Only half an hour by car from the SJU airport, this seaside getaway is located between Fajardo, Rio Grande, and the Atlantic Ocean. More than 12 miles (19 kilometers) of spectacular coastline make this area a paradise for surfers, snorkelers and sun lovers alike.

The attractive fresco of Luquillo extends beyond its fine golden sand and the waves of the sky-blue sea. The municipality borders El Yunque, the only tropical forest in the United States, where the peaks of the Luquillo Mountain Range rise up to 3,525 feet (1,075 meters) above sea level. Its unique landscape, with easy access to both the mountains and the beach, makes Luquillo an ideal destination for travelers looking to enjoy quality time outdoors.

Sand, sun and surfing

Bathers only have one problem in Luquillo: deciding which beach to choose. You won’t be wrong if you opt for the Balneario La Monserrate, a large area with a comfortable parking lot, bathrooms and dressing rooms, outdoor showers and more than 25 gacebos to meet with family and friends.

Playa Azul is popular for activities such as swimming, snorkeling, rowing, kitesurfing and kayaking, while Costa Azul, Playa Mamayes and Playa Fortuna are quiet places to sit on a beach chair or rest in a hammock under the shade of palm trees.

Surfers from all over the world come to ride the star waves of La Pared. This easily accessible stretch of coastline adjoins Calle Herminio Díaz Navarro, where Boardriders Surf Bar offers cold beer, ideal food options to consume on the beach, a relaxed atmosphere, live music on weekends, and its famous karaoke nights on Tuesdays.

Excellent places next to the beach

As you drive along the PR-3 you will find Los Kioskos de Luquillo, a strip of restaurants, bars and gift shops next to the road located along Luquillo beach.

No matter what type of food you want, you will probably find it here, from traditional Puerto Rican dishes such as alcapurrias and mofongo at Jíbaro’s (kiosk #22), locally fished seafood in La Parilla (#2) to calzones and pizzas at Revolution Pizza Shop (#34). Bars such as Tattoo Tavern (n.º 17) and MojitoLab (n.º 42) offer customers a variety of tropical cocktails.

More than a collection of places to dine and drink, Los Kioskos is a good faith destination in itself. Although many stalls are open all week, the atmosphere is really lively on weekends, when the locals come here to spend their days off eating, drinking, dancing and sunbathing. While reggaeton sounds through the car speakers in the parking lot, customers alternate between taking daiquiris, eating something and cooling off in the ocean just a few steps away. And the action doesn’t stop when the sun goes down; the bars keep the party until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.
