Near to St Davids on the edge of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and tucked away in the tiny hamlet of Skyfog, Smithy Cottage is a modern dog-friendly cottage on the site of an ancient farm dwelling dating from 1798. Decorated and comfortably furnished throughout with many intriguing photographs and original paintings by the talented owner, the cottage is set within a small enclosure containing the old Smithy, the tools are left as the blacksmith finished on his last working day in the 1940âs. The neighbouring clog makerâs workshop was recently removed intact to be preserved in the National Folk Museum of Wales at St Fagans. South facing and catching the morning sunshine, the grounds are full of wildlife and run down to the passing stream and across a small bridge to the meadows beyond. A footpath leads you on to the nearby 50-acre Skyfog Common (National Trust), designated an SSSI and free for you to roam. The orchard is planted with apple, plum, pear and quince trees and guests are invited to enjoy the fruit as it ripens.
Solvaâs pretty harbour village, encircled by the coastal path lulls the visitor with the chinking of boat masts and lures them with clothes and antique shops, restaurants and pubs and the nearby Solva Woollen Mill. At St Davids the beautiful medieval cathedral and Bishopâs Palace are an essential visit, the buildings are historic and remarkable, and programmes of music and plays are staged throughout the year.
