About this property
The Bakery: Historic adobe near downtown
Come live in a Bakery! This 110-year-old adobe market/bakery has been artfully converted into a comfortable, upscale home—a quiet sanctuary right in the midst of the action. Downtown Tucson, the Tucson Convention Center, theaters, restaurants and the streetcar to the University of Arizona and Banner–University Medical Center are all close by. The Bakery sits in a quiet historic neighborhood just four blocks from the center of downtown and the streetcar route, with an excellent Walk Score. Ideal for couples, friends and families with older children who want large, comfortable gathering areas for shared time but also desire separate bedrooms and bathrooms. This is a home where you won't be tripping over your luggage, waiting for the bathroom, or hearing the people in the next room. It's a full-size home that just happens to be in one of Tucson's most convenient locations. If you value authenticity but also enjoy comfort and convenience, look no further. Thick adobe walls, flagstone and hardwood flooring, luxury linens, new beds and sofas, and a full-size washer and dryer. Delightfully furnished with an industrial vibe. The expansive great room has soaring exposed-beam ceilings and partially exposed adobe walls. A repurposed wood-and-pipe bar-height gathering table seats eight, adjacent to comfortable sofa and chair seating. The 55-inch smart TV streams Amazon Prime. High-speed fiber internet with Wi-Fi, a Bose speaker, original art and designer lighting complete the room. Relax in your own private, high-walled courtyard garden with an orange tree, fountain, natural-gas grill, and vintage patio table and chairs. The completely outfitted kitchen has a gas stove, dishwasher, full-size refrigerator with ice maker, drip and French press coffee makers, microwave, blender and toaster. Fitz & Floyd dishes and stainless flatware for eight are provided, along with condiments, teas, herbs and spices. The front bedroom has a queen bed; the sunroom bedroom has a king. Both beds have memory-foam toppers. Note about Children: Because of the narrow, uneven concrete staircase leading down to the cellar, which has no handrail and cannot be safely gated or blocked, the Bakery is not suitable for young, mobile children. A non-mobile infant may be accommodated at the parents' discretion. Children over 8-10 are usually good with stairs, but some are fascinated and reckless. You know you child, and we can discuss children over the age of 9. A note about animals: The Bakery is a no-pet property and has not been made pet-safe. There are plants inside the house and courtyard that are toxic to dogs, including adeniums, oleander, lantana and a sago palm. Some are within easy reach, and two of the larger indoor plants cannot readily be moved. Service animals are accommodated as required by law and Vrbo policy. Please review the animal provisions in our House Rules before booking.

Thank you for your wonderful review and taking such great care of the Bakery. Hope you return to Tucson soon.
We had a wonderful experience in this house. Parking was easy. Plenty of space. Great living area for gathering space. Instructions were great. Nancy was very responsive. It's only a few minutes from UofA campus. I would definitely come here again.
The Bakery is a unique gem that is worth the trip to Tucson. The attention to detail in every room is superlative and Nancy, who really is the owner as well as the property manager, could teach a Master class in how to welcome and support guests! Truly hope we can make it back again to this great property.
The Bakery was so beautiful and cozy. Everything we needed was provided. We enjoyed the downtown location. The back garden patio was just lovely. Nancy is warm and welcoming. We really loved staying here.

Thank you for your kind words. I must admit I was surprised that you rated the Bakery only “4 stars.” We have over 70 reviews on the various listing sites, and they are ALL “5 stars”... until now! I looked at our texts and emails, and didn’t see any problems mentioned, so I am anxious to find out what we could have done better to earn the excellent rating that we strive for. Please text or email me and let me know if you have any suggestions for improvement. We really value feedback from our guests, and many of the improvements we have made to the property over the years is based their input.
Easy access to downtown and a short walk to Bario Brewery let us explore some new to us areas in Tucson. Well kept place and very good instructions about the place and things to do in Tucson. Love the history of the house and area.
The bakery was perfect for our needs to have a mini vacation in n Tucson. Super comfortable will everything you need. The unit is in a quiet little neighborhood walking distance to downtown. The little garden was lovely to enjoy morning coffee and the living room spacious and relaxing.
This was our second stay at the Bakery. We love it so much my wife said she'd buy it if it was for sale. The property is charming and the owners are great!

Thank you! And I know exactly how Anne feels because that is how I felt when I first saw the Bakery. (My husband took a little longer to get there, because he decided to be the practical one in the relationship.)
Thanks for staying, being such wonderful guests, and we hopefully will see you again next year!
Sincerely,
Nancy & Brad

Our stay in Tucson was fantastic. Nancy’s attention to detail; her passion about the history and integrity of the property was evident. We loved the ability to walk just about everywhere, with easy street parking when we drove. Our favorite place to unwind after a day of exploring was the courtyard. We’re already planning our next trip!

Very Close to Historic Tucson
We enjoyed our stay. The house is quite eclectic and comfortable. We were steps away from the Turquoise Trail which we wanted to walk. The location is very close to the historic Tucson and a quick tram tide to the University.

Thank you for your review. I'm glad you got to do the turquoise trail. And you mentioning it reminded me that I need to put something in the Guidebook about it. It's amazing to see the size of the Presidio Wall nestled up against the huge government buildings and realize that it was the best protection they had only 150 years ago.
We had a wonderful stay at The Bakery with our son and daughter-in-law. The house was lovely and had everything we needed. It was in a great location, close to downtown and walking distance to fun restaurants. It was also a short drive to beautiful hiking trails. 5 Star Rating goes to Nancy. She was an awesome host. We will definitely be back!

About the host
Hosted by Nancy Day
I've lived in Tucson most of my life and love it. My husband and I have traveled a lot, and enjoy exploring older, eclectic neighborhoods-the less 'planned,' the better. We love commercial/industrial buildings converted to residential use; steampunk and industrial style decor; modern mixed with antiques, repurposed objects, and old urban neighborhoods that are being revitalized. That is why we bought the Bakery. We want to live here full time when we retire. A few years away, but since this is a one-of-a-kind building, we had to get it when it became available.
Why they chose this property
The Bakery is the 'real thing.' It is featured on the first page of the application for Historical Status for Armory Park. It predates most the city records, first appears on the Sanborn Insurance maps between 1896 and 1904. It was large for an adobe building of that time, and was most probably a barracks. We don't know much before the late 1930's, when it was a grocery store. It was also printing shop, pinball repair shop and lastly a Bakery before being converted. It is light filled, airy, unique and cool. Everyday activities take on an almost spiritual, timeless quality. There is no other home exactly like this; probably because of it's long and changing history.
Think of it! How many times in your life will you get to live in a Bakery?
What makes this property unique
The thick adobe walls provide a quiet sanctuary, while the preserved Bakery storefront allows you to view the activity outside. It offers the rare combination of being in the middle of everything, while being quiet and private.
Armory park is an eclectic, revitalizing urban neighborhood, where there is something interesting, different, and often weird around every corner. It is the best place in Tucson to live if you want to forego driving for a while. It is within walking or streetcar distance to anything you could need.
This area of Tucson is one of the oldest continually occupied places in North America. It has a tolerant, laid back vibe, and thriving art/culture scene, and very little pretentiousness. Wear your comfortable clothing, or dress up if you feel like it.
