About this property
FIVE-STAR SOUTH DALTON RANCH VACATION HOME
Available Summer 2025 from September 1st-16th, with weekly discount.
Located in beautiful Dalton Ranch in Durango, Colorado, 362 Horse Thief Lane is a 2350 square foot home. Ideally located in the Animas Valley for a wide variety of year round adventures and uses, the house is single level, with three bedrooms, three baths, and is within a short 10 minute drive to downtown Durango, home to hundreds of great restaurants and shopping opportunities. In the opposite direction along highway 550 it is only 15 minutes to the base of the famous Purgatory ski resort. The 7th fairway for the Dalton Ranch semi-private championship golf course is right off the patio deck. Within walking distance, less than a half-mile away, is a gourmet market, a wine & spirits shop, and a True Value Hardware store. Our home is a bright, airy, open-floor plan that includes two bedrooms, each with en-suite full bathrooms, and an office with a futon and full bath. The house sleeps two couples or a family of five comfortably. The master suite includes a king bed, steam shower, large soaking tub, reading area and a full walk-in closet. The Southwest Room, has a queen bed, spacious double sink bathroom, and large cedar paneled closet. The Office has book-lined walls, desk, and a queen futon. The living room area has a gas fireplace, large screen television with Direct TV, entertainment center, DVD player, and deep leather couches for relaxation and entertaining. The vaulted ceiling and the glass and heavy beam trusses frame the magnificent view, which includes a passing glimpse of the classic steam engine train that travels to Silverton each day during the season. You cannot hear this iconic steam whistle echoing our wild west’s past without drawing a smile. Terraced patios run down the backyard to the fairway’s edge and small pond that is likely full of transient geese, ducks, and occasional strolling deer insuring both privacy and open space living at its very best. Our home comes with a thoroughly modern kitchen sporting all the latest amenities including, stainless steel gas oven and stovetop burners with a large grilling plate, microwave, dishwasher, coffeemaker, wine cooler, and ice machine with Bosch, Kenmore Elite, Viking, and Kitchen Aid appliances throughout.
A very nice and bright formal dining room table seats 10 and offers an elegant dining area. A smaller breakfast/lunch table for four right off the kitchen, with a glass alcove facing the deck and the red rim cliffs across the valley, makes less formal meals a cinch. The open and spacious kitchen area is rimmed with high-backed stools and marble countertops ideal for informal communal meal preparations. Plenty of cabinet space and cooking/dining/table equipment is ready at hand for the most discriminating chef to prepare and host a successful dinner party.
With extras including a Kitchen Aid gas grill, outdoor wooden dining table and benches, plus casual deck dining/entertaining/lounging chairs with small end tables for cocktail hour on the large patio, a laundry area with washer and dryer, and a two car garage with plenty of additional off road parking on the extended driveway pad you will have everything you need to enjoy the Western Slope Lifestyle and the region’s pleasant, temperate weather, including three hundred sunny days each year. Durango was recently named by The Wall Street Journal as one of the five best small communities in America noting the “quality of the entire living experience.”
As fellow travelers we do not like to leave our dog at home so we understand the feelings of responsible pet owners and are very pet friendly. Let us know your pet related needs.
Dalton Ranch Golf Club, a 7,040-yard championship course, has a beautiful new clubhouse with restaurant, sports bar & pro shop, and also offers a year round fitness center (trainers and massage therapist on site), and seasonal outdoor swimming pool and tennis courts. Just beyond the golf course is the Durango Hot Springs Resort offering therapy pools, a pool, and massage services. The world-renowned trout habitat, the Animas River of the San Juan Mountains, runs through Dalton Ranch and offers gold medal fly-fishing waters just minutes from your doorstep. The San Juan National Forest offers dozens of hiking and biking trails ranging from easy to wildly exciting within a short drive to the trailheads.
Our immaculate Durango home is an ideal choice for two couples or a family of five wanting to get away from it all, and still have it all at their fingertips, nestled within the tall cliffs of the lovely Animas Valley in Southwestern Colorado. Thank you for considering our home for your vacation.

Hosted by Bob and Mary Rubadeau 970-708-9488
Bob and Mary Rubadeau have lived in Telluride and the Four Corners region of Colorado for nearly twenty years. Mary has served as a chief administrator for schools in Telluride, Cortez, and in Durango with the San Juan BOCES. Bob is a noted Western author and novelist who writes of his iconic fifty-year international sailing career and his award winning fictional private detective series that calls Telluride home. The couple spends the summer months aboard their sailboat in Maine and when skiing permits them to leave mid-winter they also set sail with a fraternity of close sailing friends located in ports around the world.
Why they chose this property
HORSE THIEF CAMP is a newly redecorated and remodeled luxury home which the owners purchased in 2016 and would like to offer to selective renters while they are away for the summer or during four weeks in the winter when they are sailing. Bob and Mary Rubadeau would ideally like a couple or small family to spend the entire summer months from June 1st thru September 7 in one of the loveliest small towns in Colorado. Accommodations in the rental price may be negotiated for long term and multi-year agreements.
What makes this property unique
Our house is bordered by the 7th fairway and a sizable pond that is the vacationhome of wild geese, otters, and deer are constant visitors and the steam train whistle as it goes through Trimble Crossing is the perfect iconic western music for the post card scene.
