Grand 1930s Mansion in Chania Old Town with Garden
A 1930s neoclassical mansion on Chalidon Street - 420m² across two floors, sleeping 10, with a private garden bounded by the ancient Venetian fortifications. Three minutes on foot to the Harbor. One of Chania's most remarkable historic residences with soaring ceilings, original plasterwork, mosaic floors, sweeping marble staircase, and an expansive private garden and views. Ideal for families, multi-generational trips, groups of friends who want the whole mansion in the heart of the Old Town.
Every room in this house carries the weight of nearly a century of Chania's history, and the comfort of a recent, careful restoration.
Built in the 1930s on Chalidon - the main pedestrian thoroughfare of the Venetian Old Town - this house was a social and political landmark of pre-war Chania. After the German bombing of the city during the occupation, the family was forced to abandon it, and in the postwar years it sheltered displaced families. The same family has held it ever since, and between 2020 and 2023 they restored it carefully: preserving the soul of the building while adding every modern comfort.
From the moment you step through the ornate entrance into the grand foyer - geometric mosaic floor underfoot, marble staircase rising in front of you - you understand this is not merely accommodation. It is an experience in living history.
Five bedrooms sleeping up to 10 guests. All mattresses are high-quality, and locally sourced.

• Living, Dining & Kitchen The grand living room is the heart of the house. Soaring ceilings with original decorative plasterwork and ceiling roses, tall windows flooding the space with natural light, contemporary sofas, antique sideboards, and curated artwork that honors the home's heritage. The large dining table seats the whole party beneath a vintage chandelier and doubles as a spacious workspace if anyone in your group needs to log in remotely.
The kitchen has been fully renovated: modern wooden cabinetry, quality appliances, and a breakfast table for casual mornings. Oven, dishwasher, full-size refrigerator with freezer, espresso machine, filter coffee maker, kettle, toaster, and a complete set of cookware. A door opens directly to the garden, perfect for coffee among the citrus trees.
• The Garden & Outdoor Spaces The garden is one of the rarest features of this property. An expansive private outdoor space in the heart of the Old Town is uncommon. What this garden is bounded by is unique: part of its wall is formed by the ancient Venetian fortifications of Chania, a protected archaeological feature.
Mature citrus and olive trees, flowering bougainvillea, and stone pathways. A covered pergola with a marble dining table for shaded outdoor meals. An upper-floor terrace offers panoramic views over Old Town rooftops to the sea.
• Bathrooms Four full shower bathrooms plus a separate WC. Each bathroom blends historic charm with modern functionality: marble surfaces, vintage-style brass fixtures, rainfall showerheads, and electric heated towel rails. Fresh toiletries, quality towels, and hairdryers provided in every bathroom.
• Climate, Connectivity & Comfort Year-round comfort. Central cooling and heating throughout the house, with independent AC units in the garden-side bedrooms for individual control. Storage heaters and electric heated towel rails in every bathroom keep the house warm and dry from November through March, ideal for off-season stays and longer winter retreats. Hot water is provided by solar heaters with electric backup, so it's always available.
WiFi throughout the property, with multiple comfortable workspaces if any of you are mixing work and travel: the grand dining table, the master bedroom desk, and a foldable desk in the study.

The family has held this house for generations. After three years of careful restoration, they've decided for the first time to open it to guests. 2026 marks the first season this home has ever been rented, and the family is welcoming this year's guests at an introductory rate. If you arrive in 2026, you are quite literally among the first people outside the family and friends to stay here in nearly a century.
• Τhings to note Chalidon and the surrounding streets are lively in summer. Garden-side bedrooms may pick up background music from nearby bars on summer evenings, particularly in the evenings and late into the night, especially on weekends and during peak summer. With windows closed, noise is significantly reduced, and the front-facing rooms are notably quieter.
Please note that Smoking is not permitted inside the property, but guests are welcome to smoke in the garden.
