Dog-friendly small-town charm near mountains and wineries with 4 bedrooms
Come to the Shenandoah Valley and stay in the most dog-welcoming vacation home in the valley (or possibly anywhere)…
Gracie’s Place is located in the heart of downtown Woodstock, Virginia, a charming historic town halfway between Winchester and Harrisonburg surrounded by mountains and the Shenandoah River. Gracie’s Place has 4 bedrooms, 2 and 1/2 baths, and comfortably sleeps 8 -9 people. You can walk to nearby restaurants or prepare your own meals in the well-equipped gourmet kitchen and dining room. There are plenty of spaces to enjoy including a living room, parlor, three porches, plus a brick patio enclosed by a six-foot privacy fence. Gracie's Place is unique, fun, and curated for people traveling with their dogs.
Woodstock was founded in 1752 and is a beautiful, walkable town. Just steps away from Gracie’s Place you’ll find a bakery, brewery, shops, restaurants, museums, ice cream store, and a Saturday Farmer’s Market.
Woodstock is a great jumping off point for visiting battlefields, caverns, and wineries, and of course, there is lots of hiking. The north fork of the Shenandoah River and Seven Bends State Park are just over two miles away where you can enjoy fishing, kayaking, and tubing. Winchester, Harrisonburg, Luray, Skyline Drive, and Shenandoah National Park are all an hour or less away. A dog park with agility equipment and generous areas for large and small dogs is also nearby.
We have no breed/size restrictions, welcome multiple pets, and NEVER charge a dog fee. Your pet is welcome in every space of the house, and we’ve provided beds, crates, bowls, toys, treats, and an enclosed back patio that includes a sandbox to dig in and a baby pool to cool off in. We only use nontoxic cleaners on our floors to protect our canine guests, and provide a list of fun places to go with your pup in our valley and beyond.

Acerca del anfitrión
Anfitrión: Cara Achterberg
Nick and I began traveling to the Shenandoah area of Virginia about fifteen years ago when I came down to run in a trail half-marathon and discovered that not only were there mountains to hike, but wineries and rivers and quiet. We began traveling down every chance we could and often had to leave our dogs behind because we couldn’t find places we could rent that allowed them (they are pit bull mixes). That was the inspiration for creating Shenandoah Dog Friendly Rentals. We strive to create the kind of places we’d like to stay with our own dogs.
Nick is an engineer who works for an international tool company, so he has done 90% of the work on our houses (including building the deck on Chateau Frankie and the kitchen in Gracie’s Place). He is amazing at solving problems creatively and can fix nearly everything.
I am an author and write extensively about rescue dogs and the crisis in our southern shelters. My books include two ‘dogoirs’ (memoirs about fostering and rescue), four novels, and one nonfiction book about living intentionally. Most of my hours are spent as co-founder and president of the non-profit, Who Will Let the Dogs Out. We work to raise awareness and resources for shelter dogs.
We currently live in Maurertown (pronounced MaurEEtown if you want to sound like a local), just ten minutes from Gracie’s Place, where we both work from home and we foster dogs and cats (let me know if you’re looking for a new pet!).
Please don’t hesitate to reach out if we can answer any questions about the area or either of our dog-friendly rentals.

Por qué eligió esta propiedad
Visiting Woodstock is like stepping back in time. The town is older than the country (founded in 1752), so it is steeped in history and charm. The locals are welcoming and things move at a slower pace. The mountains surround the town and the north fork of the Shenandoah River slithers by on the eastern edge (in seven bends). We enjoy hiking every weekend, visiting wineries, and 'thrifting' (yes it is a verb here as there are about 30 thrifty shops/emporiums within fifteen miles of us, a handful in walking distance). We also enjoy the local festivals and festivities, battlefields, and historical sites in the Shenandoah Valley and nearby Winchester and Harrisonburg. Gracie's Place is right in the heart of 'downtown' Woodstock, so you can walk to everything -- farmers market, restaurants, brewery, ice cream shop, bakery, museums, shops, post office, playground, pool, and so much more.
Qué distingue a esta propiedad
Gracie's Place is so much more than dog-friendly. We like to think we are dog-welcoming. We're happy you plan to stay here, but even happier you brought your dog. There are dog-centric touches throughout -- crates, beds, toys, treats, and more. The back patio is surrounded by a six-foot privacy fence and has a sandbox and baby pool just for your dogs. The house is also very child-friendly and guests are delighted to know there's an amazing ice cream store practically in our backyard. We also have a Little Free Library right out front (handbuilt to match the house) and guests are invited to curate it - adding your own or books from the Free Library inside Gracie's Place for guests. One more thing - the beds are so comfy that many guests contact us afterward asking for the details on how to get one just like it for themselves!
