A free shuttle bus runs during the summer months for exploring the island, and you can also take a boat to see Fort Boyard.

If you're staying a little longer, you can visit Royan and La Palmyre Zoo, the charming town of Cognac, La Rochelle, and Île de Ré—all about an hour away by car.
