Spring is rapidly approaching and rentals in West Jefferson book fast. If you are looking for a cozy, special place for just you, or both of you, we hope you'll stay with us!
After traveling for 4 years, we settled in the charming town of West Jefferson, North Carolina, in an established neighborhood, a 5 minute walk to downtown shops, cafes and art galleries. We were thrilled our home included an artist's studio atop the garage, just behind our home, but decided we would prefer to use the studio for friends and family; a guesthouse close enough for socializing but far enough for everyone to have their own space. In between family and friends we are opening our guesthouse, Vogelsang (German for birdsong), to you, and whether you are a couple or solo traveler, we are committed to making you as comfortable as family.

There is ample off street parking, 15 stair steps to the studio and a small deck for enjoying views of Little and Big Phoenix Mountains. Inside is a queen bed with soft sheets, plenty of pillows (you can never have too many pillows), comforter and extra blankets for those cool nights in the mountains. The bath has a shower, toilet, small sink, towels and ample hooks. A dorm frig, microwave, coffee maker and coffee, is in the nook.

If you or your companion are super tall, you may find the 6'9" ceilings confining. The entry door is 5'8" and everyone instinctively ducks, even if they are only 5'2". But once inside, you will find everything you need for a cozy, comfortable stay. Wi-fi, TV, air conditioning, heat, peace and quiet!

When you are ready to explore downtown, a quick walk, or drive, through the Town park, past basketball, pickle ball and tennis courts, playground, the Ashe County Library, to all the activity and excitement of shops, cafes and galleries. Grab a coffee and sweet at Hatchet Coffee, lunch at an English Tea Room, a movie, or beer in the evening at one of two craft breweries. The trolley to the Old Barn Winery departs and returns downtown on the weekends on a regular schedule. Hop on and leave the driving to them. You can even choose your Christmas Tree while there.

We absolutely loved our stay. The home was small but had everything we needed. The owners are extremely nice and recommended several places to eat and visit as well as an ironing board as we were going to a wedding. The room was clean and organized with beautiful views. It was a short walk to town to see all the shops. I’d highly recommend this place to anyone going to West Jefferson.

The listing is very accurate. It is a nice room with everything needed to enjoy some quiet and a good night sleep. Parking in West Jefferson is no problem, so although it is a walkable distance to town, driving is a little more convenient. The owners were very welcoming and pleasant to talk to. We will definitely stay here again in the future.

Great stay!

Loved hearing the birds first thing in the morning! Very nice clean location! It is not large and they still had thought of all the details! We go back and forth to this area so we will continue to stay here! So easy to go out to eat and the farmers market. The hosts were perfect. They made sure we did not need anything but didn’t bother us at all. Will love going back.

Wonderful, very convenient

I came for my Uncle's Celebration of Life Ceremony, so I was by myself. This was a perfect place. Very easy to find and I could walk to the main street quite easily. Al and Devon provided very helpful information at the apartment. Apartment was as described and parking was easy.

I stayed during the snow storm and Devon and Al were helpful, welcoming and warm. Vogelsang Cottage is just a few steps from our home. We are the gardeners. We are the maintenance crew. We are the cleaning crew. If you need anything, we are here to help, whether it's advice on the best restaurant, the name of a flower or just to replace a lightbulb.

Why they chose this property

We visited this house on the Ashe County Studio Tour in August 2023 when the garage was a pottery studio and the guest house was an artist's studio. We immediately fell in love with the charming house and gardens! Little did we know the house would, unexpectedly, come up for sale two weeks later. In less than 24 hours, we made an offer and would soon become the VERY proud owners.

As Florida natives, we dreamed of escaping to the mountains and finally had an opportunity when we retired. But first, we wanted to travel, so we sold everything we owned and for 4 years roamed America in an RV with our dog Penny, even venturing overseas for a spell, looking for the perfect place to call home.

When we settled in West Jefferson, we realized we missed all the wonderful, fellow travelers we met on the road, and decided to bring those wandering souls to our home. Thus, we created Vogelsang Cottage where friends, family and weary travelers alike can find a home, even if only for a couple days.

Now that autumn has given way to approaching winter, the mountains take on a serene calm. Snowy roads can present driving challenges but the Town of West Jefferson does an excellent job keeping roads cleared of snow.
