Circa 1900 Lower Garden District Craftsman Townhouse
Lower Garden District 2 Bed/2.5 Bath Craftsman Townhouse
Located just half a block from bustling Magazine Street in New Orleans’ historic Lower Garden District and two and a half blocks from St. Charles Avenue’s grand mansions and Mardi Gras parade routes. This recently renovated, fully furnished and outfitted 2-story, 1,300 square foot, 2 bedroom, 2.5 bath townhouse is perfect for a film or television professional, an executive on business, or a family on vacation.
HOUSE LAYOUT
The ground floor features an intimate living room, a powder room with toilet and sink, a dining room that seats 4-6, and a large, fully-equipped kitchen with quartz countertops and ample storage.
Upstairs is comprised of 2 spacious bedrooms (1 queen bed, 1 king bed) with 2 bathrooms separated from each other by a light-filled hall. The back bedroom (QUEEN BED) has an en suite bathroom (shower/tub) that houses the stacked washer/dryer. The front bedroom (KING BED), which is slightly larger than the back bedroom, has a smaller, adjacent bathroom (shower) that is accessed through the shared hall. Both bedrooms have 100% cotton sheets and good hypoallergenic, down-alternative pillows.
Throughout the home, you will find wonderful fine art, quality furnishings and cool vintage decorations.
For the other side of this "Double" Townhouse, see VRBO listing #2014225; it is a mirror image of this unit with different furnishings.
REVIEWS
Because this home is typically rented for several months to industry professionals who have rented through agents, it currently has no reviews on VRBO. For reviews of another property we own (1 bed/1.5 bath "Short Term Rental" just two blocks away), see VRBO listing #1183620.
LOCATION
The home is within easy walking distance to almost everything, including the Convention Center, the WWII Museum, Magazine Street shopping and dining, the Garden District, St. Charles Avenue street cars, and a bit further, the French Quarter. Coliseum Square Park, the focal point of the Lower Garden District, is practically at your doorstep. The park boasts enormous live oaks, lovely walking paths, the beautiful Coliseum Fountain (great meeting place for locals and their dogs), and the recently restored Lafon Fountain.
ARCHITECTURE
This house is representative of the Craftsman style architecture of the Arts & Crafts movement. It is one of the many diverse architecture styles found throughout New Orleans’ historic neighborhoods. Common to the Lower Garden District, this house is one side of a double townhouse. (The other side is available through VRBO, listing number 2014225.) The home retains its original quarter-sawn oak mantels and tilework surrounds, tall ceilings, and hardwood flooring.
LOWER GARDEN DISTRICT HISTORY
Following the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, an increasing number of Americans moved away from the French Quarter to begin their own residential neighborhoods. The Lower Garden District was the first, formed when French architect Barthelemy Lafon was hired to subdivide a large parcel of working farmland into a new Faubourg (suburb). Lafon envisioned a Classical neighborhood with the 3 acre triangular park, known as Coliseum Square, as its focal point. The streets he created around the park were named for the nine Muse’s of Greek mythology — Clio, Euterpe, Thalia, Melpomene, Terpsichore, Erato, Polymnia, Urania, and Calliope.
