This town is a popular stop on the famous Ring of Kerry scenic drive and the starting and finishing point of the 200-km Kerry Way walking trail.

The town's 19th-century buildings include St. Mary’s Cathedral and across the bridge from the cathedral is Killarney National Park. Killarney National Park was the first national park in Ireland, created when the Muckross Estate was donated to the Irish Free State in 1932. The extent of the park’s range and rugged landscape is 26,000 acres, encompassing the infamous McGillycuddy Reeks Mountain Range which includes Ireland’s highest Mountain, Carrauntoohill standing at over 1,000 meters.

Muckross House, Gardens & Traditional Farm is situated on the grounds of Killarney National Park and well worth a visit. There are a wide choice of marked walks and trails through the National Park, around the lakes and in the surrounding mountains. The park is also home to native red deer.
