Pioneer & Veterans Lodge, Kilcher Homestead, Alaska The Last Frontier
A beautiful, hand crafted log cabin, fully outfitted, next to an Alaskan historic site of rich significance & space. Can accomodate large groups (4 bedrooms and loft) or small. Each log in this cabin was carefully downed, limbed, crafted, notched, and fitted by a long time homesteader, Atz Kilcher. Sitting above stunning scenery, the cabin provides modern amenities in a rustic setting. A mix of antique furniture with modern and log style furniture in the kitchen, living room and downstairs bedrooms. Bamboo kitchen flooring is a treat and the cabin has been lovingly maintained (new downstairs shower, new laundry & high end machines, new tiling and carpeting throughout). We have provided a wood stove with a custom built rock hearth for ambience, but has upstairs and downstairs oil heat for convenience.
The large master bedroom overlooks a view you will never forget (think Kachemak Bay, glaciers, mountains, pink and purple sunsets and, admittedly more rarely, the aurora borealis), and there is a small bedroom right next door if you have a youngster you prefer to keep close, and two window nooks that even adults sleep in. The older kids or adult guests will enjoy the two bedrooms on the lowest level. Sited on a 50 acre parcel next to a homestead where eight children of an early State Senator and writer grew up in an austere 400 square foot homesteaders cabin.
Easy access to the Kilcher Family Homestead provides over 600 acres to hike in if you desire along with access to the beach via one of only two beach access sites outside of Homer on the near side of McNeil Canyon. During the summer the Kilcher Homestead Living Museum offers tours of the Homestead cabin built by Ruth and Yule as well as self guided tours/hike to the beach (donation/contribution varies). There is a meadow/pasture above the house that is fun to explore. There are also meadows, and other interesting land features surrounding the cabin. It is not unusual to see moose, black bear (shy ones), porcupines, sandhill cranes, eagles, hawks, song birds, marmots, seals and other wild life on the Kilcher Homestead. Next to the Kilcher homestead, there is also a small archive nearby for the Ruth Kilcher Mariott Archives, where I have an archive intern working part time. The intern loves in a small cabin screened from view by alder bushes. Of note this property is part of a working homestead so there may be tractors and ATV's at work, but we will coordinate with you when this occurs in the event you are enjoying the house and not out fishing or sight seeing! Note: One of our windows in the upper bedroom recently cracked

Preguntas frecuentes
Acerca del anfitrión
Anfitrión: Catkin Kilcher Burton
I and my husband are both recently retired from the USMC. We have moved home to Alaska, and are working in Anchorage. We are happy to share our beautiful log home next to the Kilcher Homestead. I was the youngest of eight children who grew up in a pioneer setting after our parents homesteaded in Alaska the 1930's and 1940's. I literally walked two miles to school, in the snow, uphill, both ways. You'll see -- but now the road is gravelled and driveable.
Por qué eligió esta propiedad
This log home was built by my brother Atz Kilcher next to our family Homestead. We purchased it from him and intend to live there when we retire. I lived a rustic life growing up. Decided I was done with that! This log home has all the luxuries I ever dreamed of.
Qué distingue a esta propiedad
This home has three full levels, with a view that is uncomparable. A special feature is a cabinet in the kitchen hand crafted from the recovered logs of the 100 square foot fox trappers cabin built in the 1800's that my parents lived in for three years when they first moved to Homer. The birth of the older children mandated my father build my mother the 400 square foot 'mansion' that we all grew up in. Watch the films (shown previously at the Smithsonian, and taken on tour in Europe), and then walk or drive the half mile to where history happened.
