The Navigli district of Milan is one of the most charming and lively areas of the city, famous for its historic canals, bohemian atmosphere and vibrant nightlife. Located southwest of the city center, the district is characterized by ancient canals, the Naviglio Grande and the Naviglio Pavese, which date back to the 12th century and were used to transport goods and people. Today, the Navigli are the beating heart of Milanese culture, attracting artists, students, and tourists from all over the world.

Adjacent to the Navigli, Porta Genova is an area rich in history and innovation. Here you will find the Porta Genova train station and the M2 metro stop, which makes it easy to travel to other parts of the city. The district is known for its art galleries, trendy boutiques and a wide range of restaurants and bars.

North of the Navigli, the Ticinese district is known for its young and dynamic atmosphere. Corso di Porta Ticinese is a popular shopping street, with vintage and independent clothing stores. The area is also home to the Basilica of San Lorenzo and the Parco delle Basiliche, a green oasis ideal for walking and relaxing.

The Darsena is the ancient river port of Milan, recently redeveloped to become a focal point for leisure. Here you can take walks along the pier, rent rowing boats or enjoy an aperitif in one of the many bars that line the water. During the summer, the Darsena comes alive with events, markets and shows.

Points of Tourist Interest

The Naviglio Grande is the main canal of the Navigli and is lined with a myriad of bars, restaurants and shops. Every last Sunday of the month, the Mercatone dell’Antiquariato transforms the area into a large open-air market, where you can find antiques, crafts and local products.

Less crowded than the Naviglio Grande, the Naviglio Pavese offers a quieter atmosphere. It is perfect for long walks or cycling, with numerous cafes and traditional trattorias along the way.

A picturesque corner of the Naviglio Grande, Vicolo dei Lavandai is a testimony to the Milan of the past. There was an ancient washhouse here where women washed their clothes in the canal. Today, it is a picturesque place to take pictures and take a break.

Located nearby, the MUDEC is a museum dedicated to world cultures. It hosts temporary and permanent exhibitions that explore the art, history and traditions of different civilizations. The building itself, designed by architect David Chipperfield, is an example of contemporary architecture.

Basilica of Sant’Eustorgio, this ancient basilica is located a short distance from the Navigli and is famous for housing the remains of the Three Wise Men. The complex also includes the Portinari Chapel, a Renaissance masterpiece.

The Navigli district is a cultural and social hub, with a wide range of events and activities. During the evening, the Navigli come alive with the famous tradition of the Milanese aperitif, where bars and restaurants offer drinks accompanied by food buffets. In addition, many venues offer live music, theater shows, and themed evenings.

Conclusions

The Navigli district represents the perfect combination of history and modernity, tradition and innovation. With its picturesque canals, the wide range of venues and restaurants, and the wealth of cultural events, it is one of the liveliest and most fascinating areas of Milan. Living or visiting the Navigli means immersing yourself in the pulsating heart of the city, discovering new corners and unique experiences every day.
