Owners certainly spared no expense with the kitchen appliances which are all brand new with the classic styling. House is well stocked with cookware and dishes which are all in great shape as they haven’t been abused by renters yet. Owners provided literature for all the local attractions and park which was very helpful in planning our visit. House is conveniently located to the park which was amazing and I wish we had allowed more than one day to explore. My only complaint is that the bedrooms are a little crowded and while the furniture is beautiful I would personally remove some items to allow a bit more space. It should be noted that the kids room with the three beds is accessed through one of the other bedrooms. This was not a problem for us but is worth noting. All in all we were very happy with the accommodations and would book again if we are ever back in the area.

About the host
Hosted by Jeffry Wilkins
My wife and I are life-long Knoxvillians. We both graduated from the University of Tennessee. My wife is an RN and I am an architect.
I inherited this house from my Grandparents and renovated it so guests would have a unique stay experience of "stepping back in time" to the 1930 / 40s, when my father lived at home.
We have enjoyed coming to the area of many years to hike, raft and ski and wish to provide this same opportunity to our guests that come and visit this area.
Why they chose this property
My house is located in the mining town of Mount Hope, WV. The house was built in 1910 at the heyday of WV coal rush for the New River Coal Companies' doctor. The house is located on the outskirts of Mount Hope on the bypass around town. You can enjoy views of the town from the front porch or set on a back porch for a secluded view of the forested backyard.
The house is also located at the mid-point of the New River Gorge National Park were you can easily access either the north or south ends of the national park for a multitude of outdoor activities. The house is also located just a 10 minute drive to The Summit, a high adventure camp, of the Boy Scouts of America. The Summit also offers its facilities to numerous public event each year.
What makes this property unique
My house is unique because of its heritage as one of the few remaining original houses left in this mining town. It also provides a different type experience from any other guest houses in the area, since it provides a nostalgic stay harkening you back in time to when you would have visited your grand or great grandparents. The house contains the original antique furniture with all the amenities of new retro kitchen and bath fixtures.
