'My Favorite Place on Earth'

This is the Hawaii you dream about! This little bungalow on the beach is an ideal tropical vacation destination for a couple or a family with children. It is the perfect island get-away for Honeymooners. The house and lanai open to expansive views of the beach, ocean and sunsets year round. The lawn and gardens are lush with native Hawaiian trees and plants including a dozen coconut palms. Start your day sipping your morning coffee on your private lanai while watching for migrating whales (Dec - March) or pods of spinner dolphins that visit the nearby Marine Sanctuary. Spend the rest of the day relaxing in the hammock in the shade of coconut palms or swimming with turtles, snorkeling or scuba diving in one of the best diving spots in Hawaii, the Puako reef, just in front of the hale. (You can read about it in guidebooks) An entrance spot into the ocean is just a few yards down the beach south of Hale Malia. Children will enjoy hours of beach combing and exploring the tidepools. If you are tired of packing/ lugging your family to GO to the beach this is a good place for you - you ARE ON THE BEACH.

The "classic Hawaiian beach house" -style interior decor is tastefully designed by Fine Design Interiors of Waimea and featured in West Hawaii Today. Home features Mayumi Oda original art in the living room.

Beaches and Touring the sights of the Island: Puako is conveniently located for visiting the numerous sights of the Big Island from north to south. Numerous Beaches and resorts are within 5 - 20 minutes away from Hale Malia. Closest public beaches: '69' Beach in Waialea Bay (5 minutes) , Hapuna Beach (10 minutes) Driving times to some sights of interest: City of Refuge (south), 1 hr 45 min, Captain Cook/Kealakekukua Bay 1/1/2 hr, Kailua Kona 30 min, Kona airport, 25 min., Waimea 20 min., Hawi/ Waipio Valley 1 hour, Hilo/ Hawaiian TropicalBotanical Gardens 1 hr, Volcanoes Park, 1 1/2 hr.

Puako is also a great choice for vacations, because it boasts the highest number of sunny days (and the lowest annual rainfall) in the entire state of Hawaii. In fact, frequently it may be raining on the nearby beaches south of us and as you drive back to Puako it is all sunny and clear!!

We had a wonderful trip staying at this beautiful beach house. There were amazing views and we had beautiful weather. The house had everything we needed and was clean and well kept. We couldn't have asked for more.

My Favorite Place on earth is an idyllic spot for two people. The views are stunning, the sound of waves lulling you to sleep are peaceful, and waking up to a small, but well appointed kitchen to cook breakfast before sightseeing is a plus. Our stay was lovely and a great blend of restful and active days. Our favorite was driving less than 2 miles north to snorkel at Hapuna Beach where there is an abundance of colorful fish to see. We also loved seeing the turtles on the reef right behind the house.We spent most of our time at the house on the lanai watching the waves. There is no air conditioning, but the trade winds kept us comfortable for all but two afternoons. Sleeping with the fans on and the windows open was a must for us and kept us quite comfortable. We would definitely come back to what is now our favorite place on earth and happily recommend it to anyone considering a Big Island vacation.

This property has one of the best views and yard on Puako road. We had a few storm related incidents but got most of them worked out. Heavy wind and rain are not friendly to old cabins. Great having a washer and dryer and nice appliances and a tv. Owner was very responsive.

We are sorry that you had to endure the series of Kona Low storms that wreaked havoc over all the Hawaiian islands. Luckily in our area there was no damage except massive amounts of water -but not even flooding. Puako is typically protected from damage due to its location. I am sorry you did not contact us about the loss of power in a couple of electrical outlets- it turned out to be a tripped circuit breaker so it was a quick fix.

Great communication with host. Check in was easy and necessary info was conveyed well in advance. House was spotless and as advertised. Youre paying for the location and view. It’s a rare gem to find these days and we thoroughly enjoyed it!

Wonderful stay

The bungalow was a perfect home base for our stay on the Big Island. The house was immaculate, although we spent the majority of our time outside in the beautiful yard - lots of birds (including turkeys!) and turtles nearby. Lovely location and home!

Another dreamy stay at Hale Malia

Thank you for sharing your appreciation of our favorite place on earth. We have been coming to this beach house for 22 years and still feel the magic. We love the closeness to nature, the sea and the animals that we can experience right outside the door without having to go anywhere. And the views and sunsets of course. A magical getaway

This adorable bungalow in an absolutely stunning setting made for a magical getaway. Kirsi is a great host as well, and made sure we had all the information we needed.

The setting is indeed awesome- a private bungalow actually on the beach in Hawaii - a rare thing. Having nothing but some sand, lava, tide pools and the surf in the view. We try to maintain an island feeling inside and out that transports you to a different time snd place. Yet the site is a short drive to many activities, hotels snd restaurants when you seek more” action”. Glad to hear you enjoyed or bungalow.🌺

Perfect location and relaxing get away!

We had a lovely time at this house for just under a week. The location was ideal, snorkeling steps away, and plenty to do nearby or just relax on the lovely outdoor furniture and watch the waves. Kirsi was a wonderful host, we can't wait to come back, thank you!

We check and replace bedding , pillows and towels each season - we routinely replace dishes and kitchenware that are looking “ tired” and add new items. We do not bring hand me down items to this house. We are pleased that this made a difference for you. Always a great stay

If you are looking for a laid back, restful and quiet place to stay on the Big Island, this is it! We’ve stayed here many times and it never disappoints. Puako is such a delightful area. Clean, comfy and laid back. Thank you and we hope to come back someday!

Wow!

We fell in love with the cottage and with Puako. The house is cozy and great for a couple. The location is incredible. We hope to stay there again on our next visit to the Big Island.

wonderful place!

beautiful place right on the shoreline, watching humpback whales and turtles while snorkeling right out the front door. Quiet neighborhood, sweet country store just down the road from the house. Very quiet place!

I have only amazing things to say about our stay. This was our second time here and if we are lucky enough to come back to the Big Island, my dream would be to stay here again.The bedroom, dining, kitchen, and living areas are very clean and comfortable and the kitchen is well equipped and maintained. The owners have designed and decorated the house to match the beauty outside.Once the doors and windows are open, all you can see or hear is the ocean and the birds, really paradise. Plenty of chairs for relaxing or reading. We enjoyed some incredible whale watching while there in February/March.Close proximity to gorgeous beaches, restaurants, grocery (including the general store for basics and carryout sandwiches/snacks which is walking distance). Communication with the owners is easy
