Walk to Downtown Asheville, Montford Historic District, quiet alley, 30 day min.
This cozy 1940's bright and sunny Cottage served as the Architect owner's home while he designed and built his new home in 2006 on the nearby footprint of a historic home lost to a fire in 1970. Accessed by a narrow quiet alleyway, it is within a 10 min walk through this great neighborhood to our vibrant downtown and UNCA. Also within a mile to the Interstate, YMCA, Grocery stores (Whole foods and Trader Joes) and dozens of restaurants, microbreweries and coffee shops. Wood floors and windows, under mature trees, and surrounded by lush landscaping in a neighborhood full of lovingly restored homes and B&B's, mature trees, brick sidewalks, stone walls and bordered by a greenway along a creek. Fully equipped kitchen (DW, utensils, pots/pans, etc.), W/D, 2 queen beds, 2 sets of linens, comforters, desk, satellite TV, wireless internet, and all utilities included. Private 50mb wireless network is shared with my adjacent carriage house. The Cottage is on one level, includes a fireplace, vaulted ceilings and skylights, a side porch with gas grille, and a nice secluded lawn with chairs. 30 DAY MIN stay, unless you see gaps between reservations in the calendar. Perfect for relocations, or rented along with the adjacent Carriage House ( #139941) with family or friends coming to town for a group vacation. Parking for one car in front of the cottage, with shared additional space in front of the carriage house. The alleyway and driveway are narrow, so larger vehicles will be tight, trucks might need to park nearby.

The cottage is adorable, comfortable and in a great neighborhood. We loved walking into downtown Asheville and the greenway in Reed Creek only a few blocks away.
The host was very available to answer questions and to assist us. We had no issues with the house and are definitely considering renting it again.
Great location, close to everything, grocery stores, downtown, highway. Check-in process was seamless and host was readily available when needed. Quiet neighborhood and walking/jogging trails nearby. The cottage was very comfortable, tastefully furnished, and well provided with everything that’s needed. We enjoyed the early flowering trees right in front of the entrance door.
I was very pleased with my stay. Surrounded by many other homes close together I was happy that it felt secluded because of all the trees and bushes it was nestled in, and quiet, even though life was happening all around. Almost every place you could want to go to was just to walk away. And any place else was just a short ride to get to. There is so much to see in Asheville itself, but the surrounding area is just lovely.
I definitely recommend it!
We couldn't have asked for a better location! The house was a 15-minute walk to some of the best shops and restaurants in Asheville. The cottage was cozy, comfy and bright (skylights!). The wireless was slow and spotty, but we got by. The cottage driveway is accessed via the alley. The entry drive has a VERY narrow entry, with a low stone wall on either side that was difficult to see because of the shrubs. A bit of a challenge for sure. Thanks again Michael for hosting us :-)
We had a great Thanksgivng at the cottage! It had everything we needed to cook. The kids loves the house. It was the perfect location so close to all that Asheville has to offer.

Historic Mumford Cottage
After traveling 9,000 miles, crisscrossing America (staying in HomeAways), the cottage in Historic Mumford couldn’t have been more welcoming. Besides the location being superb—within easy walking distance to the heart of Asheville, the Cumberland Alley setting of this two bedroom cottage couldn’t have been better. Yet, the cottage isn’t so much a cottage as a home. The entire feel is of families past, present, and those to come. This is especially true as the owner lives in a home just beyond the fence and is there to immediately take care of any concerns or needs you might have. This truly answer’s Robert Frost’s question of do “good fences make good neighbors” because you couldn’t find better in both landlord and “newest of friends” in the owner/architect. Meaning, our only problem with our stay at the cottage was that it was too short . . . And hopefully, someday, we can remedy that by again taking in all the warmth and comfort of the little “inn” in the alley.

Beautiful and Spacious Cottage!
I would highly recommend this cottage! It's in a wonderful and historic neighborhood close to downtown, yet it also provides a private oasis down a quaint alleyway. High ceilings, skylights and two large bedrooms cleverly maximize space and everything is extremely clean and comfortable. Michael is responsive and around if you need him, but otherwise he leaves you to explore on your own. I enjoyed my stay here immensely!

Couldn't be happier
There was nothing not to like about this place. It's an older cottage but is immaculately kept and felt very clean. Very cozy, but the space was well used and it never felt too small despite having 2 adults and two preschool boys living there for a month. It felt small, but not TOO small. The driveway is a challenge, but I got a large Tundra up and down multiple times so it can be done if you're careful. The location - probably one of the best spots in Asheville for accessibility but also privacy and the neighborhood has amazing character. The property owner was easily contacted and responded promptly, he was available but never once did it feel imposing. Even when he left town he made sure we knew where he'd be and who to contact otherwise. Can't say enough good things about this cottage, if you book it you'll be more than pleased.

Historic cottage close to Downtown
My wife and I stayed at the Carriage House for a month, and it's a most enjoyable place to appreciate lively downtown Asheville. It's eight minutes walking to the Grove Arcade, and a few more minutes to anywhere downtown. The flat is homey, the kitchen is cozy and comfortable, bathrooms are basic but workable. One bedroom is huge, the other smaller but fine for a couple. We loved the upper deck outside and we would have our coffee there every morning in complete privacy.
The stack washer dryer worked fine [noisy in the spin cycle!] and the TV was digital. We brought our own Roku Box and the cable had the normal 68 [?] channels. Internet was excellent - about 50 mbps.
The driveway will NOT take a large SUV like a Suburban, but our medium sized SUV was fine.
Michael our host was most accommodating, and there if you need him.
The three local restaurants are great....Tods, Chiesa and Nine Mile are all very popular with the locals.....great food, reasonable prices.

The location is excellent
Pros for the cottage:
1) Location 5 stars. Being able to walk downtown or to Harris Teeter or Trader Joe's was amazing. It was especially helpful when there was a foot of snow on the ground and cars were snowed in. Plus the Montford area was wonderful to walk through.
2) Cottage itself 4 stars. It was very comfortable and the furnishings were good. Overall it was in a quiet area. And it was very clean.
Cons
1) Parking 1 star. I give it one star because there is off street parking. However it is very tough to get in and out of the parking area. I had a compact SUV and as careful as I was (and I was VERY careful) I scrapped my bumper. A much smaller car might be fine. Also there are only 3 spaces. One for each unit and an extra. When I was there there were two cars at the carriage house so no extra space for visitors.
2) When I was there the cottage was missing a coffee maker and tea kettle. I brought my own. There was a small French press.
3) Dog barking - for those sensitive to dog barking there are 3 dogs 2 houses down and when they are out they are barking loudly. Also the owner had what I call a yapper - a small dog with an annoyingly loud bark. It would come out all hours of the day and night and run to the fence by the cottage and bark at nothing.
4) Wireless - it was fast but shared between the two units. If the other unit was using something bandwidth intensive like Netflix the wireless slowed down to a crawl. There was a backup wireless that was much slower but when the faster wireless network was down for a big chunk of time this slow link was used by both units and by someone at the main house. It was very slow at times too.
Would I stay here again? No the parking is too difficult to use. It might be OK with a much smaller car.
Would I recommend this to others? No

As noted, the driveway coming from the single lane alleyway between two stone walls is snug. If you have a SUV or larger, beware.
I prefer (and expect) that guests will only have one car. This is a historic neighborhood with carriage houses, stone walls, gardens and large trees, so extra parking is a luxury.
If something is missing, such as a coffee maker, I will gladly walk across the lawn with a replacement if I am made aware of it. Sometimes the cottage turns over in one day and I don't notice missing kitchen things.
The 12mb wireless network is shared with the carriage house. I was unaware the capacity was insufficient, I will investigate upgrading.
This is a fairly dense and active neighborhood near downtown, so expect the usual sounds of dogs, garbage trucks, kids playing, etc.

Quiet & Cozy!
My husband and I stayed here for a month, with our 3 year old son. It was very quiet, comfortable and had everything we needed. Greenlife and Trader Joe's are within walking distance, and there are plenty of parks and trails nearby. The location is perfect for getting to know Asheville. Everything was clean and cozy, and the owner was very helpful. I'd definitely recommend this rental!

Ideal Rental Cottage
My husband and I spent the month of October in this wonderful cottage. The decor was cozy and comfortable. The kitchen had everything you could possibly need. Very quiet location. Great wifi. Easy walk to downtown. In beautiful historic district. There are restaurants nearby and groceries just a few blocks away. We have been traveling full time for nearly two years (renting as we go) and this was our favorite place to date. I would highly recommend this rental.

Cozy & Convenient Cottage
My husband, daughter and I stayed here over a long holiday weekend. The house was very convenient to all Asheville has to offer and was very nicely appointed. Mike, the owner, was easy to get a hold of when we had questions. We would definitely stay here again.

Perfect Rental for our Asheville Transition
We were so fortunate to find this Montford rental home for our transition to Asheville. It was up to date, modern, and conveniently located within the city of Asheville. The home is tastefully decorated and was very comfortable for my husband and I and our two young sons while we looked for a home to purchase. We're so thankful the cottage was available as we made our transition to Asheville. I would highly recommend it if you are looking for a convenient, comfortable rental home in Asheville. We enjoyed our stay tremendously!
