Charming 1911 cottage in the heart of Asheville - walk 4 blocks to downtown
Our 'butterscotch' cottage is a peaceful hidden gem located in the heart of Asheville. Beautiful high ceilings and the original tall diamond-paned glass windows fill the historic 2-BR/1-Bath cottage with sunshine. Outside offers a lush evergreen private porch and patio. Driveway off-street parking space is tucked alongside the house in this safe and quiet neighborhood.
The house has new central heat and air, all new appliances, washer/dryer, side-by-side refrigerator, dishwasher, disposal, range, microwave, gas grill. There is outdoor lighting on the patio and exterior furniture for sitting or dining.
An historical 1911 cottage, it was once owned by the Thomas Wolfe family. The location is ideal for walking to downtown restaurants, grocery stores, night life, and shopping. Quiet brick sidewalks lined with honeysuckle and hollyhocks take you along a tranquil avenue to the vitality of Asheville’s cosmopolitan downtown – a 4-block walk -- see map in our photos.
While one is exploring the animated downtown another could play golf at the famous Victorian Grove Park Inn Golf Club less than 2 miles away– or fly fish in the idyllic mountain rivers within an hour’s drive.
We have greatly enjoyed sharing the open floor plan in the kitchen/dining/living area. The space is perfect for small dinner gatherings. We've loved sitting at the granite countertop sharing morning pastries from the nearby bakery.
There are two cheerful private bedrooms. The 'yellow' room has a queen-sized bed and the 'aqua' room has a daybed that makes into a king. Even the living room sofa makes into a double bed if needed.
Four to five people can easily gather around the heart of the house at the granite countertop for easy meals from Trader Joes or delivered from many top local restaurants by Valet Gourmet. But the grill and kitchen also allow you to cook for yourselves.
The completely private back patio has a gas grill. Sculptural barstools like those at the River Arts District make good perches for listening to birds while enjoying morning coffee or a cool drink in the shade at the outside bar.
Children are welcome and a dog will be considered.
The full kitchen is elegantly and functionally outfitted for enjoyment by our guests. There is a full bath with tub and shower. Mirrors in bedrooms allow a couple to share efficiently.
Hi-speed wireless internet/Cable TV.

Charming cottage in a great location in a walkable neighborhood close to Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Owl Bakery, and Taco Temple. Easy walk to downtown Asheville. Excellent host. We really enjoyed our stay.
We loved our month long stay here! The house is well stocked with cookware, cleaning supplies, and entertainment. And the location is super convenient for grocery shopping or walking to a coffee shop! I would absolutely stay again.
This was a very pleasant experience from start to finish. The host had easy and timely communication. The house was charming and cool and in a great location with nice neighbors and a walkable neighborhood. I saw a bear with two cubs down the street one day! I especially liked the cool and shady front porch. Thanks for everything- I hope to return again soon!
We absolutely loved our stay at this property. The place was very clean, well-stocked and had more space than we expected when we first arrived. Everything is a 5 minute drive from here too and the park a short walk away was a great place to take our dog. Also, the landlord was very responsive and helpful.
We are repeat guests at this adorable cottage, because we all liked it so much! Very comfortable. Great location! About 20 minutes walk to downtown. I love how Trader Joes is very close. The kitchen is well stocked with everything I needed to cook. Owners are very helpful and friendly. I hope to stay again at this property.
It rained quite a bit, but we enjoyed ourselves in the quaint little house . This is our third stay and we look forward to returning again. A great walkable neighborhood with many great nooks and crannies to explore. Asheville is like having a very interesting next door neighbor!! Must venture out to visit Weaverville, Black Mountain and Banner Hill. Can't go wrong booking with Richard, he is wonderful and very helpful
This was our second stay and we have 2 more reserved. That should say it all This has proven to be the perfect get away spot for us. The owner and his son are very congenial and accommodating. The house is in perfect condition with all amenities provided with much thought. Even down to sharp knives in the kitchen! Very convenient and safe neighborhood;. walked my dogs late at night armed with only a flashlight and poop bags.
we stayed a month in here order to make a move to Asheville from MN. this cottage was a comfortable, cozy, with high ceilings so it isn’t at all cramped. everything you need to survive plus a nice front porch, cute trees, and a mocking bird! we love the neighborhood (walking distance to downtown & to many great restaurants etc) so much that we ended up finding an apartment quite close ! we awoke to find a black bear peeking in through the window one morning but the locals assured us that they aren’t aggressive & she wandered off quietly without incident.
This Asheville location was perfect for my stay. I came to escape the north country winter and to experience a more vibrant and diverse area. I learned I was staying in the Yoga district (with monthly yoga passes @ Asheville Yoga Center, v reasonable). Lots of eateries and a great local art and music scene. Springs comes early in Asheville … and as soon as it warmed up the parks came alive with impromptu music jams. Everyone was so welcoming.
Richard’s home was perfect, well stocked kitchen, bright sunny windows and lovely tall ceilings. Apple TV + was a real treat for me as well. Everything added up to a perfect stay!
This house and the location are all around wonderful and the price was more than reasonable. We (me, wife, infant, and dog) stayed for a total of 6 weeks, with my clean-freak mother-in-law staying with us for 4 weeks, and my mother staying for 1 week. Both my mother and MIL were surprised with how clean the house was and how comfortable it stayed even during a heat wave. They were more or less at the house all day with our infant, so their opinion counts for something! Even with 3.5 humans and a dog, the house never felt too small and truly met all of our needs.
The neighborhood is phenomenal, the street is super quiet, and it’s close to everything you could ever need or want. We hope to be moving back to Asheville next year and may need a place to live while transitioning between houses and this will be at the top of our list to stay.
Whether you’re looking to visit Asheville for a week, or 12 weeks, this is a great property for you!
house had rats… Owner son said I should stay there a day he sent out an exterminator because he live too far away, exterminator… Came out and found multiple rat droppings that were new & old under the sink pulled back the stove found multiple holes saw one large rat run across the floor had to have VRBO get me another property… Second property was great but this particular one the first one was my worst experience ever

She saw a mouse and assured me it wouldn’t cause her to give a bad review. So much for honest communication.
100 year old houses can let a mouse in now and then. It is not a typical problem.
Richard’s Historical Cottage is so very Asheville - delightful, charming and interesting
First and foremost Richard is a truly wonderful host - very responsive whenever a question arose and very helpful throughout the entire process. The attention to detail is certainly appreciated when visiting a new area - wonderful recommendations and easy directions to access the home.
The cottage is quite quaint and was perfect for the visit by my sister (it has two bedrooms, one small bathroom). Everything one needs is available within minutes of the property - a fabulous Trader Joe’s and a very well-stocked Harris Teeter is within minutes to the home.
There is a fenced front yard off the covered front porch. There is a bit of an incline on the driveway but it is large enough to accommodate a large SUV and it is always great to have off-street parking. There are a few steps to access the front door and porch but very manageable. I look forward to a future visit! Thank you Richard for being such a warm and thoughtful host! I genuinely appreciate everything you handled for my visit to the beautiful Asheville area. Tricia
We stayed at the property for 5 weeks, having a roving band of visitors during that time. We loved the place, but there are somethings you should be aware of when considering the rental. The biggest issue is the steepness and narrowness of the driveway. Our Toyota Camry is on the lower side and we had issues with scraping the car on the sloped driveway. There is no off street parking in front of the house due to the narrowness of the street. There is room for two cars in tandem in the driveway. We took to making passengers get in and out of the car in the road, with the driver then being able to squeak in without further scraping. It is best to enter the driveway from the uphill part of the road to minimize potential to scrape. On the other hand, the house is only a 15 minute walk to downtown, so as long as the bears were not out and about...yes, city bears, plural...we left the car behind and walked in. The adolescent bear seemed harmless enough, and even charming when he came to the door to welcome us, but when he got chased towards us by a larger bear, we hightailed it back to the house and drove downtown! The house itself is charming and in a neighborhood filled with historical homes with beautiful gardens, a short walk to Trader Joes which was very helpful. We would stay here again, though we would make sure to bring our other car which is higher off the ground, and perhaps a can of bear spray. Amazing restaurants all around, hikes a bit of a drive.
This small house is in a great location for checking out all that the Asheville area has to offer. Don't miss out on the many breweries in the area; my favorites were Highland Brewery and Sierra Nevada, both have live music. The house is near Merrimon Avenue, which has a Trader Joe, Whole Foods, and Harris Teeter (great salad bar). There are all kinds of great places along that street. The house's kitchen has been updated, and the shower is great, with plenty of hot water. The small washer/dryer came in handy for my month's stay. The heating/air conditioning worked perfectly. The main bed was comfortable. The host was a pleasure to deal with. The only challenge with the house is the driveway (steep and narrow); can't be helped due to the layout of the property. Overall, I greatly enjoyed my stay.
This is our 4th trip to this charming house. We come so often because we love Asheville and the area. The house and area are very pet friendly, always immaculate, and an easy booking process. The house has been repainted and some decorating updates......not needed but shows how Richard cares for his guests. Yep......We have booked again for next year!!!
Lovely home in a beautiful neighborhood, close to downtown Asheville
The home has a nice balance of tranquility of the neighborhood and closeness to all the action of downtown Asheville. It is located in a quiet and beautiful part of Asheville. Close to Trader Joes and other grocery stores. The cottage itself is adorable. And fully-stocked with everything we needed. The kitchen is modern with a nice open floorplan. Cute back patio and front yard. Owners are very helpful and friendly. Loved everything about it! Its much prettier in person. I hope to stay again at this property.
My husband and I just spent a very pleasant 3 weeks at this well-equipped cottage just north of downtown Asheville. It is not large, but laid out well with 2 bedrooms and an open LR/Kitchen. The kitchen was well stocked and we cooked often during our stay. The house is conveniently located within walking distance of Trader Joe's, Harris Teeter and downtown Asheville. There were many places to walk a dog in the area and other nearby historic neighborhoods. We enjoyed our stay in Asheville and highly recommend this location and it's friendly and helpful owners.
The property was beautiful inside and out! It’s right in the middle of everything but also tucked away and quiet for privacy. I was able to walk everywhere and the neighborhood is so delightful. The beds were off the hook comfortable and everything was very child and pet friendly. I had family and friends come and stay with me for Christmas and New Years, it was so special. The property is mostly fenced in so I was able to let my little doggie out and run free. He loved it!! The shower and bath were so great. A great place to stay for long or short visits. Perfect for small families with pet!!! Richard is lovely and so available if you need him. Plenty of cooking and baking supplies so if your a baker you will defiantly appreciate this . Enjoy!!!! You will love it here. 💜💜💜
Sincerely,
Regina P.
