Sandown is a lovely destination for a seaside holiday, with bathing waters, miles of soft golden sands, and an entertaining pleasure pier. The Esplanade has seaside cafes, souvenirs, and beach shops together with several restaurants, all with glorious sea views. The pier is a year-round destination with traditional pier amusements together with bumper cars, crazy golf, bowling, a soft play area for little ones, and, in summer, great fishing off the pier end. The beach has lifeguards in summer and a range of hire outlets, with everything from deck chairs, sun loungers, and windbreaks, to sea fishing kayaks, surfboards, pedalos, and long board skateboards. There is a surfing school and a water sports centre that offers a range of tuition from kite surfing to sailing.
The High Street runs parallel to the seafront esplanade giving easy access to a selection of tourist and arty shops, together with banks, pubs, cafes, restaurants, and major supermarket chains. Sandown’s well-equipped leisure centre has an indoor pool, health suite, fitness classes, and gym. Additional Sandown attractions include its popular 18-hole golf course, Dinosaur Isle with its life-size models, and Isle of Wight Zoo, famous for its Tiger Sanctuary. Along the seafront towards Dinosaur Isle there is a pitch and put, a bowling green, and large play park with skateboard ramps, basketball courts, a football pitch, a climbing wall, and duck pond.
The Sanctuary is a 10-minute walk from Sandown train station.
