Tropical garden bungalow - all the comforts

Honey House is a finely finished piece of craftsmanship. Easy access, no stairs. It is a stand-alone 480 square foot garden bungalow.
Hardwoods accent the living area. The full bath features a tiled shower, granite counter, and access to a garden lanai. We feature whole house water filtration and UV treatment, with regular ph adjustment so you can drink from any faucet in the house. The kitchen has a gas range and all kinds of cooking equipment. There is a king size bed and a big fluffy futon couch that can be turned into a 2nd bed if needed.

We have fiberoptic wifi. Works for Zoom and phone calls, streaming, etc.

Honey House has a floor and a ceiling fan, screened windows, windows that close in case of wind or rain, curtains for privacy. On site host in separate house in case you need anything.

We offer plenty of fresh fruit from our orchards, whatever is in season. Oranges, lemons, avocados and bananas are usually available during winter months. Exotics like mangosteen and jaboticaba happen periodically. In the orchard is a shared outdoor shower, hot & cold, also filtered and drinkable.

We are located on a secluded clothing optional acre in Kehena Beach Estates, on the the Puna coastline, and most easily accessed from Hilo airport. We are only 5 minutes walk from Kehena black sand beach yet surrounded by fruit trees, fragrant flowers, and edible gardens. The song of the frogs, crickets and toads have a delightful natural rhythm that puts us to sleep every night. We have colorful house geckos, a suite of outdoor cats and muscovy ducks, and sometimes wild pigs visit. Temperatures in the winter are sometimes in the sixties at night and usually in the eighties by mid day. Winter is humpback whale season and whale song can sometimes be heard at night right from your bed.

You can walk two blocks down our quiet street to the end and then take a neighborhood trail that comes out on Kalapana Kapoho Road right across from the beach. Or take the road all the way. Hawaiian spinner dolphins often stop in for a visit to our beach. Kehena Beach faces east. It is sunny in the morning and shady in the afternoon. Quiet and often nearly deserted in the morning, a big party with drumming every Sunday afternoon.

A simple bungalow near the sea

The property is a simple bungalow near the sea. It's a large room with a bed and sofa, a galley kitchen and bathroom and shower. The kitchen has the essentials, including microwave and coffee maker. The bungalow is set in a nicely wooded lot, with lots of cats, ducks and fruit trees. In the tropics, bugs are inevitable, but they were not a problem. The beach is about a 5 minute walk: ask about the path to avoid having to walk on the busy road. The owner is very friendly and helpful. We've stayed many times, always enjoyed it and always look forward to staying again.

Authentic South Island Experience

We had a great time staying at Honey House. Fresh fruit - oranges, Avocados, limes, eggplant courtesy of our host and owner Dave. Also, the best knives. We felt like we were one with the tropical jungle. Dave is a great host with a ton of local knowledge. This is not a resort area, but there are local farmers markets and small groceries and organic fare close by. The coast is amazing for the.views. Many places to pull off and enjoy the crashing waves.and see the results of the 2018 Volcanic eruption. Very humbling. We highly recommend Dave’s place for those who don’t expect a resort. Second Visit

One of the most beautiful places in the world imho! Dave is so kind. He spent several hours answering my questions about botany and geology. He shared produce from his garden. Dave was always unobtrusively available. We felt so completely at home, yet also like we were in a wonderful dream. We went to Kona for two days and endured the craziness and chaos…. couldn’t wait to get back to Ole Ole Street! We can’t wait to visit again!!

Paradise

We enjoyed our stay immensely. It was the best Hawaiian vacation yet! Better than Maui or Kauai. Far away from the resorts, the house is on a piece of land surrounded by floura and fauna on the SE corner of the island. The sound of the birds were magical, almost hypnotic. We loved our daily visits from the kitties and ducks. It is walking distance to a black sand beach which was our favorite on the island. It is down the road from a hippyish farmers market. One review I read said it’s a place for vegan crazed hippies which is correct and great! We didn’t get to go to the live music on Wednesday nights. Pahoa was cool and we loved Kaleos. Dave was our favorite host, he is has great energy and obviously loves the life he lives on this beautiful land.

Relaxing stay near the shore

The property is a small studio bungalow. The kitchen has the necessities: stove, fridge, coffee maker, pots, pans, etc. The bathroom is clean. The main room has a comfortable king bed, sofa and dinner table. The new high speed Wifi was a pleasant surprise and makes up for the absence of a cell signal. David is super friendly and accommodating. The yard is a working food forest, complemented by ducks and cats (lots of cats). The gifts of fresh fruit and avocados were very welcome! The beach is a short walk, but everything else is a drive, so it's a good idea to stock up before heading down. This was our third or maybe fourth stay and we've always enjoyed it. We're looking forward to another visit, hopefully not too long from now!

Honey House

Honey House was a beautiful place to stay for my son and me for 8 days. It is surrounded by fruit trees, coconut palms, very friendly kitties and ducks. Occasionally, you might see a wild pig there too. It is very close to the beach, and the area is just beautiful! David is very welcoming and helpful. He and Val made sure we had everything we needed and more. We are very grateful for that beautiful getaway and are looking forward to returning one day 🌞

Become One With Nature At The Honey House…!

Jay and I had a fantastic 21-day stay at the Honey House in Kehena! This was what we needed: Eschewing the trend and bustle of the Kona side, a retreat to the slower Hilo side, and more specifically the Puna District. Dave, our Host, greeted us upon arrival with a bounty of fruits fresh-picked right from the property. And, too, weekly for our stay! He’s very low-key and we had a lot of privacy. We enjoyed the menagerie of critters! At night, the cacophony of sounds were like being in the Amazon! All this said, Honey House is very “country”, very close to nature (with feral pigs/boars), and a bit outside of things, so it might not be for everyone, especially if you’re accustomed to the Kona lifestyle. We look forward to another retreat there in the near future! Highly recommend to folks who go camping in the woods and such. Darryl

First visit to Hawaii

We stayed at Honey House for 4 nights. It was a great home base for exploring the east side of Big Island using a web driving app. It is a bit dark if you return after sunset. Overall we had a good stay. Host is friendly and responsive. The animal friends kept us entertained.

Living Local

David was a great host- helped us check in, orient, and shared some wonderful tips. This is a chill spot to use as a home base for restful, local experiences. A short stroll to black sand beach. Easy drive to Pahoa and Hilo- but away from tourists. Not fancy, but will def keep you relaxed and feeling the Hawaiian vibe

Amazing Place to Stay

My hope was to stay in a comfortable place, but in the heart of nature. This really fit the bill. Our house was clean and spacious, with screened windows on all sides. Intoxicating fragrance of plumeria flowers. Entrancing songs of birds to wake to. Hypnotic, sleep-inducing chorus of tree frogs at night. All the tools needed for cooking just about everything. Long list of spices, oils and condiments provided, so don’t do your shopping until after you arrive. Dave, our host, was a cornucopia of natural history and of an endless list of activities. Dave was so kind and respectful, usually right there working on the farm, never intrusive. Felt like an extremely safe environment. I would have enjoyed a gentler path to the ocean, rather than climbing down a rugged, though short, path. Ocean is not really conducive to swimming. About 10 min hike from the bungalow. We were low key, enjoying a tour from Hilo to Maunakea (ask for Dave at Arnott’s, a real treasure for the island). Could have spent 2 days at Volcano Park; stunning experience. The Botanical garden N of Hilo was outstanding…. Plan 3-4 hours of gentle hiking. Afternoon spent in Kona was beautiful- but crowded- reminded me of Myrtle Beach. Downtown Hilo has a lot of interesting shops. This area S of Hilo had rain just about every day, but never lasting that long. Summing up: we give Dave and the Honey House the highest possible rating. Same for the VRBO experience. And for Alamo and for the airport environment.

Seven days at Honey House

Not fancy but very clean and very comfortable. Definitely off the beaten path, and a good choice if you want to avoid the resort crowds. Walking distance to beaches and sea cliffs, but you'll need a vehicle to get anywhere else. About 9 miles to Pahoa where there is a market and other services. Saturday market at Uncle Roberts is a must. Host Dave lives next door, and was responsive to our questions and needs, and otherwise just let us be. We had zero issues with either privacy or security. Neighborhood is very quiet and although houses are close together the abundant vegetation screens all adjacent properties (even Dave's) from view. Fresh papaya during our visit! My only suggestion for this property was better outdoor seating.

Secret Garden Paradise

My wife and I spent a week here celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary/second honeymoon and it was wonderful. Our host Dave was fantastic. We flew into Kona and didn’t arrive until about 1am, Dave still came out to greet us. Being a resident for over 30 years, he was very knowledgeable about things to do in the area and across the island. He gave us fresh fruit from the garden (that you’re literally living in) almost every day. The bed was very comfortable! The frog songs at night lulled is to sleep. There’s a beach very close to property, it’s about a 15 minute walk or a 2 minute drive. We watched the sunrise there a couple of times. I highly recommend this place if you’re looking for something not so “commercial” or “touristy”. We have vowed to return here for our next stay on the Big Island. There’s so much to do! But this place is also perfect if you want to just relax and have not much to do!

Great stay in the new lava area. Completely surrounded by lush vegetation and an orchard. Dave will bring you fresh fruit and veggies. The gecko's on the ceiling are cute and there are local friendly cats and ducks. Kehena Black Sand Beach is an easy 5 minute walk. The coqui frogs will lull you to sleep in this open air screened cottage.

Can't wait to come back!

The Honey House was just as we expected it to be. We chose this location after reading reviews from several places. After hearing about the comfortable stay & welcoming/knowledgeable host from previous guests, we knew this was the right choice for us. Our trip was divided between Kona & Pahoa. We much preferred our time in Pahoa @ the Honey House. The coqui frogs were so wonderful to hear every night ( I recorded them so we could enjoy the sound here at home). The house is a block from the most beautiful beach. (This would not be an easily accessible beach for anyone who is uncomfortable with steps and/or hiking. It is not a long path down but you do have to walk down a lava rock path. It was perfect for us, and is likely why this spot has remained so pristine, so we did not mind at all.) Most of the area closes down by 9pm, which was fine for us coming from the East Coast, but others may find the town to be a bit sleepy. Again, this was just our speed and really helped us to disconnect and relax. You'll see in other reviews mention of cats. I inquired about this because I'm very allergic. Dave got right back to me to let me know that they do not go inside the house. I can confirm these are the nicest cats, but never once tried to come inside. I also had no hint of a reaction - which was great. The kitchen is well equipped & we had everything needed to prepare meals at the house. Overall we had a wonderful time and we're already tracking flights to see when we can get back. Thanks Dave!

The Kehena Honey House is a beautiful and peaceful place to recharge and reconnect. I slept so well there - listening to the night sounds and smelling the flowers and plants on the property. Dave is a wonderful host and can teach you so much about the plants on the property and the history of the area. I loved staying here and hope to return. It was the perfect place to recharge my exhausted spirits. Highly recommended.

Endless Summer

Our family of four thoroughly enjoyed the Honey House for 10 days this past July. As suggested in previous reviews, Dave, the host, was nothing but awesome. The home itself, formerly used to provide sanctuary to a thriving bee colony until it’s collapse, has been converted into a slice of heaven. Open, airy, and private we could not have been happier. The full kitchen, and a wonderful new super market in Pahoa, allowed us to brew our own local coffee, cook up some fantastic food purchases from the local farmers market, and just sit back and enjoy our time with cocktail in hand. Our children were enthralled with the ducks, kittens, roaming wild pigs, and delicious fruit. The days were filled with luke warm rain showers that would inevitably give way to a beautiful blue sky. A short drive and stunning drive down the coast, we hit the geothermal lava pools at Isaac Hale Beach Park. On the way back, ice cream from a local vendor - everyone was happy! We spent a good number of days at the local beach, Kehena Beach, where we swam, watched dolphins dive and twirl, and literally just did nothing but sip on an ice cold brew (cooler and ice pack available at the Honey Hoise) - the nudity didn’t bother us or our children (12 and 9)…we did front load the first visit with what our children could expect to see, limiting the supervises and awkward moments :) A few day trips to the Hilo side were spent shore fishing, snorkeling, swimming with sea turtles at Robinson’s Beach Park, visiting Rainbow Falls, and hiking down into the Kaumana Lava Tube - all totally worth it. While we did shoot over to the Kona side, staying at a swanky hotel for two nights, we could not wait to get back to the Honey House. Our main goal of visiting the Kona side was an epic Kayak/Snorkel tour to Kealakekua Bay. Hands down awesome! A few amazing memories and a couple shaved ices later we were back in our little sanctuary ready to hit the black sands of Kehena. The question is not “If” we’ll return to the Honey House but “When?”

Loved the Honey House!!

We loved staying here. The house is perfectly stocked and has everything needed, and we just loved the vibe of the Puna area in general. Dave was an awesome host, checking in periodically, helping us look for frogs to show our daughter and bringing us fresh fruit from his property, while also being completely non-intrusive during our stay. Wish we had stayed longer!

Por qué eligió esta propiedad

We have loved this area since we first arrived as visitors in the 80's. Have seen the various lava flows over the years, development and changes... and the beauty of this place never fails to make us feel blessed to be here.

Qué distingue a esta propiedad

We were looking for soil so we could grow fruit trees and a garden. Also wanted to be close to Kehena beach.
