High-quality bolthole and cosy sanctuary for 2 people in a picturesque village location with WiFi.
Ivy Cottage is a charming, stone-built self-catering holiday cottage in the heart of a small, picturesque village called Langthwaite in Arkengarthdale, just 3 miles from Reeth and within the spectacular Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Ivy Cottage has been transformed through recent renovations into a high-quality bolthole and cosy sanctuary for two people. The sympathetic renovation has retained much of the original character and features such as exposed beams and a stone wall. Yet it still offers contemporary appliances and furnishings for modern day living and a true home from home experience.
This extremely welcoming holiday cottage offers everything you need for a relaxing stay and is surprisingly spacious for a one-bedroom property. Every nook and cranny bursts with a creative mix of old and new. You enter the good sized living room with dining area. The focal point is no doubt the multi-fuel stove situated in a stunning inglenook fireplace in the centre of the room. Not only does it look fabulous, the stove throws out the heat when lit, creating a warm and cosy ambiance to unwind on the comfy sofa.
Off the living room, down a couple of steps, is the quaint and traditional cottage kitchen with an Aga. Packed full of quality cooking equipment, there’s also plenty of storage space for your own supplies and the additional bonus of a full-size fridge and freezer.
Upstairs is the real treat. A spacious bedroom with a sumptuous king bed, beautiful soft furnishings and views to the village and the fells beyond. Off the bedroom is the high quality, modernised ensuite bathroom with bath and shower over.
This stunning holiday home is heated throughout by modern electric radiators, includes free, unlimited Wi-Fi and a 43” smart TV. There is a small, enclosed patio area to the front of the cottage to enjoy a glass of wine of a summer evening or a coffee first thing…no better place to hear the song of the birds and the babble of the not-so-distant stream known as Arkle Beck.
Off the patio there is a secure, covered bike store, which is spacious with plenty of room for two bikes. There is a hose nearby to keep your bikes squeaky clean, heating in the bike store to dry your bikes off and electric sockets for electric bike charging. The bike store also doubles up as a drying room for outdoor walking gear.
Although the cottage caters for modern needs, be prepared to be thrown back in time, in this oldy worldly village. ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ fans will no doubt recognise the village and surrounding areas as lots of the original series was filmed in the area…and it really hasn’t changed a bit!
If you enjoy a tipple or two in a real Yorkshire pub, you are in luck. One of the smallest and most unique pubs in the area is a short hop, skip and a jump from Ivy Cottage. The landlady is a fountain of knowledge on the area and serves some fantastic real Yorkshire Ale. The award-winning CB Inn is around a 10 to 15-minute walk from the accommodation, which offers gastro style meals, real Yorkshire ales and an extensive wine and gin menu.
The location is fantastic, with great walking, running and cycling straight from the doorstep. The area is full of the remains of the lead mining industry, walks to suit all abilities from high level hikes up Fremington Edge or Calver Hill to low level strolls along the Arkle Beck. There really is so much to do and enjoy.
The market towns of Richmond, Leyburn and Hawes, and attractions, including the famous Aysgarth Falls, Wensleydale Creamery,The Bowes Museum and Bolton Castle are all within a short, glorious drive away.
Parking is available in the village on a first come first serve basis but we would ask you to respect the needs of local people and park in the local car park three minutes walk away once you have unloaded. The cottage comes with a parking permit so you do not incur any additional expense.
To ensure your stay is as comfortable as possible, included in the rental fee is – luxury bed linen and towels and electricity. Initial fuel for the fire is included and there is an honesty box to pay for further supplies.
The cottage comes with a welcome basket of Yorkshire treats and basics so you don’t need to think about bringing all those with you.

Getting there
Please use the postcode on your SatNav to reach Langthwaite.
Nearer the village, follow signs to the Red Lion, go over the bridge into the village and park where you can, but please be respectful of other users. Ivy Cottage is behind and to the left of the cottage in front of the pub. There is only footway access – either behind or in front of the other cottages.
Coming North on the A1 - Junction 51 , follow signs to Leyburn (A684) Go through Crakehall, Patrick Brompton, Constable Burton and through a set of traffic lights into Harmby and then Leyburn.
In Leyburn come up to the junction in front of the Bolton Arms and turn right at the mini-roundabout, following signs to Reeth and Grinton. Then first left in front of the Kings Head pub (police station on right hand side), signposted Reeth and Grinton.
Follow the road out of Leyburn, past Bikers (left hand side) along a mainly straight but undulating road. At the cross roads go straight on, signposted Grinton and Reeth. Go past the army shooting ranges, over a cattle grid, and you should get a lovely view over Swaledale and Arkengarthdale. Carry on down into Grinton, passing the youth hostel (right-hand side)and over another cattle grid on the way down to the T junction(The Bridge pub opposite), turn left towards Reeth.
Go past the Dale Bike Centre (yellow bike!), through Fremington, and over the narrow bridge into Reeth. The road twists and goes up across the green, as you reach the top the Buck Inn is in front of you (white pub), public loos on the right-hand side. The sign says Langthwaite 3, Barnard Castle 13.
Turn right alongside it. Drive up this road for three miles including over two cattle grids. After the second you come down into Langthwaite - there is a sign for the CB Inn and then later for the Red Lion. As you pass the telephone box on the right-hand side take the next right over the small bridge into the village square. (If you get to the Methodist chapel on the left hand side or the CB Inn on the right, you have gone too far!)
From the North (and East) - via the A66. At Scotch Corner, turn onto the A66 towards Penrith. After several miles, come off the A66 (dual carriageway at this point) to the left sign posted to Reeth and continue several miles over undulating and variable countryside right over the top of the moor until you come down, over a small bridge and up to a T junction. Turn left towards Reeth, going past the CB Inn and the church, then as you come down into the village, take the left signposted to the Red Lion and over a small bridge into the square. Park once you are in the village.
From the West - via the A66. Close to the signposts for Barnard Castle to the left, you will see a sign to Reeth to turn right. Take great care crossing the other carriageway. Continue several miles over undulating and variable countryside right over the top of the moor until you come down, over a small bridge and up to a T junction. Turn left towards Reeth, going past the CB Inn and the church, then as you come down into the village, take the left signposted to the Red Lion and over a small bridge into the square. Park once you are in the village.
Sat Nav may take you via the A66 and The Stang but it is a long way round.
Accessibility
The property is not wheelchair accessible. There is a flight of stairs to access the first floor and two steps into the kitchen. The bathroom has a bath with a shower over, so you do need to step over the bath side to use the shower.

Idyllic
This cottage is in a wonderful location and is super cozy and comfortable. Its well equipped, a real home from home. We had lovely walks through stunning countryside directly from the cottage, there is also loads of places of interest just a short drive away.
Our hosts were extremely helpful and even went to the trouble of getting a few vegan treats for us on our arrival, which was really appreciated.
This was one of the best cottages we have ever stayed in.

Perfect short break
We absolutely loved staying in Ivy Cottage. It was clean, tidy and well equipped.
The village is beautiful so many walks in the area too. We enjoyed our walk to Reeth along the river and through the Dales. We also had a short walk up towards Booze and back down along the river.
The Red Lion was a cosy pub to grab a drink. Rowena the landlady was very knowledgeable and proud of the area.
Definitely want to revisit this fabulous cottage. Thank you

Knus en gezellig ingerichte cottage.
Wij hebben een prettig verblijf gehad.
De cottage was schoon. Alles was aanwezig. De cottage was in het dorpje wat lastig te vinden ondanks de beschrijving die meegestuurd was.
Leuke / authentieke pub in het dorpje.
Yorkshire Dales is prachtig.

Great house in a marvellous location
Since it was a very late booking, we managed to gain access and everything was very smart. The house very clean, easy to work appliances. Very nicely decorated. Plus a great location
