If you are looking for a few days of peace relaxation but still handy to all Melbourne has to offer, this Willsmere apartment will tick all those boxes. We will be back.
This was our second stay at Jo’s place and really enjoyed the apartment and beautiful gardens where we could safely walk our dogs. The area was secure and safe too. Only thing is that there is no WiFi which would have been handy to watch our own Netflix shows.
The host Jo was very easy to communicate with, I always received a prompt reply. The apartment was comfortable, clean and very cosy. The grounds of Willsmere are so beautiful and peaceful. A truly great place to stay.
third time at Willsmere, a great historic place, the former asylum is a quite beautiful place where you can go for walks. spent halloween season here and had the best weekend. Jo is a great host and very responsive. as a history buff i enjoy this area and the nature surroundings. also close to get to city of melbourne for a night out. i can say i love Willsmere and enjoy time here when i do stay.
Great location to suit our needs. Second time we’ve stayed there, and will definitely head back again

While the host is excellent in communication and response, the place is one of the worst we had stayed. The front door opens into the bedroom, so that each time we need to go in and out the front door, we had to go through the bedroom. The unit was stuffy and dim, The sun does not come into the living room at all and the lights are dim at night. The smoke alarm is way too high to reach, even if we stand on the dinning table, we still need a chair to climb up to reach it, which is dangerous. The advertisement did not mention the 27 steps from the carpark to the apartment. For us in our 60s and 70s, carrying 4 suitcases up is a challenge to say the least. Carrying groceries up to the apartment is also a chore. We feel being cheated when this essential information is withheld from us until we arrived there. The electricity cannot bear a load, I.e. if the heaters are on, to turn on the kettle or some other appliances will cause the fuse to jump.We chose this one as we've had a very good experience with an old observatory turned into a hotel. In that one, the uilding and furnishing was luxurious, so this one was a total disappointment. Also cobwebs were found on the wall of the other bedroom. When i took down the print that said 'lunatic asylum', there was a thick layer of dust on the top of the frame, which i wiped away and placed the print aside.Do not stay in a lunatic asylum if you can, that's my advice to travellers.
Such a unique property and history! Jo was fantastic and incredibly responsive. If you don't mind the bus, public transit is walking distance to get you anywhere you could want to go.
