We were thrilled with our “get away” vacation. We have always loved the idea of being at a cabin, relaxing, reading a book, walking around, staring at the water, and the seemingly silly geese as they show up, walk up and then go back after a fine hunt for geese food. Quiet, peaceful, delighted in the layout, the atmosphere of peace. What more could we have asked for?
This property was a peaceful getaway. The sound of the Loons and watching the eagles nest right from the pier was a wonderful. The cabin was super clean and stocked with everything you could possibly need. A real log cabin feel.
We all enjoying our stay at the property from fishing to fire pit to grilling out or simply hanging out at the cabin. We caught fish and saw a couple elk cows. All in all it was great
We had a wonderful time at this property! It is truly a northwoods old-world Wisconsin experience - just what we were looking for. The cabin was clean, quiet, and beautifully decorated. The central air was a nice touch - although we didn't need it! The ample firewood (both indoors and out) was also much appreciated. We would love to return!
This is our third stay in this cabin. It is clean, well equipped, and convenient. The host makes us feel welcome with a lovely note on the kitchen table. The instructions for arriving and departing are clear and concise. It is a beautiful location. We would recommend it to anyone who enjoys the beauty of the north woods.
Very clean and well stocked cabin. There was not a single item that we needed that wasn’t found in a cabinet or a drawer. Plenty of CDs to watch, on the couple of rainy days during our stay. There was a power outlet attached to a tree near the dock to be used to recharge our boat batteries. Enjoyed the porch overlooking the lake. Only time I heard the neighbors is when they cut their grass.
Perfect up north cabin, with a fantastic lake view! We spent 4 days and enjoyed every minute. We spent time kayaking and fishing upper clam lake and nearby day lake. Did well enough to have a bluegill fish fry. We spent a day in Bayfield and toured the apostle islands. It was a quick drive from the cabin. All the local establishments had friendly and helpful staff. We took a drive down nearby Mathey Road and saw 5-6 elk standing next to the road. Overall the vacation was great and the cabin was fantastic. We enjoyed the books that gave the history of the cabin. Great personal touch that brought life and character to this place. Thanks for opening your cabin to us!
My wife and I were looking for a quite place in the Northwoods to spend a few days looking for waterfalls and enjoying the fall colors. For most visitors this cabin probably works just fine. For us there were just a few shortcomings when we returned for the evening. We found the bedding less than fresh and the mattresses uncomfortable. (All of the furniture is pretty dated.) There’s enough WIFI for one user or watching Net Flicks, not both. There are 3 TV channels but they are all PBS.
If these things are not important to you, this cabin has everything else you need and the location is wonderful. In spite of the rain we enjoyed the area.
My wife and I enjoyed staying in this exceptionally well kept cabin. This property is very comfortable and an excellent place for recreating on a beautiful Wisconsin Northwoods lake, rain or shine. Kayaks and safety floation equipment were available (I recommend the kayaks for experience paddlers). After a sunny afternoon paddle, the early June evening sky turned grey and rainy, so instead of a fire in the outside fire ring, we put some provided logs in the fireplace in the three season porch. Just before sunset the clouds broke and we watched the sky glow pink as the sun dropped behind the jack pines across the lake, all from a comfortable couch.
Though we enjoyed being on the lake for a little while, the best part for both of us was to simply read books, cook good food in the well equiped kitchen, and to experience the nature of the area (Do have bug repellent handy as spring and early summer mosquitos are very active, even in the day. The deck features bug repellent torches.) This cabin is great for couples and small families and we look forward to returning.
The cabin is clean and homey. Arrival and departure directions are clear and easy to follow.
The trees were at their peak of color and the weather was perfect.
We enjoyed having our granddaughter with us. We hiked, shopped and explored the area. Last night we saw the northern lights. They were awesome. Thank you Annette and Joel.
The cabin was clean and well equipped. We were welcomed with a handmade greeting card that was so thoughtful. Instructions for opening the cabin were clear and concise and for closing it as well. The neighborhood is quiet. The view across the lake was gorgeous this year. We would gladly recommend this cabin to anyone who wants a comfortable place to stay in the Clam Lake area.
We booked this trip to hopefully see or hear the elk and we saw a herd the first night! The cabin and location was nice and we really enjoyed the books they had regarding the history of the property.
From the moment we arrived at Cabin Hovestol, we felt right at home. We were even welcomed by an elk bugling in the distance nearby. We have been going on vacations in the woods for over 40 years and have never encountered a cleaner, more comfortable and more value added property than this one. The owner was congenial and responsive. The kitchen was bright, airy and well equipped and we enjoyed several meals at the charming old dining room table with a view of the lake. The bed was very comfortable and we could have left our pillows at home. The cabin was tastefully decorated, uncluttered and a good use of space. It was fascinating reading about the Hovestol family and history of the cabin. We sampled some of the area establishments, such as the Bierstube for drinks, sandwiches and a fantastic view at Garmisch Resort on Lake Namakagon, watched the Packer game at Ransom’s in Clam Lake and shopped in Hayward on a rainy day. We would have liked to try the pizza or broasted chicken at the newly renovated Chippewa Outpost in Clam Lake but ran out of time. We fished for bluegills and crappies, photographed a flock of swans, searched for elk and enjoyed a fire in the wood stove on those chilly fall days. All in all, everything about Cabin Hovestol far exceeded our expectations. We wanted for nothing and considered it a privilege to stay here.
Enjoyed the view of the lake during our meals, sunsets by the fire, kayaking, my grandson enjoyed hours in the hammock. It is a very peaceful cabin, nicely decorated. I hope to return sometime. My grandson and I had a hard time leaving, we loved our stay.
Friday night fish fry at Garmish was the best we had in a very long time, the Old Fashions where pretty good too :)
Beautiful and peaceful getaway. Everything was just as described. I had a friend one time in Austin TX that told me to stop telling everyone about this Fantastic taco place we had "discovered". And sure enough, within 2-3 years it went from a walk-up joint to a large restaurant with a 2 hour wait for seating. And in that spirit, there's a selfish part of me that hates leaving this review but I cannot do that to such gracious hosts. From the swans, the elk, the loon to the cabin and lake itself-simply Perfection. Fishing? Yes, we fished and did very well. But fisher friends-you'll have to mind your own bobber on that one. I will say this Texas gal out-fished a Northern guy so there is that. Reserve with confidence. We look forward to returning and are extremely grateful to Joel & Annette. We miss it already!
This cute little cabin has everything you need for comfort and entertainment. The beds felt just like home , the kitchen had more than adequate cookware, bakeware and dishes of all sizes. The walls were tastefully decorated with family pictures, artwork and ethnic pieces. I could go on and on! We loved it and felt very much at home. The welcome card was a very nice touch.
My dad and I stayed for 4 nights while in the area hunting. It was a perfect place for the two of us. Clean, accurate description, and the owners were VERY accommodating and friendly. Beautiful sunsets from the deck. We’ll be back!
My husband & I had the best time staying here - gave us the r&r we needed and there is so much to do in the general area! Neighbors were nice & the owners were a dream to work with!
We had an absolutely amazing family vacation that will we remember forever! The cabin was clean, cute, and perfect for our family. It had everything we needed. The row boat, kayaks, grill, raft, indoor and outdoor fire and firewood, beach area, and yard games were all special "extras" that added additional fun memories. Communication was great and check-in and check-out were flawless. We could not have asked for a better experience. Thank you so much for offering your special cabin to our family so we could create memories that will last a lifetime!
My family (both extended and immediate) have been to this property multiple times. The old adage "don't mess with a good thing" couldn't be more appropriate. The Hovestol family takes immense pride in this property. Spend one visit there and you'll understand why. This is an honest to goodness "Wisconsin cabin on a lake" that has been well maintained and updated consistently over the years. The end result is the quintessential cabin feel but with many of the modern amenities we take for granted in modern homes. It should also be mentioned that this cabin is routinely cleaned from the top down which immediately sets the tone of relaxation when you first walk in.
Amenities and cleanliness aside, the most important thing this cabin provides are memories. It's easy to focus on your family when your biggest questions for the day are: Who's going to catch the most blue gill? Should we walk 1 mile into town to browse the gift shop/convenience store? Do we feel like relaxing road biking or thrilling gravel forest road biking or both? Should we grill or make campfire pudgie pies for dinner? I wonder how many eagles fit in that nest? This list goes on and on...
Regardless of the questions of the day, when you watch the sunset over a 5 year old who's mastered casting on her own, you realize you've made the right choices.
Next summer can't come soon enough...
This cabin exceeded our expectations. It was very clean, beautifully appointed, quiet, and convenient for putting our kayaks into the water for fishing. The communication with the hosts was perfect, and the instructions they left for us were clear and easy to follow. We enjoyed our stay very much, and we expect to return next summer if we can!
