Everything is superlatives in tiny Round Pond ME in the summer and this rental is right up there. The property is exactly as shown, although the views from the deck of the boat harbor and islands beyond were somehow even more stunning. The bald eagles, osprey and herons were fun to see. It was super clean and came stocked with bottled spring water to substitute for the tap (which has a mineral character some may not like). There was a binder with house rules, passwords, tips and lots of local knowledge. There is a good harbor side restaurant, a locals-dominated pub, a mini-mart and a delightful coffee house, all walkable from the property. Round Pond is central on the east side of the Pemaquid peninsula; short drives to all the natural and historic sites. It also offers quick access to Damariscotta, the river, and the wide cluster of oyster farms making it a must see for fresh half-shell aficionados. It’s well off of and away from the Rte 1 summer hubbub. And absolutely stop by the Walpole Barn on Rd 129 - hands down the best collection of high quality Maine crafts, books and delectables, the area’s preeminent (best priced) wine shop and an inviting back yard to enjoy Glidden Point oysters, from just across the river. TO BRING: bedsheets for queen and/or twin, towels, your preferred groceries and condiments, toiletries and a good Bluetooth speaker (WiFi was fast), Finally, a shout out to Sandy, for probably the most prompt and informative email responses I’ve had on VRBO.
