About this property
Stunning, majestic, oceanfront location, with stunning view and air conditioning
Simply put, this property sits on one of the most gorgeous ocean-front locations in East Hawaii. Unlike other ocean-front homes, you will not need to walk to the end of a yard to appreciate the Pacific waves. Here, you will feel as if you are on a ship. Simply step out onto the deck, look down and there is the Pacific ocean lapping at the shoreline 100 feet below you. We have actually fished off the deck. We believe the quality of this view and proximity to dramatic breaking waves are unique among vacation rentals in East Hawaii. This is particularly so considering it is only a couple of short miles from quaint Hilo town, the seat of Hawaii County. During the whale season, humpbacks will breech and frolic so close to the house that, on occasion, it will seem as if they are putting on a show just for you. Sometimes the cove below is visited by schools of spinner dolphins, which number in the hundreds. At almost anytime, you can look out from the windows or deck and see surfers sliding down the face of silver waves at nearby Honoli'i beach. On most days, a giant cruise ship will sail out of the dawn and past the house in the morning and then past the house again at sunset, as it leaves Hilo Bay, festooned with a thousand glittering lights.
Please know that this is an older style Hawaiian home. If you are seeking luxury, you'll have to look elsewhere. The house is built from Redwood and is a single wall construction home. In other words, wood boards for walls, not the stud variety. Some of the doors are pocket doors as opposed to swing doors. Please don't expect the level of sophistication that you will find at resort properties. This is a simple house, built for a local family back in the 1950s. We have undertaken some modernization but essentially it is the same charming house that was constructed all those years ago.
The house is a 40 minute drive from Volcanoes National Park and a brief three minute drive from Hilo. It is perfectly located for exploring East Hawaii and a spectacular hour and a half drive from the beaches and town of Kona.
Aside from the spectacular view, one of the benefits of staying next to the ocean is the lack of pesky mosquitoes. The ocean breeze, which will keep you cool, also serves to drive most of them away. Unfortunately, the Big Island has been invaded by coqui frogs in recent years, which make a loud (not altogether unpleasant) chirping noise in the evening. Many B&Bs and vacation properties here actually supply their guests with earplugs. Luckily, the ocean breeze also keeps most of the coquis at bay. You will hear some chirping but it is extremely unlikely that you will find the noise too intrusive.
The house has a large kitchen and living room with picture windows overlooking the ocean and across the bay to Hilo Town. There is a master bedroom with a king-sized bed and french doors leading onto the deck and an outdoor shower. The second bedroom has a full and a twin bed. Each of the upstairs bedrooms has a large TV..
The living room features leather furniture and a gas fireplace for those very occasional dips in temperature. We have deliberately not put a TV in the living area as we hope that you will enjoy the spectacular view, uninterrupted by flickering images and perhaps read, chat or partake in some of the family games we have left for you. However, there is double-speed wireless internet connection throughout the house should you need it for your own devices. You will find binoculars for observing the whales, surfers, dolphins, cruise ships, sailboats and Hawaiian outrigger paddlers.
The deck features a large, expandable teak dining table with chairs. It is doubtful that you will want to eat indoors once you have experienced the pleasure of ocean-front dining, although there is an additional dining table in the living room, should you choose to. There is an additional table with all-weather chairs and if you need it, a folding table. Should you wish to entertain, there is ample seating for your guests. For relaxation, there are teak deck-chairs and a comfortable, quilted double hammock in which to swing to the sound of breaking waves. Should you wish, grab a pillow with a blanket and let the hammock rock you to a wonderful night's sleep under the stars.
The large kitchen is full equipped with everything you need for comfort and convenience: extensive granite counter-tops, a double-door stainless steel fridge with water and ice maker, a dishwasher, garbage disposer, a Keurig coffee maker with a complimentary selection of coffees, large microwave, blender, rice-cooker, slow-cooker, toaster and range. There is ample china and silverware for all your dining needs. Should you need them, you will find coolers for taking on your island adventures.
Outside, you will find a kayak, life-vests, boogie boards and snorkeling equipment. Please feel free to use them to enjoy the magnificent Pacific ocean, which undoubtedly will provide you with many happy memories during your stay in Hawaii. You will also find tennis rackets and balls as well as some other beach games to enjoy.
I have noticed that some vacation rental owners claim that their properties are much shorter driving distances to Hilo than is possible. Please bear in mind that any oceanfront property in lower Puna, claiming to be within the Hilo district, is at least a 50 minute drive from town, often a lot more.
I do hope that the house brings as much joy to you as it has to me the years. Please make the most of your visit and please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you need anything whatsoever.

Excellent location for visiting Hilo and the surrounding sites. Million dollar views. Host’s communication was excellent. Did not give five stars due to some cleanliness issues.
Great location, great view, charming house with an "older Hawaii" feel. We saw whales, dolphins, ships sailing by, and surfers catching waves. Oh, and thumbs up on the outdoor shower!
We recently returned from spending a week at this wonderful property. It is within a 5-minute drive to downtown Hilo with its many restaurants and shops. The home is situated at the end of a dead-end street and is very quiet. The home is older but very charming and offers all of the amenities of a newer property. The kitchen was nicely stocked with all you could need. The lanai was wonderful and gave amazing birds eye views of the ocean. However, the table and chairs shown in the photo is no longer there. That view shown is from a small patio area that extends off of the lanai. The lanai has a wonderful table and chairs as well as 2 loungers and sitting out there was quite enjoyable. There is air conditioning and ceiling fans in both of the bedrooms and plenty of oscillating fans provided, if needed. Beach equipment was also available. The owner checked on us a few times during our stay, even offering an idea for an indoor activity in Hilo on a rainy day. Side note - we were at VNP the day of the eruption (43)!!! We would definitely stay at this property again.
Magnificent! This is best stay I have had! The location was great. The view was stunning. The lanai was heavenly. The host provided all that we could have needed and more. Highly recommend!!!
Great host. Extremely helpful and kind. The house is the perfect place with amazing views and wonderful Hawaii vibes. We highly recommend - it was everything we needed and hope we can visit again!
What a gorgeous location to enjoy the ocean, sky, and sounds of the local wildlife! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this peaceful neighborhood. Saul was available to answer our questions and so a gracious host.
Great place to stay while exploring the east side of the Big Island or just hanging out enjoying the views and the sounds of the ocean. Communication with the owner is excellent. Have been here on 3 previous occasions and plan to return again.
We had an amazing time staying in this lovely home. We felt right at at home and the neighborhood was very quiet. I would highly recommend a stay at this extraordinary home!
We so enjoyed our stay here. It is an older home but well maintained, very comfortable bed and an amazing view from the large lanai/covered patio that has to be seen to be believed. The neighborhood is quiet which was perfect for us and the house has a well stocked kitchen.
We will never forget that deck overlooking that Pacific Ocean- high above looking at surfers to the right, waves crashing on the rocks below, and vast open ocean all around. It's all about the view, but the house is nice and comfortable.
My husband and I enjoyed our January stay at this older style house very much. The lanai with its oceanfront view is spectacular and perfect for watching whales and spinner dolphins. We really like the decor as well, and the outdoor shower was a pleasure to use. It is a peaceful, quiet neighborhood which we really appreciated. It's close proximity to Hilo made going to the farmers market a short, easy drive. We highly recommend staying here for those who appreciate nature's beauty and the laid back vibe of Hilo, and we hope to come back here again someday.
Great location with views. Outdoor space was wonderful. Had a very relaxing stay. Owner very responsive to inquiries. Would highly recommend this property.
This is a great property! Ideal location, and Saul has everything ready you could need for excursions on the Big Island! And whales and pelagic birds visible each morning when we were there (beginning of April)!
This is our second stay at Saul’s house. This home is absolutely fantastic! The views and location are perfect! It’s cozy and a great place to relax and unwind! We enjoyed our time on the lanai watching whales and listening to the waves. Cant wait to visit again! Highly recommend!
Very accomodating host; supplied over and beyond what most vrbo hosts do. Saw whales nearly every day! Spacious, wonderful location for exploring this beautiful side of the island. Very relaxing amd no street noise! Generally clean but could use a more thorough, deep cleaning. Very comfortable bed.
We loved this property and its amazing view of the ocean. We loved Hilo - and we loved spending time here at the property, having dinners, watching surfers and the whales.
Saul the owner/manager was welcoming and wanted us to be at home here during our stay.
We plan to come back here on our next visit to Hilo.

Why they chose this property
We couldn't resist this property. As a columnist for the local newspaper, I visited the house in 2004 and, like everyone else who came here, was stunned by the spectacular views. The house came onto the market in 2011 and we snapped it up. Three months later, after extensive remodeling, we moved in. The house is nearly 60 years old and despite a few minor quirky characteristics, has stood the test of time well. We plan to move back in a few years. This house and community are very dear to our hearts.
What makes this property unique
This house is all about the view. The construction itself is typically Hawaiian, being built of Pacific redwood in the single wall construction style. To be sure, if this home were a modern house, there would be a few more polished details and the upkeep would be easier, but we love it the way it is. Being located on a quiet cul-de-sac has meant that our home is part of a small community within a wider community. Our neighbors are kind, friendly and full of the island 'aloha' which comes to all who live here.
