Duluth Press Building History: 1915 W. Superior St. aka The Duluth Press Building was built by architects Radcliffe & Willoughby in the year 1894. Extant Missouri native Hugh Wetmore spent much of the 1880s working as a reporter for the St. Paul dispatch before moving to Superior in 1890 to write for the Superior Evening Telegram. The next year he established a newspaper in Duluth's west end called The Union Workman: The People Press. According to Duluth journalist Paul Lundgren the paper was the official organ of The Duluth Trades and Labor Assembly. The following year Wetmore began courting Helen Cody, sister of "Buffalo Bill" Cody. Hugh and Helen wed in July 1893, the same month Helen took over as the paper's business manager. That September the paper's name was changed to The Duluth Press. By then Buffalo Bill Cody owned half of the business and financed the construction of a building to house it along the upper 1900 block of west superior street. After the building opened in 1894 Helen hired her daughter Mary Jester as its city editor and organized the Zenith Press Club, consisting solely of women. The next year she advertised the publication as "The Women's Paper of the Great Northwest." The periodical didn't last long, they published their final issue on August 29, 1896. Since then the building has housed other publishing companies, apartments, and various other businesses.
The Lincoln Park Craft District is a treasure trove for every shopper. You've got Frost River creating timeless canvas packs, from handbags to canoe bags. Duluth Pottery showcases some of the area's finest ceramics and art. Free Air Life Co. and DLH are the go-to spots for the fashionable adventurer's clothing needs, and there's so much more to discover! After you fall in love with the cookware in your Duluth Press kitchen, you can shop for all of these items at Goat Hill Market Place. Goat Hill is also a fantastic spot to find local and handmade items from vintage goods to craft supplies, it's a shopper's paradise.
Lincoln Park is an ideal spot for a family day out! With a protected bike lane, exploring the neighborhood on foot or bike is a breeze (when it's not snowing, of course). You can enjoy a leisurely ride along Superior Street, suitable for all ages and abilities. 2 weeks over the holidays- great stay
Family trip with all of us and our dogs. Really nice clean apartment. Super convenient to tons of local amenities in a growing area, easy to get to the highway, and super quick to the top of the hill or downtown. If we do this again, this will be our first choice. Thanks again.

First time in Duluth
We were in Duluth for five days and loved every minute of it. The Duluth Press building is beautifully updated. From the moment we walked in until we left, we told each other we could live there. It was a space we came back to relax after our daily outings. The host was exceptional.

Great place to stay, close proximity to a number of shops and restaurants. Just didn’t realize we’d be on the 3rd floor lotsa stairs and have very bad back made getting in and out difficult especially as we are smokers.

Pretty and clean, great location, but uncomfortable beds
Great property, very clean, nicely renovated. Well stocked kitchen and bathroom. Nice shower! The beds were very uncomfortable. My friend slept in the main bedroom and said the bed was very hard and uncomfortable. I slept on the pull-out couch and it was like my grandma's pull-out from the 90s with two bars in my back all night!! It was really bad. I also thought there should have been a duvet cover on the extra comforter for the pull-out - it seems gross that everyone was using the same comforter without a washable duvet on it.
There were also some safety things that should be updated - the parking that says your room number is not a good idea - people can know where you are staying exactly based on where you park. Also, the code to open our unit door was just the unit number plus a 1 - that seems like a very obvious code and if every unit has that same type of code, that's very unsafe and scary. We had safety concerns because of these two items.
This property has a lot of promise, but needs some tweaks.

Erica - Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on Duluth Press! We truly value input like yours as it helps us to continuously improve.
Regarding the door access code, we completely understand your concern, and we appreciate you bringing it to our attention. We’ve already updated it to ensure it remains secure and cannot be easily guessed in the future.
As for the reserved parking spot, we recognize that the high-traffic nature of this part of town can sometimes be challenging. Without a reserved spot, it’s very likely guests would face difficulties finding parking and might even have to pay for one. While this is something we aren’t able to change at this time, we hope the convenience of having a guaranteed spot added value to your stay.
We hope to have the opportunity to host you again in the future for an even better experience! -Michelle
