About the host
Hosted by Rylie Barnes
We are Tamra Bevill and Rylie Bevill Barnes. We are a mother-daughter pair who had a dream and took a leap of faith to make it happen! Our dream began years ago, but remained only suppertime conversations until early 2025 when we finally held our breath and purchased The River House together. The task was daunting–our beautiful house needed some “un-flipping.” We wanted to bring back the retro, vintage charm of its early days. So, we had the gray flooring removed and replaced it with old-wood hardwood floors to bring back the warmth the house would have originally had. We toyed with the idea of installing linoleum flooring in the bathrooms and utility room, in an effort to recreate the 70s “feel” that so many of us remember. We saw the mix-and-match sunset colored tile at a local flooring store and fell in love! Its durability and color were the perfect pairing for our wood floors. While some may have ripped out the original paneling, we opted to breathe new life into it. The paneled walls had been painted already, sans one bedroom, so we utilized the local hardware store’s paint section and found the ideal white color to paint throughout, which helped allow more natural light flow throughout the house. One bedroom remained with the original paneling untouched, and we couldn’t bring ourselves to paint it! We wanted our guests to remember the cozy charm of paneled walls from our childhoods. The bathrooms were small, but we had big plans! We color drenched the bathrooms in a retro orange and added brass towel hooks to enhance the retro vibe we were after. The sunroom was easy–it already had panoramic views of the river. We just needed to add a pop of orange and yellow which people can’t help but smile when they see it. The kitchen and utility room still sported the original cabinets and countertops and guests love them as much as we do! The warmth of the wood cabinetry and the green from the countertops screams 1970s–and we love it!
