Austen is a dog-friendly cabin for families and friend groups in Hocking Hills, Ohio. It sleeps 6 with two king beds and a twin-over-full bunk room, plus a hot tub under the covered lower deck, a wood-burning fire pit, and a propane grill. It sits on Notestone Reserve, our family-owned 14-acre property in Laurelville, about 7 minutes from Rock House and 20 minutes from Old Man's Cave.

Quick Facts

• Sleeps 6: loft king, main floor twin-over-full bunk room, lower level king

• 2 full bathrooms with showers, one on each level

• Hot tub under the covered lower deck, fire pit with firewood provided, propane grill

The main floor is open, so whoever's cooking is still part of the conversation. Kids usually claim the woodland bunk room the minute they walk in. The lower level gives everyone somewhere else to be when they need it, and the covered deck is where most evenings end up.

Named for Jane Austen, who knew the best stories happen when the right people end up in the same room. It's one of four cabins at Notestone Reserve.

• Basic pantry items to get you started

• Starter supplies: paper towels, a sponge, and trash liners. Pack a little extra for longer stays.

• Cantwell Cliffs: about 8 miles, 15 min

• Conkle's Hollow: 8.8 miles, 15 min

• Old Man's Cave: 11 miles, 20 min

• Ash Cave: 16 miles, 28 min

Cell signal on the back-country roads can be spotty, so download directions before you leave home.

Austen has a steeper approach than the other cabins. Most vehicles handle it fine under normal conditions, but in winter, when ice and snow are a factor, we strongly recommend 4WD or AWD.

About the WiFi

We run Starlink. It handles streaming, music, and browsing well. Video calls can drop now and then, especially on overcast days. Remote work is doable with the occasional hiccup. We'd rather tell you now than have you find out mid-Zoom.

The Setting

We're in the woods and keep up with regular pest control. A ladybug or a curious spider is just Hocking Hills being Hocking Hills.

House Rules

• No parties or events, including bachelor/bachelorette groups. And no glitter. It genuinely never goes away.

• Registered guests only on the property

• No smoking or vaping anywhere on the property, indoors or out

• No fireworks, ATVs, hunting, or weapons on the property

• No commercial photography or video without written approval

• Hot tub: striped towels only, keep the cover on between soaks, and please don't set the temperature below 100 degrees. It takes several hours to recover.

• Septic system: flush toilet paper only, no garbage disposal at the sink

All guests sign a short renter's agreement after booking. We'll send it over. It's quick, painless, and helps us take good care of you and everyone else on the property.

We absolutely loved our stay! The cabin was clean, comfortable, and dog-friendly, which was a huge plus for us. Check-in was easy, and communication was great. When we were running low on firewood, they responded quickly and had more delivered right away. The cabin had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. We would definitely stay here again!

We had a wonderful stay which included our teenage grandchildren. When we first arrived, my grandson walked around, checked out the house, claimed the loft bed as his, and then gave me a hug and said “thanks for bringing us here!”The house is clean and fresh. We spent a lot of time in the evening on the deck just relaxing in the trees. The kids loved the game room just a short walk up the hill. And in the later part of the night we enjoyed the hot tub and fire pit too. Everything is well organized, in good repair and easy to use. The location is great too. One day we went ATV riding and the next we toured some Amish shops. A perfect getaway!!

A weekend at The Austen was perfect for our family

Our family of 5 (3 college age children) enjoyed a relaxing weekend at the Austen. We were able to sit on the deck or patio, enjoy conversations in the hot tub, play games, and enjoy nature (views, birds, deer, rain showers, etc). The cabin is well thought out for everything you could need, even for a family of young children. Plenty of bedding, seating, and extra blankets for indoors and outdoors. We will definitely be back!!

Perfection! Cabin, Reserve, Location

We had an incredible stay at this cabin and couldn’t have asked for a better setup for our family of five. Traveling with three kids can be tricky, but this place was absolutely perfect for us, spacious, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed so everyone had room to relax and enjoy. The interior is beautifully done in a mid-modern style that feels both cozy and elevated. Everything was spotless and incredibly well-appointed. From great coffee and a fully stocked kitchen to all the toiletries you could possibly need, it truly felt like nothing was overlooked. We never once had to say, “I wish they had thought of this”, because they had. The hot tub was a huge highlight for all of us. Soaking while taking in the stunning views was pure relaxation, and those views alone are worth the stay. Morning coffee and evening downtime were equally magical. We also have to give special recognition to the barn, what an amazing bonus. The kids (and adults!) had a blast with the video games and pool table, and it quickly became a favorite family hangout. It added so much fun and made our time together even more memorable. The hosts were fantastic from start to finish responsive, friendly, and incredibly easy to work with. Communication was quick and clear anytime we had a question, which made the entire experience seamless and stress-free. We truly can’t wait to come back. This was one of those stays that leaves you already planning the next visit and next time, we’re absolutely trying the mirrored cabins. Highly recommend!

Property is beautiful. Spiral staircase is a bit challenging for mature guests. Owners could add some sort of tread to metal steps to ensure safety. Hot tub and fire pit were great. Community game room and playground were so special for our family. Good locale. Good WiFi.

Host profile image
Hi, I'm Stacey — one of the founders of Notestone Reserve, and the person who's been hands-on in shaping every space on the property. Restoration is something I think about a lot. The idea that something with potential can become something worth keeping — that broken pieces, arranged with care, can turn into something magnificent. Stained glass works that way. So does Notestone. This property started as a vision and a lot of hard work. What it is now — ten units across 14 acres in the heart of Hocking Hills, each one named for a writer who paid attention to the world around them — is the result of believing that where you rest matters. Every detail reflects what I personally look for when I travel: comfort without pretense, nature without roughing it. The bedding, the hot tubs, the fire pits, the game room — which sounds shared until you realize that most nights it belongs entirely to your group anyway. The kind of place where your own story gets written. I'm proud of what we've built. And I'd love to have you here. Welcome to Notestone Reserve.

What makes this property unique

Austen sleeps six and keeps the group together: an open main floor, a woodland bunk room for the kids, two king beds, and a lower level with its own arcade machine and 65" TV. The covered hot tub and fire pit take care of the evenings. As a Notestone Reserve guest you also get the shared game room: pool table, basketball arcade, classic arcade machines, board games, and a big-screen TV lounge. Most nights it's all yours. Notestone Reserve is in Laurelville, in Hocking Hills. Old Man's Cave, Ash Cave, and Conkle's Hollow are all within 30 minutes. Most groups hike in the morning and are back at the fire pit by dinner.
