About this property

1865 farmhouse near Lake Gaston!

THE FARMHOUSE IS NOT ON LAKE GASTON, BUT IT'S ONLY A MILE AWAY.
The Isle of Rest was once a 4,000 acre working farm originally built around 1810. The main house burned down after being struck by lightening and the current home was completed in 1865. The property was divided into two parcels by the family in the mid 1920's. Most of the land was sold to developers in the 1950's when Lake Gaston was formed by damming the Roanoke River. The homestead was lived in until 1973 when the matriarch of the family passed away. Her heirs allowed the land to sit for thirty years and fall into disrepair. I purchased the homestead and 25 acres in 2005 and set off to restore the grand old house. My family and I use it as a weekend getaway throughout the year and stay for a week several times during the summer. We put the boat in down the street at Holly Creek Marina, shoot skeet, take nature walks, enjoy the deer and other wildlife, and just relax. We recently decided to try renting the house out to help with the expenses and to share the wonderful setting with others. If you are a nature lover, reader, writer, boater, hunter or all the above you will really enjoy staying at the Isle of Rest. We have allowed two weddings and two business retreats to use the property and everyone loved it. Events, like a wedding, will be charged the weekly rate regardless of number of days on the property.

I live in Chapel Hill, NC about a one hour drive to the farmhouse, as we call it. I own a small real estate company and have been married for ten years. I have two adorable daughters (5 & 8) and two great dogs. We all love going to the farm house.

Why they chose this property

I always wanted a farmhouse since I grew up in the city. When I stumbled over this property years ago I simply fell in love with it. Even though it had been neglected I saw the potential in the 140 year old buildings. I was single at the time, so I spent weekends and vacations cleaning up the land and renovating the main house and out buildings. It's been a love affair ever since I drove down the 300 yard driveway.

What makes this property unique

I doubt there is another home like this one that is open for rental. It's a unique experience to stay in a property with such history and beauty. All of the woodwork in the house, except in the kitchen, is original to 1865. There are six fireplaces in the main house (four working). The office (once a doctor's office and the plantation office) is now a game room with a pool table and 80's arcade game and it's own wood stove, but no plumbing. The pond is stocked with bass and we have our duck friends paddling around. Blackberries, figs and other fruits grow in summer and are there for the picking.
