Cloud Forest Sunset Cabin
The Sunset Cabin is located on 40 acres of private property adjacent to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. A mixture of primary cloud forest and cleared areas with much “edge effect” offers perfect viewing of wildlife. Because our property is contiguous to more than 110,000 acres of protected forest, you’re likely to see many more animals here than in most other places in the Monteverde zone. White-faced monkeys, coatis, and agoutis are all commonly seen on our land, and several cloud forest specialists, including resplendent quetzals and black guans are also often seen near the cabin. Brocket deer, ocelots, and margays which are very uncommon, are occasionally seen here.
The property has several trails through both primary and secondary forest that are available to guests. These private trails are seldom used and offer the quiet tranquility needed to enjoy the ambient cloud forests.
Owner, Bill Calvert, first visited Monteverde in 1976 and built the cabin in the mid-1980s. An extensive addition was added later. From the front porch, one can see the upper Gulf of Nicoya and every so often sunlight reflecting off of the more distant Pacific Ocean. There are three houses on the 40 acres, none of which is in view of the others giving one a very private experience. The cabin is located at the end a 600 foot drive way and is nearly surrounded by primary forest.
The downstairs includes a living area and kitchen with a wood burning stove. Amenities include a six burner cook stove with oven, a microwave, and the usual coffee maker, toaster, blender, crockpot, etc. The upstairs loft and new addition have four beds - two doubles and two singles and can accommodate six people comfortably. A large bathroom has an on-demand electric hot water heater. The front porch extends along the entire front of the cabin, wraps around to the north side and provides spectacular views into the canopy. Agoutis and coatimundis are often seen on the front lawn, which is somewhat steep and not suitable for croquet. WiFi is available, but is slow. Two sets of stairs to the second floor are steep and may not be suitable for young children or older adults.
.
We are well removed from the bustle of Monteverde, Cerro Plano and Santa Elena. You will have a quiet peaceful experience and will be able to go to sleep to the sounds of katydids, cicadas, frogs and wake up to chorusing black-bellied wood quail, duetting gray-breasted wood wrens and the chatter of the Prong-billed Barbet.
Access to shopping amenities is provided by a public bus which passes by at the bottom of the driveway several times each day. Taxis are available at any time. Several good restaurants, a small grocery store and a few gift/coffee shops are located within 2 miles and many more are available in nearby Santa Elena.
The entrance to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is just a ten minute walk from our house. Several other Monteverde wildlife reserves are also nearby.
If you’d like a home-cooked Costa Rican meal, we can arrange to have a talented local cook prepare meals before you arrive (or during your stay). She can also deliver groceries upon request.
If you're interested in hiring a private naturalist guide or taking a tour, please be in touch with us and we can make arrangements.
