My wife and I have stayed at numerous time shares on the Hamakua Coast and this one is now our favorite. The home is spacious and comfortable and the views are out of this world. Highly recommend this property.
The property was positioned high enough that you could see a large amount of the coastline. The unit had everything we needed in the kitchen and other rooms to make our stay very nice.
We enjoyed our stay at this home about 12 mi. North of Hilo.
This property is beautiful, peaceful, and quiet. A good location from which to go to the Botanical Gardens, Akaka Falls, and to take the road north to Waimea. J&M Feb. 2025
We have stayed here a few times in the past. We typically love it. We enjoyed the house and the bbq grill and the sunrises as usual. Krystal was very responsive to any questions we had during our stay. During some extremely rainy days/nights we enjoyed watching some Netflix. When the weather was nice the views were phenomenal. The house is very peaceful.
This was October 2024 and unfortunately there were a few days of some severe rainy weather that was unusual even for the rainy side of the big island.
Could not have asked for a more perfect vacation rental. Very well appointed and accommodating, beautiful view and location, so relaxing and fun. Wonderful hosts too!!
What a great location to get away from it all! We loved feeling like we were in the clouds when the rain set in. We loved the sound of the distant waterfall and stream and our little granddaughter even learned to love the sounds of the croakie frogs at night. Highly recommend this little slice of rural Hawaii.
This was a relaxing place to stay. Great location to get away from the busy city. Lots of space for 4 adults and the beds were very comfortable. The only complaint we have is that cats are roaming the property and like to crawl on vehicle and sleep on it for warmth. We had a rental car and they scratch the paint in several places on the hood. Just pop the hood of the vehicle and that will solve the issue.
We were visiting Hilo for my dad's 80th Birthday celebration and took a mini staycation. While the location is farther out of Hilo than we normally stay, Honomu was perfect. The view was absolutely amazing! The home was nice and clean and more than enough space for the three of us. Gazing up at the stars at night in the jacuzzi was the highlight of our stay. Mahalo for sharing your home with us.
This house was the perfect location for us. We were visiting the Big Island to connect with various family which was a wonderful and busy time. Coming back to this house up in the windward hills provided the perfect contrast to our busy times. The views are beautiful, daytime, morning sunrises, evening sunsets, rain coming in over the ocean, rainbows, night skies filled with stars, more beauty than one could hope for. The 3 bedrooms are very comfortable; the house is furnished quite nicely with Hawaii style decor. Loved it. Kitchen is well stocked with dishes, cooking utensils, even condiments. Hot tub on the porch with view to the open skies. What is not to love. I would come back to this location in a heart beat.
When you visit understand this is not the Ritz but you’re there to be with nature. I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to world and this is the most peaceful place I’ve ever been. The hosts interacted with us when needed and our kids loved the donkeys and waterfall. The stars and sounds at night are like nothing we’ve ever experienced. Thank you to the host and owners for sharing your piece of heaven.
Awesome house and location! The property was exactly as described. Krystle and Alec were great hosts: helpful, but not intrusive. It's ultra-quiet and peaceful, but only 20 minutes from Hilo.
This was our first (and likely only) trip to Hawaii. A family trip celebrating graduations/ anniversary/ birthdays/ Christmas, etc.
We visited Akaka Falls, the Botanical Garden, Hilo, Kona, Puna, the Southernmost Point, VNP, Mauna Kea, Waimea, and other points. The house was a welcome base to come home to at night.
Relaxing in the hot tub, swimming at their own private waterfall (the path isn't for the faint of heart) and enjoying the animals helped make the trip complete.
We looked at many other potential properties when deciding where to stay. After a week of exploring the Big Island, I was happy to say we made the perfect choice. Thank you for a amazing week!

We really enjoyed staying here while in Hilo/Honamu. It's a lovely, comfortable unit with an outstanding view! Quite area, no close neighbors. The caretakers were helpful, but not intrusive and were off site most of the time. We would happily come back again!
My husband and I spent 3 marvelous weeks at the Akaka Farm home! We felt so comfortable with the well-appointed kitchen, spacious living room, a lanai and a deck. Spectacular starry nights in the hot tub; ocean and pastoral views; walks to Akaka Falls and easy trips to Hilo and Honokaa. Make sure you check out the delicious food at The Hive in Honomu and the Hakalau Farmer’s Market to eat the most delicious Thai food!
The owner Andrea and the caretaker Krystle were responsive and helpful. (An extra bonus for me was Asscot the donkey and ‘his’ four sheep and the caretakers’ cats!) A great get-away!
They Akaka Farm is a magical place! We absolutely loved everything about our stay. Andrea, Alec and Krystle are kind and generous and responsive. Thank you thank you and we hope to be back soon!
This property sits on 14 acres atop a hill overlooking the ocean in Honomu! Absolutely spectacular! Andrea and Krystal were a delight and allowed us to check in early. The house is charming with three bedrooms and two bathrooms and has everything you can imagine your own house would have. Every morning was a gorgeous sunrise and sunsets at night. There are even resident goats, sheep and a donkey! I highly recommend this house for your vacation rental! It is only a twenty minute ride to Hilo. We will definitely rent this house again for another sistercation! Mahalo nui Loa!
Great views, restful, great location, stocked with all we need
This was our 3rd time staying at the property. The location on top of a mountain allows for 360 degrees of breathtaking views. We always enjoy our time at this house. We relax and bbq. We also enjoy the pets on the property - a few cats, a donkey, and a few sheep. The breezes and ceiling fans make the house very comfortable when it’s hot in the sun outside. There are no nearby neighbors so we feel nicely isolated. There are caretakers who stay in the other half of the house who are available if needed but we still feel a sense of privacy.
The wifi and roku work well to keep us connected and entertained.
The location is very close to Honomu’s main st which has bakery, coffee, breakfast and lunch if needed and Hilo is a short drive away which has everything you could want or need.
We loved staying on the East side of the Big Island, and the Akaka Farms house is the place to do it. This was our second visit to this beautiful location. It's far from your "touristy" Kona, more like old Hawaii at it's best. So relaxing!

About the host
Hosted by Andrea Lievens
Jean and Jim Lievens purchased this property in 1991. They first started with the infrastructure and later the farm house on a site which captures quite a view. Jean loves this special area and has decided to share this lovely spot with other travelers and friends. Though the farm is not yet developed, a plan is in place to create a botanical garden. Guests and friends will enjoy watching this verdant land come alive. This property is managed by Brian and Andrea Lievens.
