About Malta

Megaliths, medieval dungeons and Calypso's Cave – The Maltese Islands are positively mythic. The narrow meandering streets of their towns and villages lead to the main square, which is invariably dominated by the huge baroque church. As the countryside is dotted with medieval towers, wayside chapels and the oldest known human structures in the world, the Islands have rightly been described as an open-air museum.

The Maltese archipelago lies virtually at the centre of the Mediterranean, 93 km south of Sicily and 288 km north of Africa. The archipelago consists of three islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino with a total population of over 400,000 inhabitants occupying an area of 316 square kilometers.

Malta is the largest island and the cultural, commercial and administrative centre. Gozo is the second largest island and is more rural, characterised by fishing, tourism, crafts and agriculture. Comino, the smallest of the trio, has one hotel and is largely uninhabited.

With superbly sunny weather, attractive beaches, a thriving nightlife and 7,000 years of intriguing history, there is a great deal to see and do.

The Hypogeums

The Hypogeum, or underground cavity, is a unique monument and superb example of architecture in the negative. Excavation has yielded a wealth of archaeological material including pottery, human bones, personal ornaments such as beads and amulets, little carved animals and larger figurines.

The Hypogeum consists of halls, chambers and passages hewn out of the living rock and covering some 500 square metres. The rock-cut chambers are of diverse shapes and sizes, finished to different standards of workmanship. The complex is grouped in three levels – the upper level (3600-3300 BC), the middle level (3300-3000 BC) and the lower level (3150 -2500 BC). The deepest room in the lower level is 10.6 metres under road surface. The upper level consists of a large hollow with a central passage and burial chambers cut on each side. The middle level consists of various chambers very smoothly finished, which give the impression of built masonry.

Comino

Situated between Malta and Gozo, the smaller island of Comino is a paradise for snorkelers, divers, windsurfers and ramblers.

Only 3.5 square kilometers, Comino is car-free and apart from one hotel, is virtually uninhabited.

The island's main attraction is the Blue Lagoon. In summer, this sheltered inlet of shimmering aquamarine water over white sand is very popular with day-trippers. Other beaches on the island include Santa Marija Bay and San Niklaw Bay.

Comino is also worth a visit in winter, and is ideal for walkers and photographers. With no urban areas or cars on the island, one can easily smell the scent of wild thyme and other herbs.

I am Sandra a warm and caring person that appreciates old homes that are traditional to the Maltese islands.I enjoy living in the village centre of Zejtun for its people who are also warm and caring, with a friendly heart.

Why they chose this property

The home is 250 years old, which has been extensively revamped with modern fixtures, it enjoys very private and peaceful surroundings. It now has Wi-Fi included. All the bedrooms are spacious and all are fitted with air-conditioning. The large yard has been transformed into a delightful and relaxing pool and sun deck area. A modern, gas type barbecue and a 8 seater outdoor dinning table complements the area. From the roof top, which is also accessible, on can see the surrounding village and distant views of the island.

Malta offers a varied mix of such properties, ranging from traditional ones dating to the 17th and 18th century, to new ones being built reflecting today’s trends. Malta also offers its good dose of farmhouses, and its case houses of character, particularly in the smaller villages, such as Naxxar, Zurrieq, Zejtun, Qrendi, Mosta and the surrounding areas.

This property is situated around the village core or elsewhere on the outskirts of the villages, farmhouses and houses of character offer unparalleled tranquillity, secluded from urban areas, yet within easy reach of all amenities.

heir innate beauty, and most importantly uniqueness makes such residences a very sought after property option, particularly as an investment. The limited supply and growing demand ensures that the price of the property not only holds, but offers steady capital appreciation.

What makes this property unique

The Locality

Żejtun (also called Iż-Żejtun) is a medium sized town in the south of Malta. Żejtun holds the title of Città Beland, which was bestowed by Ferdinand von Hompesch zu Bolheim, Grandmaster of Knights of Malta in 1797, Beland being his mother’s surname.

Żejtun takes its name from the Sicilian Arabic for "olive"- zaytun (comparable to the Spanish and Portuguese, "aceituna" and "azeituna" respectively), which was one of the main productive industries in Malta.

Żejtun, lying in the south-eastern part of Malta, covers the top of a hill that dominates the bays of Marsaxlokk, St. Thomas Bay and Marsaskala, popular ports of call for all Mediterranean sailor since Phoenician times. They also provided convenient landing beaches for invaders.

The origins of Żejtun go back to Phoenician and Roman times. Orginally Żejtun, known as Terra Santa Catarina, covered the whole south eastern part of the island extending to the outskirts of the walls protecting Cottonera and included Żabbar, Marsaskala, Marsaxlokk and St. George's Bay. The inhabitants of Żejtun proper till 1680 formed two separate communities huddled in residences protected by narrow streets (which of themselves provided protection) known as Bisqallin referred to till today as the Lower Village (Ir-Raħal t’Isfel) and Ħal Ġwann and Ħal Bisbut, known today as the Upper Village (Ir-Raħal ta’ Fuq). Development during the eighteenth century and the construction of the new parish church in between the two communities formed the present centre and linked the two to form one community.

In the old days, the residents were sentinels against invasions which landed in the southern bays of the island. Because of this and the fact that they were furthest from Medina, the old capital, they developed an independent self-reliant spirit, often lauded in in their impromptu folk singing (għana), still prevalent today. The separate communities in the lower village and the upper village.
