Acerca del anfitrión
Anfitrión: Wendy Drummer
A suburban Knoxville lady, I grew up fully immersed in nature at my family’s boat dock business on Douglas Lake. We had a campground and a boat launch and 16 places to rent. I spent 35 years involved in my mother’s business by selling Live Bait, pumping gas into boats, mowing the campground, and running the campground store. At one point, we had a small restaurant on the water, but we eventually closed it down due to strict TVA regulations. Even after my graphic design career took off in “the big city of Knoxville,” I continued to spend many years wandering the banks of Douglas Lake and working evenings and weekends at the boat dock, whether that entailed cleaning the campground bathhouse, collecting boat launch fees or selling minnows and nightcrawlers. Early in my graphic design career, throughout the 1990s, I worked for 8 years at the Alumni office at the University of Tennessee. My office was on the 3rd floor of the historic Tyson Alumni House. It was such a great decade to work on campus. The family boat dock business closed in 2002, and I finished my MBA in 2003 then focused fully on my Knoxville career in the business world doing communications for corporations, such as DeRoyal and Highway Transport Logistics. Communications evolved through the years, and my career went from being print media to web design to digital marketing. Design & marketing strategy ultimately evolved into being all-digital. In 2023, the $130-million logistics company downsized, and my career as a Digital Marketing & Communications Manager came to a close. So, I decided to fully retire, and now I am enjoying the opportunity to combine my past & present skill set, which is short-term vacation rental. My time is now divided between camping in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and home in Knoxville. My husband (of 34 years) works on turbines in hydroelectric dams, so his career takes us to sometimes living in our camper near a dam during the work week.
Por qué eligió esta propiedad
In 2020, our Uncle Foy’s home—this home at 200 Drummer Lane— became available. So, we were so grateful to finally acquire a piece of property on Drummer Lane. Drummer is my husband’s family name. This home where you are currently staying? It was built in 1952 by my husband’s Uncle, Foy Drummer. We refer to the home as, “The Foy Manor” in honor of Uncle Foy. Uncle Foy really enjoyed playing the harmonica. He worked many years at Reeder Chevrolet car dealership in the parts department. He was a car parts man. We reside next door in the 1915 farmhouse, which is where the Drummer family began.
We have added a few 1950s mid-century modern touches to reflect the era of when our Uncle Foy and his wife Iva built and moved in. We have discovered receipts from where the home was constructed and where Foy & Iva purchased their furnishings. The home appears to be one of the home kits of Sears & Roebuck. The original kitchen cabinets were installed by Sears & Roebuck.
My husband and I have lived in this neighborhood since 1998. Our home is across the grassy field in the farmhouse next door. Back in ’98, we had the opportunity to purchase the Drummer family’s ancestral family farmhouse. We would drive by sometimes, and Don would say “My grandfather built that farmhouse in 1915,” but we never dreamed we’d have the opportunity to actually purchase it. Through the decades, the old farmhouse had passed out of the hands of the Drummer family, and one day a distant cousin put it on the open market, and we were able to make our farmhouse dream happen. Anyway, no one “willed” or passed down the farmhouse to us. We had to purchase it on the open market. So, from 1998 until 2010, we enjoyed living next door to our Uncle Foy Drummer. We were grateful to be able to purchase and spruce up The Foy Manor. My husband and I are next door and mostly retired. We are enjoying the short-term-rental scene and learning a lot. It is such a joy to share The Foy Manor with everyone.
Qué distingue a esta propiedad
Folks enjoy the peaceful countryside setting. The house really does provoke a sense of solace and respite. But then it is so convenient to hop onto interstate 40 and get anywhere in Knoxville very quickly. The Foy Manor is a casual place to relax and spend time with pets and disconnect from the city for awhile. Then, when it is time to plug back in to restaurants or shows or clubs or shopping, every “big city” amenity is a few short minutes away.
