Calpe has an interesting mix of modern supermarkets, traditional groceries, bodegas and chique boutiques. It has two huge beaches with long, traffic-free promenades that wind behind them. Walk far enough along the beach promenade from the town and you reach the thriving fishing harbour with it's multitude of restaurants offering freshly caught seafood. The Peñon de Ifach, a monolith of limestone rock, towers high above it. Not to be missed is a stroll around the old town to admire the incredible hand-painted murals, the old castle grounds, quaint cobbled streets and local museums.
From Calpe, it's possible to see as far down the coast as Benidorm, some 20 kilometres away. Before that, there’s Altea, a charming cluster of white-washed houses with a particularly impressive blue-domed hilltop church. The old town square is a lovely place to sit and enjoy a romantic evening drink, watch the sun set and admire the amazing view towards Albir, a smart resort with a white pebble beach.
Calpe, together with Denia and Javea form the corners of the so-called 'Golden Triangle', acclaimed by the World Health Organisation for having one of the best climates in Europe. Calpe, Javea and Denia all have Roman origins. Javea is in contrast, mainly flat and sheltered by the Montgo mountain that dominates the view inland. It’s a very pleasant town with nice beaches, good restaurants and an old centre. Denia is a larger provincial city, with a good choice of good clothes and shoe shops. It is accessible by rail from the nearby station at Calpe, just 1.5km walk from the villa. Denia also offers car ferry access to the Balearic Islands. Just to the north of Calpe is Moraira, a small yet stylish resort with a marina and a choice of two beaches, the main town beach or the smaller El Portet beach backed by a fringe of restaurants which are great for lunch or watching the evening sun go down.
Just a short drive inland from the villa is the beautiful Jalon valley, renowned for orange and lemon groves and the production of mistela and excellent table wines. The road from Jalon to the Sierra Bernia mountains is truly breathtaking and is well worth the drive to get a feel for the scale and beauty of the landscape that is unique to this northern part of the Costa Blanca.
Local sports activities include scuba diving, surfing, swimming, tennis, padel, walking, sailing, cycling, fishing, horse riding, golf (choice of several courses), wind-surfing, SUP, water skiing, mountain biking, rock climbing and paragliding.
The mountainous, yet green countryside provides fantastic walking country, with well-marked paths through fragrant shrubs and pines. Even if you don’t want to go walking, it’s well worthwhile exploring the area by car. One nice aspect of this part of Spain is that you're never far from a restaurant, often offering lunch on a shady terrace with stunning views.
It’s worth taking a trip into Alicante or slightly further afield to Valencia - both are impressive, vibrant cities with stunning baroque architecture, attractive waterfronts, great shopping and restaurants. The shopping experience in the smaller towns tends to revolve around their thriving local markets where hundreds of stallholders will vie to sell you their freshly picked local vegetables and fruit, ceramics, clothes, shoes and leather goods.
