AREA DESCRIPTION: Viareggio is a city on the Northern Coast of Tuscany in the perfect position for those who wish to spend their holiday lounging on the beach, exploring a modern yet historic Italian coastal city or taking day trips to the numerous small towns nestled in the Tuscany countryside.
The Viareggio city coast is lined with a multitude of beach clubs where you are able to rent chairs and umbrellas for sunny days on the sand. These clubs also have bars and restaurants.
Driving ten minutes to the south of Viareggio you will find the wild beaches and a large pinewood along the coast, which gives you the opportunity to experience what the Italian coast was like before man.
To the north, half an hour by ferryboat, or in one hour by car, you can visit The Cinque Terre with its famous rocky coast line and crystal clear waters.
In twenty-five minutes you can also get to Massaciuccoli Lake where you can take part in the sailing courses held at the lakes Sailing School.
If you look to the east of Viareggio you will see Apuan Alps their sharp peaks, about 2000 meters high, providing a beautidul contrast to the blue waters of the Tyrrhenian sea. The Apuan Alps are known for their marble mines from which Michelangelo extracted blocks to make his most famous sculptures.
Close to Viareggio are also other important cities of note the ancient fortified city of Lucca, Pisa with its leaning tower, Florence, the jewel of the Tuscany and the famous Chianti Area are reachable in an hour or less by car.
This ancient region is rich in history, tradition and culture: marble mining, delicious foods (such as Lardo di Colonnata), rich wines, hiking paths and iron ways to walk. All of this makes the area near Viareggio worth a visit. You never know what you will find whether you are hiking through the hills or wandering down a forgotten lane in a quiet Italian country village. Viareggio means above all Carnevale: four weeks of folly in which tourists from all over Italy come to admire the most famous allegorical floats in the world. Each year on the four consecutive Sundays before Lent, floats parade up and down the boardwalk boasting enormous papier mâché that satirize current socio-political events, those in show business and politicians in a half satirical, half artisan tradition. At the end of the parade, the party continues with festivals in various neighbourhoods during which streets close to traffic and fill with masks, music and dancing.
