About this property
Barn at Schooner Point- A Romantic Escape
Please read the full description:
The Barn is an idyllic, peaceful escape from the summertime crowds in town. Located on the bluffs above Long Island Sound, it has a spectacular view of passing boats and sunsets from the large windows on the west side, and sweeping views of the Audubon property from the open hayloft doors on the east An outside stairway leads to the upper floor of the Barn, one large space with a king-size bed built up for views to the west and a queen-size bed at the other end. The bathroom with shower is a separate room with a window above the sink overlooking rolling fields and the sunrise. The kitchen area has granite counters and two sinks and is furnished with a small fridge, an electric two-burner cooker, coffee machine, toaster oven, etc. The ground floor of the Barn is used as a studio/sculpture gallery and as storage for vehicles in the winter… not used when guests are in residence. The separate driveway to the Barn passes the owner's large vegetable and flower garden. There is a picnic table and charcoal grill, hammock and Adirondack chairs for relaxing in the sun. The property has a private path to the rocky beach, excellent for surf-casting, beach combing and picnics. Swimming is not recommended because of the difficulty in getting in and out of the water over the stones. Suitable for a couple or a small family, the Barn at Schooner Point is romantic. A car is strongly recommended because it is at the end of a long dirt road, about 3 miles from the ferry, restaurants and swimming beaches.
The barn is not winterized so strong winds from the west and east can make it drafty inside. There is a vented kerosene heater which works well to heat the space. It is possible to be comfortable in the barn in November and December if it is not too windy or bitterly cold.

This is by far the most beautiful place I’ve ever stayed on the island. The view, the charm and romance of the barn and our amazing host Leslie are what made this stay so very special. The barn and it’s location bring out the essence and beauty that is Block Island.
I went with my husband for our anniversary. It couldn’t have been more perfect. The view the location. It was breathtaking and so relaxing, which is exactly what we needed.
This is one of the most calming and beautiful spaces I have ever been to. There is no hotel in the world that could give the calming effect of waking up or going to sleep looking out that window. Thank you for sharing this with the world.
Everything was absolutely amazing. The place was so relaxing and everything we were looking for. The hosts were spectacular and very responsive. We will definitely be back!
We stayed a week for our honeymoon and loved it. The ocean views were magical and fantastic. We especially enjoyed the sea breeze and the quiet location.
The barn is just a very special hide away. So private and charming. A very unique experience. The view of the ocean is just heavenly. You can relax on a hammock or walk down to the rocky beach.
Fantastic location, with an excellent view. Not suitable for anyone planning to stay for a week and do a fair amount of cooking. The refrigerator is a college type mini refrigerator with a barely functional freezer.

The Barn isn’t meant for people who want to do a lot of cooking. It’s described quite accurately on the VRBO website as having a small under the counter refrigerator, a cooktop (no real stove with oven), a toaster oven, coffee maker etc. We got you a second small refrigerator which you forgot to mention. You should rent a more expensive house with a full kitchen next time you come to Block Island.
We had a great two night stay (2 adults and 2 children). The views and location were beautiful. The barn was comfortable and perfect for the 4 of us for a couple nights on the island.
The barn was a great experience for my wife and I, we had one of the best sunsets I have ever seen one of the nights. Would definitely suggest staying there, very peaceful.

About the host
Hosted by Leslie Hartnett
We inherited this 10 acre property from my husband's parents who bought it in 1946. The original house was built in 1840 and we have added on to it, doing all the work ourselves. We are both artists; Sean is a sculptor of stone and Leslie does reliefs in terracotta/majolica. We live 6 months in our house on the property (May-November) and 6 months in Pietrasanta, Italy (November-May. We built the Barn in 1997.
Why they chose this property
Sean's family bought the property because they fell in love with Block Island and with Schooner Point in particular. They felt it was very like Ireland with its brilliant blues and greens and its rolling stone walls. They chose this particular spot because it was far (3 miles) from the more populated parts of the island and because it was so near the ocean. In 1946 there was much to choose from but Schooner Point won their hearts.
What makes this property unique
No matter how crowded it gets in the summer on Block Island, it's always peaceful at Schooner Point. The barn is waterfront and there is a giant window overlooking the ocean. The main king size bed is built up directly in front of that window. There are large barn doors which, when open, have a beautiful view of the Audubon property.
