About this property

Historic Farmhouse with new upscale interior

The Homestead Farmhouse was built by Alonzo and Ersie Spencer. They raised a family with six children in this home that was built during the depression using lumber taken from trees on the property. Through the years it has been modernized. I am the their granddaughter and I used it for an art studio and gallery until the summer of 2015. I totally remodeled and updated the interior. There is a large new kitchen, 2 bedrooms and a bathroom with a shower featuring handprinted tiles. There is energy efficient heating and cooling. There is a wonderful large porch on the front. A remnant of early times, the root cellar is in back of the house. The smoke house is no longer standing. There are two ponds on the property and a wooded 40 acres to explore. The Homestead has the added convenience of not being on a dirt road. For this reason it is perfect for motorcycles. The location is about half way between Jasper and Ponca. It is close to Buffalo river access and hiking trails.

I’ve stayed here before & knew what to expect. It’s pretty clean (dusty window sills are okay). It certainly isn’t upscaleas described. It’s mid. However, there was a nice assortment of pantry items (flour, sugar, salt, pepper, coffee) that you might not find elsewhere. We encountered our first problem upon check in. The code that was sent, wasn’t correct. Fortunately, Merlyn is very responsive & we got the correct code after a few guesses. Additionally, the WiFi name & password that were supplied with the check in information weren’t correct. We thought it didn’t work, & there is no cell service inside because of the metal roof. I located the modem & found the password. There was an index card with the information by the TV, but we discovered that when we were checking out because we don’t watch TV. We had an adventure with a large wasp in the bathroom. I called Merlyn & in the time it took for her to arrive (not much time), I caught it & put it outside. She did bring me wasp spray. The first night the smoke detector started beeping. I message the host & at some point, someone came & took it down. Merlyn messaged me that it was “resolved.” No. They left it in the pantry still beeping. We eventually put it outside for the rest of our stay. The second day, I caught a gray tree frog in the bathroom & put it outside. The creatures are coming in somewhere. Merlyn was very responsive to my many issues; however, the smoke detector issue is a problem.

Great stay

We had a great time here. There was great access to multiple parks and hikes on the Buffalo. Our dogs really enjoyed the fields next door as well as the fact that they got to stay with us 24/7. We had a great time!

Perfect location

This is the perfection location! We did several hikes and even took a day trip to Eureka Springs. The host was excellent with communicating with me when I reached out. We will be back again. My young adult children and the grand pup loved it as well.

Great location for the Upper Buffalo River

We spent a weekend in this very well located property in the upper Buffalo River area. I would recommend it for a small family weekend getaway as it has large open spaces to the back and one side. The place is a historic homestead, has been renovated, and is simple and efficient.

Hiking Weekend

Location was very convenient to nice hiking trails. No cell service available in the area so was nice to have reliable WiFi at the Farmhouse. The Farmhouse was spacious and perfect spot to relax in the evenings on the porch.

Visiting Daughter who works in the area

Great property, that is right off the road and close to many hiking trails. Very easy to find and we had a great visit. The property was clean but did have some pet hair so if you have allergies be aware.

Lovely place to stay

We were very pleased with this rental. It was just as described, very clean and nicely furnished. This is an older home, so called the homestead, but it has been updated so that it is very comfortable. The location was great, and we really enjoyed our stay. Some of our family were staying nearby, and it was very convenient for us all to get together. Would definitely book again. Host communicated well.

Great place

We stayed three nights at the farmhouse and it was great. It had lots of dishes and had everything we needed. It was close to the Buffalo river for hiking and swimming. I gave it four stars because the inside was a bit musty and there was also a small hole rotted out in the wooden walkway up to the front patio and with a kid running around was a bit unsafe.

Why they chose this property

This property is dear to my heart because it has been in my family for 4 generations. When times were hard most of the people of this area left in the early 1950's to find work in cities primary Kansas City. I was raised there but never lost my feeling of home that this farmhouse represents to me. I think you too will enjoy the warmth of this old farmhouse with modern conveniences.

What makes this property unique

The Homestead is in an ideal location. It is just 5 miles from Jasper and very close to river access at Kyles landing.
