Why is Roanoke called Star City? Roanoke, Virginia, earned the nickname "Star City of the South" due to the iconic Mill Mountain Star. The star, built in 1949, is a large illuminated structure on Mill Mountain, intended as a seasonal Christmas decoration, but it became so popular that it's illuminated every night. The star is now a symbol of the city and a major tourist attraction, contributing to Roanoke's distinctive identity. Please make time to visit the star on your visit! Its a 10 minute drive or a 1.7 mile hike up Star Trail.
Guest access
We will provide check-in and a door code prior to your arrival date.
