Here in Westerholt, you’ll find ideal conditions for a beautiful and very relaxing East Frisian holiday. Wide-open countryside, lush meadows, and fields surrounding our village offer unobstructed views and fresh air on wonderful walks and bike rides—all at a safe distance from the tourist hustle and bustle of the North Sea resorts and sluice towns! And we’ll even let you in on the quieter spots right along the dike and the North Sea.
Westerholt is centrally located with excellent access to all attractions in East Frisia. For example, in the summer, locals here love to go swimming in Tannenhausen, a large, very sheltered inland body of water with a beach.
It’s not far to the North Sea coast—and thus to the dike, tourist facilities, and health resorts—such as the two North Sea spa towns of Esens-Bensersiel and Neuharlingersiel, or the North Sea resort of Dornumersiel. Especially by bike, you can explore the area wonderfully from here!
By bike, you have—quite literally—the healthiest route across the countryside to the North Sea, the coastal resorts, or the dike. Our location is ideal for walks, bike rides, and all kinds of adventures in the unique and diverse natural landscape of East Frisia. Enjoy an active yet relaxing holiday by the North Sea and make the most of the North Sea’s invigorating climate.
The nearby North Sea spa town of Esens-Bensersiel has plenty to offer for sports, relaxation, and recreation—for example, in Bensersiel, the Nordseetherme Bensersiel with its sauna area, wellness offerings, and many other recreational attractions, the seawater outdoor pool, tennis courts, and a maritime sports theme park; surfing spots along the dike; fitness facilities; beach volleyball; fishing opportunities; and, of course, the very child-friendly beach—plus much more. You and your children should definitely visit the “Klabautermann” indoor play park in Esens—you’re sure to have a great time there. “Klabautermann” is a large hall full of ideas for playing and running around.
Also nearby is the North Sea spa town of Neuharlingersiel. Neuharlingersiel is a 300-year-old fishing village with an active fleet of crab fishing boats. In the beautiful historic fishing harbour, East Frisian fishing is still actively practised today by many shrimp boats.
Neuharlingersiel also offers a wide range of tourist attractions for your holiday: A beach with the fantastic “Platschi” water play area, the new, modern “BadeWerk” spa and wellness centre with a seawater indoor pool and sauna facilities, as well as a spa house, a ballroom, an information centre with the “Leuchttürmchen” children’s playhouse, the Sielhof as the “Haus des Gastes,” green spaces, events, a lovingly maintained historic harbour, and much more.
Dornumersiel, with its beach and seawater swimming pool, is also well worth a visit: Dornumersiel has been a North Sea resort since 1990 and boasts a very large sandy beach. This Siel town is one of the oldest ports on the East Frisian coast.
Dornumersiel invites you to take an idyllic stroll along the “Mahlbusen.” Dornumersiel also features a solar-heated North Sea outdoor pool and all the amenities you need for your spa stay. At the “Reethaus am Meer,” which features a play barn, you’ll find a reading room with a library, a fireplace lounge, table tennis, craft and workshop rooms, as well as seminar and lecture rooms.
