A 350-year-old sandstone house with a beautiful view of the valley, an inner courtyard, and a terrace

Our large natural-stone house, built in 1635, has four bedrooms and sleeps 8 people. There is an additional double bed in an open-concept room without a partition, so the house can accommodate up to 10 people. If you’d like to rent the house for 2–4 people, please ask me for a lower rate. The bright kitchen-dining area, with direct access to the terrace, is fully equipped with a new gas stove (electric oven), a large refrigerator (3-star), dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, grill, etc. The spacious living room features an open fireplace, a seating area with a couch, a large dining table, and direct access to the terrace. From the large terrace (covered by a sunshade), you have a sweeping view of the valley and the village of Sanilhac across the way, with its church and a good auberge. The courtyard, surrounded by a natural stone wall, is perfect for undisturbed sunbathing and relaxation; an outdoor shower is available. Particularly suitable for families with children and nature lovers looking to unwind from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. There is also a smaller natural-stone house (80 square metres) on the property that is available for rent; each house has its own terraces and portion of the garden, though the property is not separated by fences.

Please note! Guests must bring their own bed linens and towels for both houses. Since the two houses are on the same property, they are also well-suited for booking by two families who are friends.

Surroundings: Those who love peaceful, unspoiled nature will feel right at home in Sanilhac. Even in the height of summer, there’s no hustle and bustle here; spring (starting in May) and fall (through mid-November) are especially recommended. The area is particularly well-suited for hiking, biking on small, quiet roads, boating, and swimming in the countless clear rivers. The Ardèche region exudes a charm all its own thanks to its many ancient villages with their characteristic natural-stone houses. Many small cafés and boules courts invite you to linger and relax. There are several beautiful spots for swimming along the rivers, such as the Beaume (about 7 km away) and the Ardèche (closest to Balazuc). A highlight of the region is the museum that opened in 2015: Caverne du Pont d’Arc, a faithful replica of the Chauvet Cave discovered near Vallon with its stunning cave paintings—absolutely worth seeing!
Sports options include canoeing, rafting, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, rock climbing, and a high ropes course… everything you can do in this stunning landscape. In the village itself, there is a good and well-known “Auberge de la Tour de Brison” as well as a weekly market that takes place on Sundays in the summer. For shopping, you’ll need to go to Largentière (8 km) or Joyeuse, both of which have weekly markets and supermarkets. In Aubenas, there are several large supermarket chains.

Getting There: Most visitors coming from the north reach southern France via Lyon and the Autoroute du Soleil. Take either the “Privas” or “Montélimar Nord” exit to reach Aubenas, the nearest larger town, which is about 26 km from Sanilhac. From Aubenas, take the highway south towards Ales. After about 18 km, turn right at the roundabout towards Largentiere. Just before Largentiere, a sign points left towards Sanilhac, which you’ll reach after about 8 km via the village of Montreal.
