This renter checked in to our condo on 7/2/2026. They contacted me at 8:23 PM that same day that the bathroom sink was clogged. I contacted the plumber the very next morning, but they couldn't come out until after the holiday. I told this to the renters and they sent me a message back telling me that it did drain and that it was just slow. They also told me not to worry about the sink that if necessary they would use the kitchen and for me to have a good holiday. At 10:47 PM on 7/5/2026 I received a message from the renters that there was no hot water. This was late Sunday night on a holiday weekend. I told them that I would contact the condo board so that they could get a plumber. The hot water heater provides hot water to all 10 units in our building, we do not have individual hot water heaters. The condo board had a plumber onsite at 12 PM Monday. The plumber replaced 2 parts and said that it would take several hours to heat up. The water only reached a luke warm temperature, so the next day the condo board had the plumber come out again and another part was replaced and then there was hot water. During this time the renter was blowing up our phone, messaging via VRBO and calling VRBO. We responded timely to all messages and calls from the renters and VRBO. The renters told me that they had checked around in OC and that there were plenty of places that they could go to. I told them that was fine if that is what they wanted to do I told them if they didn't want to do that I would pay for them to get a room at the hotel next door so that their family could take hot showers and that I would refund them a substantial portion of their rent. They called back and decided on my offer because they said that they really liked our condo and the location was perfect. I paid for the room at the hotel, they all got showers and the next day, I received a message thanking me for providing the hotel room so that they could shower and how nice it was. There was nothing negative said about the hotel at that time. These renters had a choice. They stayed in my condo for 4 nights prior to the hot water heater debacle and they chose to stay after that. They did not have to stay, they had a choice and now they want that choice and more money. I have given them half of what I received from VRBO, There are ten units in our building and this was the only renter who had a lack of understanding that these things just happen. On another note, I was out of town this past week and yes, my mother was watching over our property. She is of sound mind and has business savvy and we share responsibilities for the condo on a regular basis. This is not a matter of trust and the renters could not have had better communication with us, we were very prompt in responding to their numerous inquiries.
