About this property
Peaceful, cozy one-bedroom waterfront carriage house steps from our private cove
The Fish House built in 2009, is an architect designed, waterfront carriage house in mid-coast Maine, an hour and a half north of Portland. We have easy access to much of the state and are only 9 miles from Rockland, with it's award-winning restaurants, museums and the sightseeing opportunities nearby. Camden and it's treasures are just a 15 minute ride beyond Rockland. Our property is part of a private homeowners association with tennis courts, deep-water dock and miles of safe gravel roads and hiking trails, all available to residents and guests. There is only one house barely visible from ours and nature abounds with a variety of wildlife including bald eagles, great blue herons, egrets, osprey, foxes and seals. Each summer we have seals playing for several weeks just off our property! We are fortunate to have 3 1/2 acres of fir and spruce trees, as well as blueberry, vegetable and flowering gardens. Being sited next to a conservation area on one side, with 350 feet of our own shorefront on two sides, we feel like we live in paradise - and we welcome you to join us!
From the little covered patio, the Fish House opens to an inviting entryway, which leads to a flight of stairs and the main living space. Designed for two adults to spend weeks at a time, you will be greeted by a wall of windows overlooking much of the property, Horn Barn Cove and Muscongus Bay just beyond. There is a separate, cozy bedroom with large closets and storage, a full bathroom with gleaming white tub and luxury bed and bath linens. With comfortable, high-end furniture our guests can sit and relax, prepare a meal in the well-equipped kitchen and dine indoors - or outside at the picnic table. Our shorefront is a short walk through our yard and down a little path to the granite-lined coast where you can wade and look for treasures or just sit, relax and listen to the water lap against the rocks. For swimming and kayaking, our association dock with kayak ramp is just at the end of the street. There are miles of safe roads on which to bike, both in our immediate area and throughout the mid coast. For a real treat, upon return from your adventures you can make use of our heated, outdoor shower!
Whether you’re looking for total peace and quiet or prefer an active vacation, there are lots of options in our area. While some of our guests have come and never left the property for days at a time, Rockland and Camden are just 9 and 18 miles away respectively. Both have supermarkets, specialty food stores and the big box options just ten minutes away is the well-stocked, old-school market. Ten minutes away is a lobster pound, where you can purchase lobsters fresh caught that day and there are numerous casual seafood restaurants nearby. This area is also home to several of the highest ranked restaurants in the Northeast. Numerous other notable attractions include the well-known Farnsworth Art Museum, the Olsen House depicted in one of Andrew Wyeth’s most famous paintings and the breathtaking views from the top of Mr. Battie in Camden. To the north, Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor can be a day trip adventure. From Portland, with its vibrant restaurant and arts scene, numerous other scenic coastal towns are fun to explore. We keep an updated collection of various activities and day excursions and encourage our guests to add to it.
Maine is known for the quality of light here, which affords unbelievable sunsets... and the lack of ambient light in this area yields a night sky with stars and planets so brightly visible that the night sky, alone, is worth the trip. Mid- coast Maine has long been home to – or a destination for - artists and writers for many decades and the scenery is truly inspirational. Once we experienced the coast of Maine, we knew this area is special and all of our guests have agreed. Please feel free to contact us for additional information...

Bill and I lived and worked most of our lives in Fairfield County, Connecticut, raising our three children. While we lived in the woods, we headed for the coast every chance we had, in Connecticut, Rhode Island, or ultimately Maine. We've had a series of sailboats and Bill loves to fish for stripers - thus the "Fish House". After vacationing in Maine for twenty years, when planning our retirement, there was no question as to where we wanted to be - and after finding our incredible property in this wonderful neighborhood, Cushing, Maine, became our home. We'd love to share it with you!
Why they chose this property
Cushing provides easy access to all of Maine, especially the best of the mid coast. We are a day-trip away from Acadia National Park to the north... and Portland, with the airport and rich cultural amenities, is an easy hour-and-a half to the south. There are endless sightseeing options nearby, as well as fantastic restaurants, museums, and stores. We chose our property because it is 3 1/2 acres of fir and spruce trees bordered on one side by conservation land and on two sides by the salt water, which changes color throughout the day so, we are surrounded by incredible natural beauty as well as peace and quiet. Yet, as part of a homeowner's association on a large parcel of land, we share tennis and pickleball courts as well as deep-water and kayak docks. We built the Fish House and our main home with walls of windows in every room to take advantage of the ever-changing views outside, which eliminates the need for "art" on walls. Some of our guests who have been unaccustomed to "being in the woods", have appreciated our home being nearby the Fish House, and with the living areas and views from our house on the opposite side from the Fish House, everyone has their own privacy. Having hosted well over a hundred travelers over the last 7 years we are well-versed in what our guests enjoy when they visit and we love to share our property with others - whether folks who come to Maine every year or those from far away who come for their first visit. And all fall in love with this wonderful state!!
What makes this property unique
From the Fish House there are vistas clear out to the ocean. While you feel like you're in the trees from the inside, the shore is less than 100 feet away and at high tide, you can hear the water lap against the shore. Our guests love to sit in the silence of the tree-covered woods next to the Fish House, wander the shore and the trail throughout our property and relax in any of the adirondack chairs scattered about. And everyone loves the outdoor shower!
