About Headford
Headford, some 28 km north of Galway, is the popular angling centre for the eastern shore of Lough Corrib, and Greenfields, some 6.5 km west of the town, is its boating harbour. The town is situated next to the Black River (noted also for its trout angling) which is the county boundary with Mayo.

Headford is also the centre of an area rich in archaeological monuments, ranging from prehistoric burial cairns, Iron Age stone enclosures, early Norman and later castles, to a bewildering array of monastic sites.

Today, the modern cattle mart, although replacing the fairs and markets once held in the town's two squares, ensures the local popularity of this North Galway town.

Headford is twinned with the picturesque town of Le Faouët in Brittany, France.

Places of Interest

Ross Errilly Friary
Standing in serene solitude on the South bank of the Black River, just two miles West from the town of Headford in Co. Galway the Franciscan Friary of Ross is recognised by many historians both past and present as the best preserved monastic ruin of its period in Ireland. It was founded in 1349 by the then Archbishop of Tuam Dr. Malachy MacHugh, who was a native of the Headford area and, as it happens, a member of the Franciscan order.

Killursa
Killursa is about 1.5 miles west of Headford on the Greenfields road. It is a ruined church set in an extensive graveyard. The ruin measures 70 feet by 24 feet, and it has a gothic pointed doorway, and a large mullioned gothic window, which indicates that the present structure was erected after the Norman invasion, 1169. A wall was built across this church, probably cutting off a section for the officiating clergyman, who had his habitat there. Killursa means the church of St. Fursa whose statue one sees as one enters the graveyard. It was here St. Fursa had the famous visions of the unseen world which grave authors assert inspired Dante to write his “Comedia Divina”.

Lovely property, nicely secluded. Comfortable, cosy cottage with modern conveniences (WiFi, television, microwave). Caretaker Eileen was very helpful (including enquiring among the locals if they knew any family history to help my genealogy research. An adorable book has been compiled by the owner’s family outline the history of the cottage.

Quiet country cottage

Clean and comfortable, very much off the beaten path - private and quiet. We enjoyed our stay here.

Delighted you enjoyed your stay. However, when you say "off the beaten path", it depends on what you expect from your holiday! Cong is just 9 miles from the cottage. Here you will find Ashford Castle, The Royal Abbey, Statue of John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara, both stars from 'The Quite Man", which was filmed in a pub in Cong and this pub is still functional. There are walking tours here, Nature and Wildlife tours, Historical and Heritage tours. Plus Boat tours and horseback riding. Galway City is 20 miles away with it's large shopping area, popular Salthill beach and amusement area. Croagh Patrick, nicknamed the Reek, 42 miles away. This is a 764 metres mountain and an important site of pilgrimage in County Mayo. Aillwee Caves in Co. Clare is 43 miles away. Cliffs of Moor, Co Clare is 55miles away. Connemara National Park, Mweelin, Letterfrack, Co. Galway, is 50 miles away. I have but listed a few, the list is inexhaustible. Evelyn, the caretaker is always available with more suggestions.

Week in Galway

Lovely week in a peaceful traditional cottage. Slept well - only darkness, stars and birdsong outside - ate well - Headford has a friendly inn, Anglers' Rest - travelled miles in beautiful countryside - visited interesting places such as spectacular Kylemore Abbey. Recommend the cottage to anyone who wants a contrast to a busy working life.

A peaceful retreat

The hosts were friendly and helpful from the start, as well as very approachable. They have made a very welcoming, well appointed home away from home, where at the beginning and end of the day, you can comfortably relax and unwind in comfort, with all the facilities you could need. The location is quiet and peaceful in beautiful surroundings, but convenient for travel around Galway. There was a personalised sense of hospitality to our stay, and we would highly recommend the cottage for a delightful stay.

First, the lake view is nowhere to be seen from the cottage. Further, the wi-fi never worked, and the UK to US electricity converter was fried. Aside from that, the cottage was clean and comfortable, in a bird-filled, idyllic environment.

Nothing worked

The wifi, TV didn't work; the tub had a huge crack in it. It was not a cute cozy cottage.

VrboOwner a répondu le 9 févr. 2025
Unfair. “Nothing worked”basically meant the internet, which was caused by a storm on the day of her arrival, we were unaware. That was the only real complaint. This guest did not communicate with either the caretaker or the owner whilst in the property. Had she done so, the caretaker would have assisted her in every way. She stayed the night of arrival and departed next morning. There is NO huge crack in the tub, there is minor cosmetic damage on the external casing, caused by another recent guest. This will be tended to as soon as possible. She then demanded a full refund for the remainder of her stay, which was granted as a gesture of goodwill. Beware!
