Acerca de este alojamiento

The Shenandoah Basset Dacha

Experience the magic of another era in this big, comfortable Victorian house in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, on a quiet, tree-lined street in Strasburg’s historic district. The neighborhood is wreathed in meadows and dotted with old churches, with views of Massanutten Mountain and the Alleghenies in the distance. Built in 1868 as a Lutheran parsonage, the house is like a folk art museum inside, with rich colors and paintings on the walls –an unforgettable backdrop for making memories. There are 5 bedrooms, 3 full bathrooms, a dining room, a parlor, a living room, a sun room/former art studio, and a fully-equipped kitchen. There are also two porches, one in front, with a bench swing and cushioned seating; the other, screened-in, in back, for summer meals. There’s a brick patio right off the back porch, adjoining a fully-fenced, spacious yard. The house is a fifteen-minute walk from the Shenandoah River, and a two-block walk from Strasburg's quaint main street (King Street), where you will find boutiques, antique shops, restaurants, and the town green—where they give free concerts in summer. There’s a beautiful public pool in the town park, a mile away, overlooked by Massanutten Mountain. The park has a playground for little kids, a boat slip to the Shenandoah, basketball and tennis courts, gazebos for picnicking, and fields for soccer. From Strasburg, it’s a ten- or fifteen-minute drive to the Shenandoah National Park entrance in Front Royal; to the Belle Grove and Cedar Creek historic site in Middletown; and to the Valley's many other attractions--battlefields, vineyards, taprooms, gastropubs, hiking paths, parks, gardens, museums and scenic bridges.

The house is characterful, colorful and cozy, with loads of family space both indoors and outside. The ground floor has a parlor, a TV/family room, a dining room, a full bathroom, a sun room/former art studio (one of the owners was an artist, specializing in basset hounds), and a fully equipped kitchen with an Aga gas stove and a built-in breakfast nook. In the breezeway between the kitchen and the back porch there’s a laundry room and a Summer Kitchen with an electric stove. On the brick patio beside the porch, there’s a grill for summer barbecuing. The back garden is sprawling, English-style, with lots of shade trees, and extends to a front lawn that’s also fenced in. There are dog doors throughout the main floor; the flaps can be removed so dogs can get easily to the garden (first make sure all the gates in the picket fence are closed!).

Every room has a different color, theme and use, and you’ll see oil paintings on the walls of basset hounds and of Russian scenes— the owners were professors of Russian and Soviet literature and culture (as well as dog lovers). There are four bedrooms on the second floor. The master has a queen bed and a private full bathroom; the blue bedroom has a full bed, the green bedroom has bunk beds, and the red bedroom has two twins. There’s a second full bathroom in the second-floor hall. There’s a fifth bedroom in the attic, which has its own AC and heating and a double bed.

Other points of interest:

•There’s a carport for PARKING, and you can also park in front of the house.

•There’s a wood-burning stove in the Green Parlor (TV room) , and firewood for your use on the front porch. (Don't make fires in the Yellow Parlor fireplace, the chimney is 200 years old—too fragile.)

• Feel free to use the china, silver, glassware, cooking equipment and table linens in the cabinets and bureaus during your stay for your feasts with family and friends.

• One caution: a calico cat lives here sometimes. Every trace of her existence cannot be wholly eradicated through vacuuming. So if you have severe cat allergies, this may not be the house for you.

I will be happy to tell you anything else you would like to know about the Shenandoah Basset Dacha if you make an inquiry. Email me!

Guest access
You can go anywhere you like in the house, but if you stay in the attic bedroom, turn on the light in the stairwell (right inside the latched door to the attic, on your left on the wall) before you go up, and watch your step! Please do not go into the cellar. But the fuse box is in there; the Property Manager can come over and flip switches if need be. Just in case: the switch to the overhead light in the cellar is on the low ceiling as you enter, directly above your head, right next to the door frame.

Other things to note
ENJOY your time in this house, and do things people did when life was unplugged! Cook, feast, play games (there’s a huge games cupboard in the TV room), paint, read, write, build a fire in the wood-burning stove, or take walks in the neighborhood and its meadows. The house has WIFI, so you can also work on your laptop, watch movies or news (the house subscribes to Sling) and there are three TVs, where you can access your streaming services.

I will email you the full house guide the week before you arrive. Please email me if you have any questions about the house once you are here. To see guest reviews, go to the other major short-term rental site—I am a VRBO novice!

Great property for groups and activities

The property was big enough for the 5 of us without anyone feeling cramped, and it's located with enough things to do nearby that we were able to keep plenty busy.

A perfect weekend

The dacha was so warm and inviting! Everything is decorated to the nines and there are so many fun Easter eggs (literally and figuratively) to find throughout the house. My friends and I loved every second of staying here

A Truly Magical Trip!

My husband, son, and mother in law stayed here for our daughter’s wedding. We could have planned a trip around just visiting this house! It’s an art gallery and museum all in one. Countless books to read, beautiful works of art from oil paintings to pottery - just gorgeous. The period details of the house were mesmerizing. My 19 year old son said it’s his favorite place he’s ever stayed. I wish we could have spent more time IN the house, but it was a lovely welcome at the end of what were 3 very hectic days. Liesl was attentive and extremely welcoming. It was a beautiful trip, and I hope we can go back soon.

The Basset Dacha is Amazing and Unusual!

From the VRBO photos I could tell that the Basset Dacha was out of the ordinary, which is always an attraction for me. I often look out for such lodgings, because they help make vacation trips more memorable. My family and I loved exploring the many nooks and crannies of the house, which is lovingly maintained by an owner who has obviously spent a lot of time adding amenities for the comfort of her guests. Lots of electrical outlets for guests with electronics, which in my experience is unusual in older homes. The bedrooms are cozy and comfortable. The 3 bathrooms are well equipped with modern plumbing and supplies, as is the kitchen. The house is in a lovely neighborhood not too far from the Strasburg River Walk and the historic downtown area. We loved sitting out on the back porch overlooking the garden with a charming little pet cemetery. There is an eclectic collection of 19th century Russian art on the walls, and well-preserved antique furniture throughout the house. The owner texted me with detailed instructions on all facets of the house, which was extremely helpful. This was a great place for a vacation and family reunion, and I plan to stay here again.

Perfect for our family

This house was a big, warm hug. My stay here was with extended family, with much of our stay in Strasburg focused on a family reunion hosted about 15 minutes away. We loved this house for all of the seating, cooking and sleeping spaces. It was quite a contrast to the sterile and more businesslike environment of my cousin’s rental a few blocks away.

Extended family get together

This house is so very unique. The house is beautiful with antique charm. Walls are covered with art and amenities abound. The owners are clearly dog lovers and have made the house so easy for your pet. Great back yard with fence, dog doors, etc. Plenty of seating for everyone and you can spend time in a different part of the house, each day (the screened-in porch was wonderful). We arrived during 100 degree weather but the air conditioners managed to keep the house cool, anyway. The hidden bedroom in the attic was neat. The area was charming with tubing/kayaking/rafting/hourseback-riding all nearby.

I'm a writer, translator and teacher, and lived in this house the last three years, but it's been in the family since 1998. I love Strasburg, the Shenandoah Valley and this house, and hope you will, too!

Por qué escogió este alojamiento

This beautiful old house, which used to be a parsonage, has so much character and old-world charm and comfort. The yard is big, green and leafy, lined by a long picket fence; and we have both a front porch and a screened-in back porch, where you can have summer meals while feeling nature around you, and watching the birds at the feeder. The neighborhood is historic and quiet--laced with meadows, dotted with churches, and with a view of the Massanutten Mountain and the Alleghenies everywhere you look. A peaceful carillon plays in the evening. The River Walk to the Shenandoah proceeds right in front of the house! Strasburg is a friendly small town, with wonderful people, boutiques and antique shops, and a lively town green, where they give free concerts on summer Fridays; and we are a ten-minute drive from appealing historic towns-like Woodstock (10 miles south) and Middletown (four miles north)-home to the Cedar Creek battlefield and the Belle Grove plantation. Winchester, the biggest nearby town, is 18 miles north on 81 and has big stores and malls, as well as a university, museums and galleries, and a lovely historic walking district with restaurants, cafes and shops. Strasburg also has good restaurant options-especially the Box Office Brewery-with lots of live music--country, folk and bluegrass--and a family-friendly menu. The Shenandoah Basset Dacha is a lovely home-away-from-home for your family, in a town that exhales the harmony of older times and ways.

Qué hace que este alojamiento sea especial

You will see many paintings, vivid colors, and original architectural flourishes in this house. The last owners were professors of Russian language and literature, and the wife was an artist, who specialized in painting basset hounds, her favorite breed of dog. Your children might enjoy counting the dog faces that peek out from the many paintings on the walls! The look inside the house is somewhere in between Norman Rockwell and a folklore museum. When you stay at the Shenandoah Basset Dacha, you will be inhabiting a real-life artwork in three dimensions--but it is not a fussy house. It is designed, and intended, for relaxation, feasting, and warm family moments.
