Charming Savannah Stay I Steps to Forsyth Park I Outdoor Deck
Summary:
Edgy, artsy! This describes the newly renovated historic Josephine's Carriage House Apt C (circa 1890), located in Savannah's Victorian District. Here an open-space concept meets rustic original brick and a sleek take on crown molding. Light pine flooring cozies up with textured area rugs. Think vivid color and neutrals, varied textures, vintage pieces, sleek ultra-modern and rugged industrial lines. While eclectic, comfort is the bottom line. An outdoor deck/patio expands the space.
The Space:
The NYC designer’s sophisticated eye has brought together Steampunk hardware with black-and-white Cuban tile flooring and modern seating in neutrals unexpected prints. Picture sliding “barn doors” and leather cabinet handles opposite stainless steel. And imagine light. Natural light streams through the many windows, reflecting in ornate mirrors. Prefer it dark? Pull down the blackout shades.
Think comfortable. The hand-selected furniture meets a specific aesthetic, but your comfort is key. Curl up on streamlined sofa and wrap a soft blanket around your shoulders, or head out to the private deck, just outside the bedroom, and relax in the Savannah climate.
In a way, the mix of styles and eras is “very Savannah.” Many grand homes are filled with furnishings and art that’s from “all over the place” geographically, chronologically, and taste-wise -- but it works. And that’s one reason Josephine’s Carriage House is a fantastic place to relax between Savannah excursions. It works.
At the back of the apartment, the bedroom has a comfortable queen-size bed and a vintage bedside table with fifties-style lamps. High-thread count cotton sheets, a variety of bed pillows and tasteful bedding textures pull the room together. The black ceiling fan gives you that extra whisper of coolness. And there are spaces for suitcases and folding and hanging clothes. A workstation with dedicated lighting meets your writing, reading or computer needs. You may end up scribbling poetry! Who knows?
Just off the living area, the kitchen is equipped with everything you need for breakfast, light meals and snacks (no frying or baking). A stainless steel high table and stools double as a dining table and a bar, for cocktails, tea, or a game of cards. All you need to bring is food and drink.
The bathroom shower, with its exquisite Cuban tile flooring, is equipped with plush designer towels. A laundry bay with washer/dryer ensures you have clean duds for the evening’s restaurant reservation and maybe a night out on the town.

The Neighborhood:
You need not go far to see Savannah’s sights and explore its charm and mystery. The 22-acre Forsyth Park, famous for its fountain, arboretum, café and public events, is 4 blocks east. Just head down Park Avenue to the south end of the park to experience the Sentient Bean coffee house, Brighter Day health food store, as well as Betty Bombers restaurant and the American Legion Bar. One of the city’s finest restaurants – Local 11Ten – is right there, as is the gorgeous Mansion on Forsyth Hotel, with its piano lounges 700 Drayton Restaurant, and art gallery.
Also within walking distance from Josephine’s Carriage House is Rumrunner’s Bakery (2 blocks up Montgomery), which serves a wonderful breakfast and lunch to eat in or take out. And the popular Sandfly Barbecue (3.5 blocks), located across from the impressive SCAD Fashion Building, is a local favorite. Visit this authentic ‘50s diner for delicious ribs, chicken and pulled pork, and all the Southern sides – collards, sweet potato fries, cole slaw. Eat there or take home.
At the north end of Forsyth, the Savannah Design District is a superb place to shop for distinctive home furnishings, stationery, James Hogan couture clothing, funky Custard clothing, jewelry and all manner of fanciful items.
Of course, downtown Savannah, River Street, Starland Art District are close, but not everybody will want to walk: Pedicabs, rental bikes, Uber, the CAT bus system, and/or your own vehicle will probably get some use. A trip to Tybee Island Beach is about a 20-25 minute car ride. Stop at Fort Pulaski National Park on the way there or back for history & hiking.
